Daniel Penafiel Bike Check

After a few months of being on Mutant Bikes, word slipped out that Daniel “Naran” Penafiel had a signature frame and bars in the works. If you haven’t noticed, the guys at Mutant are always doing some unique things with their products, so this definitely caught my attention. Daniel has been testing prototypes of the frame, bars and a few other items so we figured it would be a perfect time to take a closer look at his setup and find out what we can expect from the Tizona line that’s due out early next year. Check it!

So you are currently testing your signature frame, the Tizona. How’s things going so far? What are some of the features you wanted on the frame?
I am very happy with my frame, the measurements are as perfect as I dreamed. It’s simple, thin tubes, strong and different details and than other frames on the market.

Do you plan on changing anything between this sample and the final version?
I need a little more time to test the prototypes and have a look with Nuno to see if it still needs some changes. So far it is doing really well.

How long until the frame will be available?
The frame and bar will be out for 2013. You’ll have the chance to check it out at Interbike and Eurobike before then.

Can you give us some hints of what the specs are?
I can say that Tizona line will be have 3 different TT sizes 20.55”, 20.81” and 21” with 3 different colors; gloss blue (as my bike in the pictures), gloss caramel yellow and flat black. The rear end will have a 13.80” chainstay length, the top and down tube have a strong integrated gusset as well with integrated dropouts… and some nice details like the Tizona logo CNC machined in the headtube of the frame.

Are there any other parts on your bike that are being tested?
The Tizona handle bar (my other signature part) and the new Mutant Bikes top load Stem.

How are things going with Mutant now that you have been on the team for a while? Do you have any new edits we can expect to see soon for them?
I’m very happy. Nuno is pretty cool with me, which is something I needed. I have been working with my friend Ismael Ibañez for my new edit that we dropped yesterday. (Check out the edit below)

How are things with the rest of your sponsors?
All is good. The Arnette people are very good, Andy from Vans is more than a sponsor, he is an amazing friend and the other sponsors are really good too.

Do you have any trips coming up this summer?
Yes, this summer will be really busy, but amazing as always. I’ll travel a lot to many places like the Worlds in Germany, Mutant Bikes Tour in Portugal, Summer Session in Finland, Marisquiño in Spain, Rebel Jam in Spain, etc.

What else have you been up to lately?
Cycling, working on my house and my car. I’m learning to appreciate what I have and being with the people I love!

Did I miss anything that you want to say?
Thanks a lot for the opportunity and Viva el BMX!
