Jay Wilson Interview

August 8, 2013

Jay Wilson BMX
Photo: Jamie Mauri

In a BMX world that has been trending into a lot of jibby grinds and freecoaster riding, there’s still a handful of riders that are out there absolutely sending their selves doing their own thing. One of those dudes, who I’ve always been really stoked on, is Bone Deth‘s Australian connect, Jay Wilson. Over the past few years Jay has had a few video parts and web edits that dropped that were loaded with some really gnarly riding. It has been a little while since I’ve seen something from Jay, so I figured it would be a good time to try and track this guy down and find out what he’s all about and what’s new. This is what he had to say! Enjoy!

Ryan Lloyd Interview

April 2, 2008

Sometimes when I am surfing the different forums I check out I come accross people I am really stoked on. In this case I saw a video of Ryan that his friend had posted on Bikeguide and I just had this urge to get an interview with the kid. So his buddy Ginger (I forgot his real name =/ ) got me in a contact with him and this is what came from it. The kid rips! All the photos in this interview are from James Wade.

Name:
Ryan Lloyd

Location:
Blyth, South Australia, Australia

Your riding is real impressive, how long have you been riding?
Thanks. I’ve always ridden bikes since I was a little kid but I only really started getting into it about 5 or 6 years ago. I’m 18 now so when I was around 12.

Did you race at all when you were younger?
Nah never. I’ve only really ever been interested in jumping stuff and going fast.

From a recent video it would appear your a blaster, are you all bout the big tricks or do you have some tech stuff?
I wouldn’t really say they’re big tricks. Haha. Yeah I love to get tech aswell. Depends on the mood I guess.

What are some of your favorite tricks?
At the moment I am having heaps of fun doing tuck no hander airs and tables. It changes all the time.

What is one trick you cannot do for the life of you?
fufanu’s cause I don’t run brakes!

Your from Australia, is there something about Australian’s that make you guys so good?
Vegemite maybe?

Who or what are some of the biggest influences on your riding?
Just watching guys like Aitken, Brian Foster, the Forte bros, Corey Bohan, Gary Young and Chase Hawk in videos. I love to watch anyone that goes fast and high.

Are you into the contest scene or are you more of a chiller?
We’ll in SA there really isn’t a contest scene at all. So just chillin with my mates and hitting up Adelaide every now and then is real fun.

Do you have any plans for trips with your friends, contests or anything like that for 08′?
I’ve got nothing planned at the moment. A mate of mine is moving to Melbourne so I hope to go visit him at some stage.

You just had a really good edit of you come out, are you filming for anything in particular or just kind of doing your own thing?
Nah nothing in particular. Its funny cause at around 2am last Saturday in Adelaide me and my mate Tim decided to get some clips on his dads camera and I just made a small edit out of it and yeah. I guess it turned out ok. haha

If you could only do one trick for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Probably turndowns cause they took me sooo long to learn. And you can do them on anything.

If you could only ride one place for the rest of your life, where would it be and why?
Some real good trails or a real flowy park. I love the feeling of just flowing around.

Have you had the chance to travel to ride much at all?
Not yet. I haven’t even been outside SA to ride. The furthest I’ve travelled to ride is probably 3 hours away!

Where are some places you would really like to go someday?
I’d love to go and see the trails scene over in the UK. Anywhere in Europe or the US aswell. And I’d like to see more of Aus as well. haha.

What are some companies your really digging?
I really like United and Odyssey’s stuff. I’m getting the new United 40 frame real soon so that will be sweet! and all odysseys parts are just dope!

What do you feel about the scene in Australia?
Well the scene in SA at the moment is real strong. There are jams on all the time and lots of real good riders. It’s really good.

Who are some of your favorite people to ride with?
All the Clare kids, you know who you are! And all the Adelaide dudes as well. It’s always real fun when I get to ride with those guys.

Where are some of your favorite spots to ride?
My trails are always a favourite but lately its just been too dry to ride them. I ride Clare skatepark all the time. Adelaide city skatepark is real good and there are lots of other good parks nearby.

What do you think you would be doing if you never picked up a bike?
I’d probably still be playing Aussie rules football and cricket!

What does BMX mean to you?
Freedom to be creative and cruise around exploring new places.

Outside of riding what are some things your into?
Going to the beach, hanging out with mates, spear fishing, body boarding, jetty jumping, anything fun!

Are you in school at all?
I finished yr 12 last year. Now I’m just working with my dad as a builder.
You edited your video of yourself, what are you using to film and edit?

Those clips were filmed on a canon ixus photo camera. And I just used Microsoft movie maker to edit it. Pretty basic. haha

If you could spend the day with anybody alive or dead, who would it be and why?
My Grandpa Schroeder (my mums dad) and Grandma Lloyd (my dads mum) cause I never got to meet them.

What are some of your favorite riding movies and regular movies?
All the props dvds, Chill bro, Fitlife, any decent web edits. Regular movies would be the Castle and Lords of Dogtown.

What kind of music are you into, any bands you suggest people to check out?
Not really into any particular stuff. Rock, instrumental, pretty much anything with a good beat.

What are some of your favourite websites?
ugzine, vitalbmx, rideuk, bmxonline, defgrip, unitedbikeco, focalpointbmx

If you won the lottery, what would you do with it?
Go on a world trip with the family, give some to charity, buy some land and build trails, open up a bike shop.

How do you feel about Myspace?
I have one. I don’t have a mobile phone so it’s the only real way I can chat to the Adelaide riders.

If you could do anything as a career other than riding bikes, what would it be and why?
Anything in the bmx industry. I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do.

What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next few years?
Just to stay healthy and continue to have fun riding my bike. I would love to travel around as well.

Is there anybody you would like to give a shout out or thanks to?
Firstly God for keeping me safe and giving me the ability to ride, all my family and parents for their support, all my friends, all the Clare kids and Adelaide dudes who I ride with, James for taking the photos, ginger for posting the vid on bikeguide which resulted in this interview, cheers mate. And Kurt at bmxunion for hooking up the interview. Thanks heaps guys!

Anything I forgot you would like to add?
Have fun!!

About: Super BMX DVD

January 15, 2008

As some of you already saw the post before Alex’s awesome news WOO ALEX!, I posted up a trailer for the Super BMX DVD.. I got a little more information about it and maybe it will be your next DVD buy. I should be getting a copy of it and I will do a review to post up after I get that.

Name of DVD?
SuperBmx presents… ‘Live For Today’ a BMX Road Trip Video

How did the name come about?
Oh Man! Settling on the name was really difficult. Originally it was to be called “SuperVision” in the late 90’s but that never happened. A bunch of other names floated around in my head for awhile too, “Whammo” was one and then it was pretty much was gonna be called “Fuel to Burn…Roads to Drive” after a lyric in a Neil Young song and since its somewhat of a road trip video. But then I realized it should be shorter and simpler and it became a toss up between that and “Live For Today” a song by an old hippy band called ‘The Grassroots’. I used a cover version of that song by ‘Lords of the New Church’ for the ‘Keyko Trails’ (our crew’s trails). Basically the very last part I edited was the title scene and I just went with ‘Live For Today’ at the last minute. It’s funny because in the video promo, in the bonus section it still has the Fuel to Burn title.

How long has this video been in the works?
I started the SuperBmx video project around ’97 or 98′. Base Brooklyn’s ‘The Shady Bunch’ had dropped about a year or so before and Glenn Milligan was gonna help me edit this project. I only had a low end Sony Hi-8 camera and everything was progressing so fast then by the time I got enough footy together the older stuff was too dated, and then all videos that were being released were pretty much filmed strictly with 3 chip cameras. So it was put on hold till I could get a real camera.

Who filmed and edited it?
I filmed and edited it, it was my first video editing project so it was a huge learning experience, I pretty much learned as I went along so I think the parts I edited last came out a little better than the others. It gets to the point where you can look at something and keep tweaking it over and over forever but at some point you gotta chill and realize that if you keep doing that it’ll never be done so you just gotta leave it alone and live with it, thats a hard part too, but overall I’m 100% satisfied with it. Other people who filmed were James Reres, Paul Cvikevich, Brian Kaminsky, Steve-O Ciron, Chris Zeppieri, Grady Corbitt, Brian Russell, Paul Eibeler, Craig “ManBoy” Passero, Tom Passero, Alex Samide, Jake Ehrinberg, Dan McAllister, and Joe Trimarchi.

What kind of cameras and editing equipment was used?
A Sony TRV-950 is my only camera, story behind that is funny, my ex-girlfriend worked for an Advertising agency, it was their camera but she could bring it home if she wanted to so I got to use it on the weekends. Long story short, she got laid off from the company while I had the camera and it never made it back to them, then I got laid off from the relationship and it never made it back to her. She asked for it back once but I think she knew I needed it more than her and she just let it go as a parting gift which was cool. For editing I used a pirated copy of Final Cut Pro 5, on a Apple G4 eMac, really. I only use the best!

Is there full parts? Who all has some?
All the parts are of places, I think it kept the Road Trip vibe going through out. It was also an easier way to feature the 67 or so different riders that have clips in the video without breaking them into their own sections.
Parts are:
1. Intro
2. Austin Texas part one
3. On the Road (mixed places section) part one
4. Long Island
5. Crash Section
6. Hooligan Trails (R.I.P.)
7. Austin Texas part two
8. On the Road part two
9. Keyko Trails
10. Ender mixed section of antics and some riding over Karaoke
11. Slide Show of over 500 photos
12. Credits

It says there’s some “pros” in this video, who would those guys be?
Guys that definately would be considered pros would be guys like Chase Hawk, Brian Foster, Jimmy Levan, Chris Hallman, Derrick Girard, Brian Yeagle, Joe Simon and a ton of other guys I’d considered pro

There’s a whole bunch of unknown guys, who are some of those guys?
A few of the guys coming up that are killing it and are really cool are Pauly ‘the Pirate’ Cvikevich, Craig ‘Manboy’ Passaro, and Bobby Delaat. Also Chris Zeppieri and Marvin Morales are coming up doing their thing in the streets.
There’s a ton of other people in too, they’re all listed on the website. And there’s a lot older guys in it too, who party way too much but still manage to ride somehow too, like “The Hooligan BoozeHounds”. We’re all about 30 years old now and the older you get the harder it gets to ride off those hangovers after a good Friday night!

Did you pick who would be in the video or is it more a crew of guys who put there stuff together?
Pretty much everyone in the video are people I’m friends with and happened to be around when I was filming, nothing was planned out too much. And then there’s also the crew that rides the Keyko Trails, all the Hooligans, and all the Long Island kids.

What kind of stuff can people expect to see in it?
Pretty much an even mix of Trails and Street filmed throughout the country. A ton of antics and comedy mixed in too, with a bit of partying and boozing too, Hell there’s even Inter-Racial Bum Intimacy in there as well.

It says there’s like 2 tailwhips and two barspins in the whole thing, how did you manage this and why?
The people I ride with and filmed don’t really do them I guess. I put that fact out there just so people would know ahead of time what they were getting. If you’re looking to see a ton of barspins and tailwhips you probably won’t have a hard time finding a video full of them these day. I’m not hating on that type of video at all, the Animal videos are amazing and I love to watch that type of video, they’re some of my favorites. I just wanted to go do something different. I like a variety of different things, I just wanted to balance things out a bit and focus more on guys who aren’t the best at doing the latest tech stuff but are pretty damn good at what they do and who are the best at having a good time on and off their bikes.

Is there any special features or anything with it?
Bonus sections include:
The Video Promo
The SuperVision Promo from ’98 edited by Glenn Milligan
My (Superfly) part in my friend tom Bivona’s video “DV3”
My 3 parts from Base Brooklyn’s videos “The Shady Bunch”, “Off The Hook”, & “Neighborhood Superheroes”
