I had the chance to meet David when I was in Chicago for the Dew Tour. Some how we ended up hanging out a ton. We also ended up seeing some pretty crazy stuff go down on the streets of Chicago at 2 in the morning. David is a real down to earth dude who is pretty funny, and really doesn’t seem to stress much. If I were to own an NBA basketball team (You better believe I make that much money), I’d pay him to dunk on everyone since he’s so damn tall. I shot him some questions, and here is what he said. Check it out and then leave him some love in the comments!
Name: David Bruce Grant
Location: Muncie, IN
Sponsors: Albe’s BMX Mailorder
Years riding: 5
What was it that first got you into BMX in the first place? Any early memories?
My buddy Nick called me up one day after I got kicked off the middle school basketball team and asked if I wanted to go ride around town. As far as early memories go it’s always fun to think about how terribly your first few handrails went haha.
Being the tallest dude in the world, how do you feel about riding for Albes?
Haha being part of Albe’s is definitely a dream come true, there is so much talent on the team its an honor just to be a part of it.
What the hell is DRKN all about?
Having fun, talking shit to people and filming haha.
You have been killing it for quite some time now, but you are still pretty unknown. Have you been trying to keep low key or is it just Indiana’s fault?
Um, I’m not really trying to keep it low key, there’s just so many amazing riders out right now its hard to get known. Being from Indiana doesn’t really help either haha.
I’ve noticed you have been filming a ton lately. Have you been working on anything in particular or just a few web edits?
I just finished up a split web video with Cody Bowers and Dane Wild from a few trips we took this summer. A few larger projects are in the works right now but nothing is written in stone yet so I’ll keep my lips sealed on that one
Speaking of filming, when did you get into all that? How did your broke ass afford the camera you have?
My friend Jerry always used to film when we would ride around campus when we were younger and watching him got me into it in the early stages. Filming is just motivation for me, it keeps riding fresh. I saved for awhile to get my bag going, right now I have a Canon GL1 & Canon 20D, nothing spectacular but it gets the job done.
Have you been on any trips lately? Where are you off to next?
I was up in Michigan hanging out with Flip, Dane and all the Albe’s guys a few weeks ago. Hopefully heading back to Santa Barbara then to Texas this winter.
I’ve seen you do some pretty beefy stuff in some of your videos. What’s usually going through your head when you are about to do a gnarly drop or something?
Haha most the time it’s “I hope it goes well” but I try not to think about it too much because I start to over think and question myself.
What kind of an injury list do you have?
Collar bone twice, right wrist 3 times and a surgery on it, broken thumb, couple concussions, cut both my knees down to the bone, countless rolled ankles. I’m always rolling my ankles.
Who is your usual riding crew these days? Is there much of a scene in Indiana?
My friends Junebug, Coleman & Dean everyday and my good friend Alan when he can. Only a handful of guys want to ride street around here. There is a big scene in Indianapolis which is about an hour from me. If I don’t move up to Michigan with Dane Wild thats where I’ll living next year.
Random thought, do you know what ever happened to that website MichianaBMX?
haha no clue.
If you couldn’t live in Indiana, where do you think you would move to?
Ohio cause alllll the girls put out. or Arizona, I love the heat.
Do you feel like being a tall ass dude makes riding easier or harder?
I think it has its advantages, it seems to help me hop higher cause I can pull my legs up a lot.
What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding?
Sleeping, being a skeez with the ladies, watching Aqua Teen or working.
You got some pretty gnarly gauges in your ears. What size are you at and what makes you want to do something like that?
I was at 1 & 3/8″ then my ear ripped, I’m at an inch now. I just like the way it looks and its a fun process to mod your body like that
Do you have any tattoos or anything?
Not yet, I’ve been talking to my buddy Joel who is a tattoo artist in Marion, he’s drawing me up a piece now.
Have you ever actually got a chick by telling them that you would “Suck a dudes dick”?
hahaha no not yet, but I’m never gonna stop trying.
How much love do you have for homeless people?
Tons of love when they let me film them, not so much love when they try to put their fingers in my plugs
How bummed were you when you met me? I’d be pretty bummed if I met me…
haha Not bummed at all, we got to get ditched by hot girls because of Big Daddy and we saw a tweaked out chi town local about get stomped by a bouncer.
Where are a few of the worst places you have hooked up with a girl in? I can expect a dumpster out of you for some reason…
hahaha Not a dumpster just yet, on my parents gravel drive way, at the Louisville outdoor park, in my friends driveway while the girl was on the phone with her boyfriend, in a hotel room while 5 people watched.
Are you any good at basketball? I heard you dunked on Shaq just once?
I used to be pretty good, but I never dunked on Shaq, I did block a shot from Lebron though
You find $100 on the ground… What do you buy?
A membership to Brazzers, anti itch cream & white shirts.
What is one thing you are scared of?
Not being able to ride my bike anymore
What kind of music are you into?
Death Metal, Indie, Dubstep, Thrash and Electronic for the most part
Who or what are some of the biggest influences on your life?
My Mother, my brother Paul, Junar Gwinn, Coleman Beabout, Dean Northcutt, Dane Wild, Kris Marcum, Cody Bowers, Flip, Justin, Wombat & Paul at Solutions Ramp Park
Where do you see yourself in the next few years?
Riding, traveling, progressing and living somewhere warm
Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
My Family, My Friends, Everyone at Albe’s, everyone at Solution Ramp Park for letting me ride when I don’t have any money and Kurt for doing the interview.
Anything else you want to say?
If it ain’t to flat, it ain’t all that.
