Dylan Stark Interview

There’s no doubt that you have probably seen at least one edit of Dylan this past year. He has been all over the web video game this past year. I had the chance to hang out with Dylan in Toronto this past winter and not only is he suppppper good at riding bikes, he’s a real chill guy that’s good stuff off the bike too. I knew he had a bunch of different stuff going on with his sponsors these days so I figured it would be a good time to get to know him a little better. Let’s take a look at what he had to say. Don’t forget to leave Dylan some love in the comments!

Name: Dylan Stark or Dielon

Location: Riverside, California, United States, Earth, Milky Way

Sponsors: The Take, Index Ink, Alienation, Epic BMX and Lotek

Years Riding:6 or 9 years

What was it that first got you into BMX? Any early memories come to mind?
I used to race when I was younger then stopped and got into mountain bikes. When the local park started allowing BMX I got into it again.

How are things going with The Take these days? Does Jeff have anything lined up with you guys for the summer?
The Take is doing awesome right now. I’m stoked on all the new stuff Jeff has got lined up. I think we are going to have a East Coast trip but I could be wrong.

Your signature colorway has been out for a little while now. How has the reaction been to that? Any plans for other signature goodies or changing up the colorway at all?
I’m so stoked on having something “signature” even if its just a color. It’s gonna be called the Starkle Sparkle, haha.

What do you have going on with Alienation these days? Anything you are looking forward to?
Just been testing new products but thats about it.

What’s up with Index Ink? They have been popping up quite a bit lately. Do you have anything cooking with them?
My signature Tank top just came out with them. It’s gonna be available through Dan’s Comp too so I’m super stoked on that. Index is super dope!

Anything going on with DOWN these days? Do you guys have any new edits or anything that will be dropping soon?
DOWN died for about 3 months now ever since my Vx2000 broke, but just the other day we got a new camera so it’s back on again! Can’t wait to start filming stupid shit with all the homies.

Any other sponsor news you can tell us about?
Lotek just started flowing me shoes and I couldn’t be more stoked!

So you had a pretty gnarly crash a little while ago. Have you gone back to get that done now that you’re all good, or is that a one and done kind of trick?
One and done type trick, thats for sure, haha. I also found out the day after that someone did it already and it’s still on the hush hush, haha, but no hate towards him. It’s just apart of the game.

I’d imagine you haven’t been slacking since you have been back on it lately. Where have you bee riding lately? Any hot spots you have been real psyched on?
Actually, after the first week back I broke my foot messing around. Now it’s getting better and I’m getting back on my game.

Have you been filming for any video parts or edits at all? When can we expect to see some fresh footage from you?
I was gonna film for The Hunt contest but haven’t filmed anything yet due to being injured and no camera. I still have until August so I might still go for it. I’m also going over to the East Coast to film with Jeff Dupaul in a few weeks which should be a good time!

Do you have any other trips planned for the summer? Anywhere you really want to get to?
I’m just gonna be going to hang out with Jeff Dupaul but I’d really like to make a trip out to Woodward East. It has always been a dream of mine to go there.

I know you had some fun at the Canadian boarder this past winter while trying to get in for the Toronto BMX Jam. How do you feel about Canada after that? Any plans on going back?
hahaha! Let’s just say I love Canada, but not their border patrol, haha. I’d love to go back when its not covered in snow and freezing.

Speaking of trips. Let’s say you get a huge budget and a sweet van, but you can only take 5 riders, one filmer and one photographer. Who do you bring and where do you go? Why?
I dont know how I could just choose 5 people, this is way too tough of a question, haha.

You are one of those way overly gifted riders who can ride street, parks and trails like a beast and still hold your own at a contest. What’s the trick to being so dialed on everything you touch? Did you grow up racing?
I did grow up racing then got into racing downhill, my bike has always been my transportation and it’s just a second nature to me. I probably have better balance on my bike than I do when I’m just standing. Real talk.

Speaking of contests. Do you have any plans on hitting any this summer? Any plans of hitting the Dew Tour Open Qualifiers or anything?
Going to the Dew Tour would be sweet but I have no clue how to get into that or any of that stuff, haha.

I’d imagine you don’t really ever get burned out on riding. What are some things you do to keep things fresh?
I just get burnt out on riding the whack same spots all the time. I try to keep it fresh and go to the beach or do something else. I really like skating, surfing and mountain biking. Those help keep BMX fresh for me.

I’ve watched you do a whole bunch of crazy shit over the last year or two from your edits to Toronto. What’s one trick you can’t do for the life of you?
The trick that I really suck at is double bars and nose manuals. I can do double bars from time to time but my nosie game is horrible. I’ll just leave that trick to Caleb Quanbeck, haha.

What do you think you would be up to if you never got into BMX?
Probably racing motorcycles or riding mountain bikes.

What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding? Do you work or go to school at all?
I get down on the PS3 when I cant ride. Get at me Dstarklebutt is my PS3 gamertag for anyone that has a PS3. For work I do BMX shows at schools and teach a BMX summer camp in with Hucker and Legend Ryan Barspinner.

You have been on your Twitter game for a while now. What’s your link and what can people expect when they follow you?
Follow me @dylan_stark. I post pictures of things I see but mostly just say random shit.

Let’s say you find a big bag of cash on the side of the road. What’s the first thing you buy?
I’d buy my dad a new laptop and phone since someone stole his. Then I’d pay a lot of bills

I spotted a few real decent photos you took on your iPhone. Are you into shooting photos or were you just screwing around?
I’ve always been amazed by good photos but I don’t have the cashflow for photography so my phone will have to do, haha.

Let’s say you shredded California too hard and they kicked you out. Where do you go? Would you go back to Portland or would you go somewhere else?
I love Portland and wouldn’t mind living there again, but I would like to try somewhere new. Maybe Austin, Texas? I hear that place is rad but I dont think I could handle the summer heat there.

How are the ladies treating you these days? Any good stories you care to share?
Back then hoes didnt want me, Now I’m hot they all up on me

What’s something about yourself that might surprise people?
I’ve never been to mexico? It still surprises me

What’s the last song you heard, movie you watched and website you visited?
Nems – Sweet Dreams, Good Luck Chuck, Youtube.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Shout Out to my dad for being the best dad ever! Shout out to all my sponsors Index, The Take, Alienation, Lotek, Epic BMX for keeping me rolling, Shout out to all the homies I ride with and kick it with on the daily, shout out to Del Taco for being 24/7 and right next to my house, shout out to Arizona Iced Teas for being 99cents and so damn good, shout out to Kurt at The Union for interviewing me and listening to me ramble via interwebs.
