There’s something about trails builders and riders that is kind of crazy. I’m sure if you have ridden BMX long enough you have probably met one of the die hard trails guys and know what I’m talking about. These guys love busting their ass to create the most perfect setups and obsess over going higher, further and faster. Deluxe‘s newest Canadian rider, Dylan King, is one of the die hards. This guy lives off trails and I’m sure if he didn’t have a place to live, you would find him camping at the trails too. I figured it would be an awesome time to get to know the guy a little better and it just so happened to had this brand new edit that we are premiering above to go with his full interview. What was it that first got you into BMX? Any early memories come to mind?
My Uncle Brian Ross got my Cousin Taylor Ross and I into riding mountain bikes and racing BMX when we were young. A few years later we both switched to riding dirt jumps and skateparks and never stopped.
So, Deluxe recently picked you up. How did that all come about? How are things going so far? Do you have anything in the works with them?
Yeah, I am super stoked to be on Deluxe. All I want to ride is trails so it’s a perfect fit, and Mark has been Awsome! I am actually planning to meet the team down in the states to ride some legendary trails, such as Posh and Catty, this August on the deluxe American trip, so I’m really stoked for that.
It all came about when my friend Blaise Olson, Owner of Killemall distro, informed me he was getting Deluxe into Canada and wanted me to ride for them. I’m super pumped to ride for both Deluxe and Killemall!

Any other fresh sponsor news you can tell us about?
No sponsor news haha, but me and my digging mate, Luke Fulgham at ERBP (www.EarthRampBikeParks.com) have been finally working out some more contracts building Public trails since our first one at Vanier Park in summer 2010. We just built some private jumps for Anthill Films and Red Bull and will be building a public trail spot for the city of Abbotsford sometime this spring if all goes well.
Over the years, you have had the chance to ride a bunch of different trails. If you could only ride two sets for the rest of your life, which two would you pick and why?
If I could only ride 2 sets I’d say it would have to be mainline at Kush Trails (mine and Luke’s trails) in Burnaby B.C. and “BT” (bottle Toke) at Heavy Nettle(Adam Dyke’s trails)in Courtney BC. I guess main set at Kush because it is my baby and we can keep making it bigger and longer haha. And BT at heavy nettle because I had the best sesh of my life riding mostly that set at Heavy Nettle Trail jam last year and they might be getting plowed this year. Big RIP!
Let’s say Mark was going to send you and the Deluxe team on a trip anywhere in the world. Where do you go and why?
I guess I would have to say to France and the U.K because we are already going to my first choice, which is PA.
Since this winter was super weird and dry, how are things at Kush looking these days? Have you been doing much digging yet?
Things are looking really good! Me and Luke Fulgham have been digging all winter long. We took a quick break when he tore his knee this fall but since then we have been going a couple times a week at least. We have lots of new stuff at Kush as well as a new spot “Cariboo trails”, another spot we built for Anthill films, an undercover dirt jump set and of course we have also been fixing up Vanier Park For Vanier jam This June. We need more Diggers in town!

You and your buddy Luke started Earthramp Bike parks a few years ago. What’s that all about? How are things going with it? How many jobs have you guys had the chance to do?
My friends Luke Fulgam and Chester Jones and I started ERBP in 2010 to get the contract building a public trail spot by the beach in Vancouver at Vanier Park. We got paid by the city to build a sweet place to ride with our friends, right at the beach. It was a dream come true summer job! Since then we have been looking for contracts and just finally built a set of jumps for Redbull and anthill films and have another contract on the go in the near future.
We are hoping we can help create a new industry of Bike parks as big as the skatepark industry is.
Do you have any projects coming up this spring or summer at all that you are getting ready for?
Yes we do, we are supposed to be Building a Bike Park For the City of Abbotsford this spring. Hopefully we get to build some real big sweet jumps for that one. Me and my housemates are also building a ramp and trail set in our hard this summer so that will be super exciting.

I saw a photo of a proposal you were doing for a park a few weeks back that was a small scale of the trails with real dirt and everything. How long did that take to make? What did the people think of your presentation?
That was actually boss man Luke Fulgham who made that and it took him a few weeks to make with modeling clay and real dirt from kush trails. That was the proposal for the Abbotsford contract that we may be building this spring. The proposal went over pretty well other than a few mountain bikers who didn’t understand the concept of a 360 berm haha
If you had to guess, how many shovels have you gone through over the years?
Hmmmmmmmm……… haha hundreds? Vigoros all the way!
Where can you usually be found when you can’t ride the trails?
I can usually be found at one of our trail spots digging even if I can’t ride them. I rarely ride skateparks or street. But when I do I prefer to ride Hastings skatepark or “The Woodyard” which is Ron Mercer’s massive backyard ramp setup down the street from my house.
What’s one trick that no matter how many times you have tried, you can’t do?
I’d have to say 360 whips. I spin and whip goofy so it’s real akward.
What do you think you would be up to if you never got into BMX?
I honestly have no clue. Trails are the perfect outlet for creativity and the perfect sport as well as a chill place to hang out with friends.
What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding or digging? Anything else you are really good at?
Well when I’m not digging or working I can be found trying to fix up our ghetto house and yard. Other than that I like cooking and landscaping oh and I make a pretty good blaze guard.

So you work construction for a living. What kind of jobs are you usually working on? Is it hard to find the energy to ride after a full day of work?
I was doing renovations working for my friend, Chris Smith who actually rides bikes also, but he recently had a baby girl and doesn’t have any contracts on the go right now, so I have just been doing a landscaping job for the season and working for ERBP on the side to save up for riding trails and not working all summer.
So let’s say you find a big bag of cash in a duffel bag. What do you do?
First thing I do is Buy a backhoe for ERBP, then I buy a big property to build trails on close to kush trails! Anything left over goes into ERBP savings account and traveling.
What’s the craziest thing that has happened to you that nobody believes?
TRAILS
What’s the Dylan King method for picking up the Canadian babes?
Haha I don’t know of any methods exactly, I just kind of hope it goes well talking to them I guess.. haha usually start off with some pickup lines such as , “Hi”.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would you want to change and why?
Id make people less reliant on technology, and make more people go outside and explore the world.
What’s the last song you heard, movie you watched and website you visited?
Last song I heard was holy diver, by DIO, last movie I watched was Taken and the last website I visited was G-mail to open this document.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully still digging at Kush, just a little farther down the lines.
