I don’t know if it’s obvious or not, but I’m a super big Darryl Tocco fan. Everything about his riding gets me so stoked from the beyond perfect barspins to the smoothest hurricanes in the business — It’s all so good. We recently caught wind that he would have a new signature colorway coming out for the Kink Titan frame and figured he would be building up a new bike soon. So we hit him up and sure enough he just built up a fresh ride not too long ago that was looking too damn good not to do a bike check. Let’s take a closer look at this bike, find out what else is new with the guy and then watch his brand new Kink edit!

What’s the newest part on your bike? Just built up this new frame yesterday!
What’s the oldest? Gyro
Do you need to have your bike to be setup a certain way or are you pretty flexible? Top tube length, bars in a certain spot, seat height or anything that you’re pretty specific about?
Nah, I’m pretty lax about it. I usually run a 20.5″ or 20.75″. I jump around with that.
I know you have been killing it with the gyro for years and pretty much always want to throw one back on my bike when I see you ride. What has kept you on the brakes when so many people have gone with the crowd?
Just not my style, really. I like brakes. I like fufanus. I like hurricanes.
Am I crazy or does it seem like brakes are making a come back?
Yeah, you’re crazy, haha!
Do you change your setup much at all or are you pretty consistent with how you like your bike?
Keep it pretty consistent, frame size jumps or falls a quarter inch sometimes like I mentioned above.
Have you thought about or tried a freecoaster at all or is that just something you aren’t into?
Yeah, same thing with the brakeless stuff, just not into it. I like seeing what dudes are doing with it, but at other times, it’s like “Yo, you know you didn’t actually just pull that right?”. Like if you wouldn’t have pulled it with the cassette than it’s time to clock back in. It’s pushing things but at the same time the rollout game has taken a step back in a lot of this footage I watch. Still sick though, guys like Shane Weston make it really fun to watch, but more than half of these dudes aren’t even using the coaster for its intended purpose! It seems like they just put it on for the sake of having one. I like feeling that back pedal when I roll out of things. It’s gratifying, haha.
For this year you have a new colorway on the Titan frame that you have gone with a matte black color for your frame after doing some brighter colors in the past, like that mint color on your old Tocco frame. What lead to your decision to go with that color?
I was told in the years past that flat black wasn’t an option, so I always liked playing around with the ones we saw on the Tocco frames. Once the opportunity came to do a really flat finish, I was stoked. My bikes were usually sprayed flat black as a kid, it just looks sick. I know it’s too obvious for a colorway, but that’s what I wanted.
I know Kink had a ton of new stuff drop this year. What are some of the stuff you’re most excited about other than the frame?
Kink is always up to something. Our product dudes aren’t a joke and they aren’t catalog shoppers. I’m really just psyched on the direction of things at the brand in general, it’s a really creative time right now.
Outside of that, what’s new with Kink? Didn’t you guys just get done running around the East Coast for the Turn Down The Suck tour?
Yeah, we just finished that Turn Down the Suck tour and it was dope. 15 heads in the van, ranging in age from 15 to 32. Nothing quite like it. It really makes me feel like you’re part of something big, you check yourself quick in that van. When’s the last time you saw a team roll out of a van that deep period, let alone with huge smiles on their faces? But yeah, we’re always doing something. I’m about to spend a month bouncing in Europe with Sean and Jay. It’s the best.
Do you guys have any more trips, videos or other cool projects coming up that you can tell us about?
Yeah! Jay, Sean, and me are flying to Copenhagen on Wednesday to cruise for 6 days, then off to Berlin to ride and kick it with Bruno Hoffmann and Dan Lacey. That’s gonna be a good one. After that Jay and I are gonna check out Vienna and Athens, just on our own dime. It’s sick to do your own thing while you’re already out there. Europe is endless it seems like. I’m going to see Deafheaven and Chelsea Wolfe in Vienna and I’m gonna lose my mind.
How are things going with Eclat these days? I’d imagine they have a trip or two lined up for you?
Ideas are getting kicked around for trips, we did that Texas trip earlier this year which was fun. My first trip with Stevie which was cool, it’s rad to watch him do his thing. You just shake your head really, the kid is bad.
What’s going on with Bad Timing? Will we be seeing some fresh stuff from that project any time soon?
Ahhh, we’re so slack with it. We get so busy and our art guy is busy. I’m not asking anyone else to do art for us. My homie Ryan made anything that we’ve ever done that looked good, and it feels like if he can’t do it and we can’t pay him, then we’re just gonna chill. It’s still fun though and it’ll never completely die.
I know you’re always working on a project on the filming and editing side of things. What do you have cooking there? Anything we can expect to see soon?
Working on pieces with Doyle and Chad, they have a bunch of insane shit. Tony has a part coming, Lloyd has footage coming, we always got something cooking.
What’s your camera setup looking like these days? Have you made any new additions to the kit at all?
Nah, been rocking the same kit for a bit. 7D/Navi Handle, HMC-150. Canon Super 8. It suits me right now.
What have you been getting into when you have some down time? I’d assume Austin always has something to keep you entertained?
Yeah, there’s something going on always. Sometimes I’m just chilling in the crib but bands are playing every night, new friends are in and out of town every few days, people are riding. It’s the best place I’ve ever been.
What’s the last song you heard and movie you watched?
Sleep Talk by Caravels and The Woman who Wasn’t There
How can people keep up with you these days?
hahaha, oh man. @darryltocco. That felt lame, but fugg it.
