We have always been a big fan of Dan Foley and his pretty minimalistic style that applies to his riding and his setups! This past week, we were treated to his signature Cadence frame promo from Wethepeople and we were loving the look of his setup! Are you pretty particular with how you have your bike setup or are you pretty flexible?
I’m pretty particular with some things, but flexible with others. I always end up adjusting my bars numerous times whenever I put new ones on till they feel just right and I always run my seat at the same height, too. I’m open to try new things though when it comes to bike geometry. I just recently tried out a steeper offset fork and love it.
Does your setup change at all, more pegs, freecoaster, brakes, etc… or do you keep it about the same?
I pretty much always keep it the same; brakeless, two pegs, and a cassette. It’s simple and functional for how I like to ride. I could see myself putting brakes on and/or taking pegs off for trails though.
If I remember right, you aren’t into freecoasters. What has kept you from joining the club?
I just really love the way a cassette feels. I guess a lot of dudes feel like a freecoaster opens up a lot of possibilities, but I still feel like there are endless possibilities with a cassette. Every time I get on someone’s bike with a coaster, it just feels blown out with all the slack. I know its something you get used to, but right now I don’t see the point in taking the time to get used to it and re-learn a lot of things when I’m still content with a cassette hub.
What’s the oldest part on your bike? Does it have any sort of sentimental value or is it just indestructable?
My hub guard and it doesn’t have any sentimental value.
Your signature Cadence frame from Wethepeople is out now. Care to take us through a few of the details you really are psyched on for it?
WTP listened to every little detail I told them I wanted in a frame and I couldn’t be more psyched with how it came out. A lot of street-oriented frames coming out these days tend to have super short back ends and steep head tubes, which works well for nibbly tech stuff, but feels a bit unstable on ramps or trails. I love doing nibbly street stuff, yet also love cruising skateparks and trails so I wanted something that felt good for all of that. It’s got a 75 degree head tube that’s neither too steep or mellow and a 13.6” (centered) back end that’s neither too long or short. The bottom bracket is pretty low at 11.5”, which gives it a stable and consistent feel on everything. It also has a high 9” stand over height to give it a more classic look. I told WTP I wanted the frame to look as simple and clean as possible, so they came up with the minimalistic seatstay/chainstay bridges and the curved-off ends of the seatstay/chainstay tubing. I love it.
How are things going with Wethepeople? Do you have any trips, more signature products or projects in the works with them you can tell us about?
It’s been awesome. They’re always down to listen to my input and I couldn’t be more psyched on their brand direction and all their new products. I’ve heard of plans for trips coming up, but nothing specific yet.
How about things with G-Sport? Any signature goods in the works with the mad scientist, George French?
GSport has been rad. I love riding for a company that puts so much into the design and functionality of their products. Currently there’s nothing in the works though.
Any other sponsor news you can tell us about?
As of now, no.
Your Cadence frame promo dropped the other day and it was DAMN good. Have you be been working on any other video projects that we can expect to see in the near future?
Thank you! I’m doing a quick 4 Clip Friday for WTP next week and I’m also working with Rob Darden on an edit. That’s it for now.
Since 2015 is just getting started, have you made any big plans for the year that you hope to make happen like trips?
My girlfriend and I are moving out of Greenville and to Raleigh at the end of this month. I’ve been in Greenville 6 years now so it’s time for a change. Other than that, there’s nothing definite. Really hoping to make it to Simple Session in the spring and some other contests after that.
What have you been getting into when you aren’t out riding? Any new hobbies or projects you are working on?
Aside from video work, I really enjoy playing drums. I’ve been playing since I was 13, but when I initially moved to North Carolina for school, I had to leave my drums at my mom’s house. A couple years back I had a roommate move out and it freed up enough room to bring them down here. I’ve been trying to play them regularly since then. I also enjoy messing around with making music on my computer, but it’s not much more than a hobby at this point.
How can people keep up with you these days?
My instagram is @danfoley and twitter is @danfoley_. I don’t post much to twitter these days, so instagram is probably your best bet haha.
Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Thanks to my family, friends, my girlfriend Jessi, Wethepeople, GSport, Vans, and to any other person or company that has helped me out in any way. Also, thank you, Kurt, for this interview.
