David “Bink” Seavey has always been some what of a local legend in my book. I grew up about 30 miles from him, and got to know him the last 6 or so years (maybe longer?) pretty well. In that time, he was always going on road trips, filming, and getting into all sorts of weird situations. He recently hit me up to see what was new and mentioned that he was now riding for Tree. About time somebody hooked him up. We decided it would be rad to do a bike check with his new set up to go along with his brand new edit that you can find at the bottom. Take a look…
Name: Bink Seavey
Location: Tempe, Arizona.
Sponsors: Tree Bikes, Etiket Clothing, Serenity Ride Shop, and Team Dilly (is the man).
Years riding: Between ten and twelve years.
Frame: Tree Lil‘ Buddy 20.5”.
Bars: Tree Sequoia with the Tree thread-in bar ends.
Grips: ODI Longneck.
Forks: Odyssey Race forks with Tree headset cap.
Stem: S&M Race XLT.
Headset: Fly.
Cranks: Profile.
Pedals: Odyssey JCPC.
Sprocket: Tree 25t heat-treated steel.
Chain: KMC 510.
Seat / Seat Post / Clamp: Premium/Kink/Built-in.
Rear Wheel: A Federal shell with an aluminum KHE axle, which was tapped to 7/16”. It has a 9 tooth driver and it’s laced to a Sun Envy rim.
Rear Tire: Fit FAF 2.3”.
Front Wheel: Tree straight pull hub laced to a Sun Envy rim using Tree “Twigs ‘n‘ Berries”.
Front Tire: Premium folding tire, 2.25” (I’m not sure how tires are measured but it doesn’t seem accurate. Though the Premium tire reads 20×2.25”, it’s much larger than my 2.3” FAF, and it barely fits in my fork).
Pegs: Three Tree Stunt Stumps, but I ride peg-less the majority of the time.
Guards: Two aluminum Tree guards in front and a Tree cog guard in the back.
Mods: I cut the bars down an inch on each side, re-threaded the rear axle and made 7/16”-14mm adaptors, trimmed the seat post and removed the pedal pins from one side of each pedal.
So you recently started getting hooked up by Tree. How did that come about? Do you have anything in the works with them?
Sam, who I’ve known for around six years, was in town for a few days before and after a snowboarding trip to Colorado. We met up and rode a few skateparks, some trails and some other local street spots. Throughout his time in the Valley, I was either working on my bike or bitching about how my bike was working. Apparently Sam was sick of it, and he called me up a few days after returning to Missouri to ask if I wanted to ride Tree stuff. I said, “hell yeah,” and my dream of one day riding a pink aluminum 2-Hip Pork withered away. But at least I got a Lil’ Buddy out of it… For now, I’m just riding and filming as much as I can.
Do you have any other fresh new sponsors you care to let us know about?
Scott at Etiket Clothing has been sending me some shirts (tie dye!) for a few months. I was ready to start editing an introductory video back in October, but my camera shit the bed and ate an entire tape’s worth of footage. I’ve re-filmed nearly all of the clips and I have a new Etiket/Tree joint video that you can find at the bottom.
I’m also riding for Serenity Ride Shop, which my friend Tyler recently opened in Chandler near the bike park.
How are things going in Tempe? Are you still doing the school thing or are you finally done?
Things aren’t too bad in Tempe. I’ve been riding quite a bit and enjoying the perfect weather because I know the unbearable heat is just around the corner. Luckily, I should be avoiding most of it this summer.
I finished school last May after the most over-priced four years of my life. I can’t really complain, though. I had a great time in my program.
You have been a traveling like a champ since as long as I can remember. What do you have planned for the summer? Aren’t you planning some overseas stuff?
First and foremost, I’m going leave this police state before it boils my brain into metal illness. What do DMX, Charles Barkley, and Mike Tyson have in common aside from being bat shit crazy? They live in Arizona. Correlation doesn’t always mean causation, but I mean…Arizona is a wonderful place.
I’ll be spending the summer in the milder Minneapolis and then my girlfriend and I will be trying to move to the Netherlands.
How’s the film work coming? Have you began working for anyone or are you doing the BMX bum thing for a little while longer
I’ve only been doing some freelance stuff lately, and that’s been slowing down on account of my camera not working and me not having money to fix it. I guess that means things aren’t going so well… But at least I have plenty of time to ride and take on projects of my own, including writing, which is what I’d prefer to do anyway.
I know you have been filming. Have you been filming for anything in particular or just web edits like the one that dropped with this?
I’ve mostly been behind the camera lately, but I finished that Tree/Etiket short web video the other day. Other than that, I don’t really have anything else lined up, except maybe the next Team Dilly video. But that probably won’t be out for another seven years…
You have a blog don’t you? What’s the link and what can people expect from that?
I sure do. It’s mentaldrip.tumblr.com. You can expect to see the occasional boob, learn how to wipe your ass with one sheet of toilet paper, read a haiku about digestion, enrich your life with Mitch Hedberg quotes, watch a Japanese man pretend to be a Japanese girl while playing the bass guitar, and learn about some things that I hate.
Anything I missed you want to say?
Fuck chapped lips.
