Its weird how BMX is. I remember being really stoked on the videos CB was posting on Bike Guide years back. We didn’t really ever talk very much on there or anything, but now its different. CB has really done a good job of keeping the video ass kicking game going with the AOTC videos him and Chris Z have been putting together. I had been talking to him a bunch lately about all the AOTC stuff and figured it would be a good idea to do an interview with him. It probably should have been done a while ago, but it’s done now. So check out what he has to say, the photos, and videos. Don’t forget to leave him some love in the comments too!
Name: CB Coombs
Location: Boston, MA
Sponsors: None?
Years riding: Started out by jumping over bags of trash when I was around 10, didn’t get into park and street till I was around 14…so about 8 -9 years.
What was it that got you into riding anyways?
I lived on a dead end road that was a giant hill when I was younger. I would always get my bike and walk it up to the top and ride down as fast as I can. I thought it was so fun. Then I started to put pieces of wood on cinderblocks and jump over stuff. I would put stuff in the middle like pieces of wood with nails in it flipped over so they were sticking up. I thought I was badass. Every kid on the street did it for awhile but im the only one who stuck with it.
That seems to be the way it goes with everyone dipping out for sure… So what got you into filming and editing? How long have you been doing that?
My mom bought me a $200 camera when I was like 15. I had fun just filming friends and stuff. Once I graduated high school I bought a new camera with all of my graduation money. I just really enjoy filming something then months later having a video to look back on of a great session or a road trip
So that was what lead you to the AOTC videos? What got you and Chris going with that group of guys. What does AOTC mean anyways?
AOTC stand for “Attack of the chowder” which I litterally cant even explain haha. I’m from Cape cod and chowder is pretty popular there. Chris made it up. I met Chris at Woodward like 6 years ago. We always kept in touch. Now we both live in Boston and wanted to do a video so we just started to film. I’ve met everyone involved with the video while I’ve lived here the past year. Now AOTC is our group of friends.
Attack of the Chowder… Wow. So you dudes have been pretty good friends for a long time. So besides Chris who is your usual riding crew? Do you have any expectations of Craig Passero going pro?
During the school year I ride with Craig and Chris everyday. In the summer you can litterally ride to Timeless BMX and meet like 4 or 5 people there at any given time. Then we will all go ride together, even Jody will leave the shop and pedal around. Everyone in Boston is pretty close. As for Craig, he should have gone pro a long time ago. Its funny cause he’s my roommate next year and he said his main goal it to catch me jerkin off.
Haha. So what made you go to Boston for school anyways? Are you going to film or what? Did you and Chris kind of plan on going together or did you just realize you were both going there one day.
I tried to apply to SMFA out of high school and didn’t get accepted, so I went to a community college and got an associates in visual design. Once school was done I still wanted to go to SMFA so I applied with a different style to the same place and got in. Chris got into the same school during my last year of community college…its just the best school haha. Now I go for graphic design/mixed media.
Chris was in a few of my classes and would always catch him sleeping… Slacker
So what do you want to do with school once you are done anyways?
Well I was the grapic designer for Staff bmx Mailorder for a while. I did all there stickers, shirts and ads for ride for awhile and had a really fun time. thanks to Bob for that opportunity. I’d like to do something with logos or advertising somewhere inside the BMX community, go on trips to film for companies. BMX to me is just really fun. I would love a job doing something that I consider fun. It wouldnt really feel like work if I enjoyed doing it ya know.
I definitely feel you on that. With school, work, and everything, how much time do you find to ride?
I set up my schedule so I’m a full time student but only have to go to school tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. That way if the opportunity to travel is always there. Those 3 days are usually hell, like 9am -10pm days, but I try to ride the rest of the time.
Have you been doing much traveling lately? Do you have any trips planned yet?
As of right now, nothing. After we finished AOTC traveling has been pretty slow. Only time will tell where I go next. I would like to go to California or out of the country.
When will you guys be starting on AOTC2?
Once school starts up again I plan on starting to film, I haven’t really talked to chris about it that much thought. I really enjoy filming and when we actually decided AOTC was going to really happen it only took a solid 5 months. I want to do another one and make it better.
Awesome, so lets get away from BMX a bit here.. What are you doing right now?
At work watching “sunshine”. Before I was being paid to watch old kung-fu movies.
Sounds like a rough life. What do you do?
I’m a computer monitor at my school, I print photos and answer questions. Chris and I have the same job during the school year….were the same person.
Haha. So since you are in college I can imagine you have been getting pretty wild with the ladies. You got any funny sex stories?
Nothing out of the ordinary I guess. I have actually been in the same relationship for almost 4 years and we haven’t killed each other yet. haha. |’m actual happy. she is really supportive. comes to all the contests, watches edits, checks the come up.
She checks The Come Up huh… What are some of your favorite sites?
The usual. Facebook, Twitter, The Come Up, Defgrip, bmxfeed, Timeless, Berrics, Hulu, The Last People and the Dirty 6. So much more. Gmail always.
What’s the first song to come to mind?
Mass Appeal by Gangstar, its my default ringtone and somebody just called me.
What would it take to get you to go a round with a UFC fighter that happens to be a midget?
I’m a huge pussy, the fact that hes a midget has nothing to do with it. He’s been trained to hurt me haha. It would be one of those situations where I would get the shit kicked out of me and it wouldn’t be cool… but later it would be funny.
What makes for a good night of partying for you?
I consider myself and pretty boring person. I grew up with people who weren’t really “party animals” so even now I’ll just chill and watch some movies or something. When party time come it usually involes staying up all night with lots of booze, we usually end up at some random ass house party only to be kicked out cause of something Adam Spitalny did. Good friends, good times.
Do you own, or have the desire to own any automatic weapons?
I do not own any weapons besides the standard issue swiss army knife.
I forgot I do own weapons. My girlfriend bought me a 3 piece fully functional samurai sword set. Shes the best.
What’s the best advice you could give somebody?
Dress every day like your gonna get murdered in those clothes, live every week like its shark week, and forget money even exists…travel, buy cool stuff, do what you want to do because you want to do it, you can always make more money, right.
Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
My parents, Kristin, Chris Zeppieri, Craig Passero, Zack Cooke, Brett Silva, Jody and Christine @ TimelessBMX, Adam22 @ TCU, You(Kurt) for this interview, everyone who has had something to do with the making of AOTC, everyone I ride with daily, everyone at TJD. Anyone else, thank you so much.
