With how gnarly BMX is getting these days, it’s safe to say that nobody can really argue that having a little extra protection is never a bad thing. A lot of pros have started rocking helmets more frequently and it’s pretty obvious to see why with some real heavy injuries happening to guys like Brett Banasiewicz to really open everyones eyes on just what can happen. Our friends over at Kali Protectives hit us up recently to see if we wanted to check out one of their BMX specific helmets they offer. We figured it would be rad to give you guys a closer look at their Viva helmet since Nick Bruce had a lot of input on it. Let’s get into this!
Starting things off, let’s talk a little bit about Kali Protectives. Kali was started by a guy named Brad Waldron who worked in aerospace research and development before deciding to get into business for himself building protective equipment. Now, I don’t know if that means anything to you or not, but aerospace engineering has some very high standards as far as quality goes and it’s safe to say that attention to detail has rolled over to Brad’s latest venture. Kali makes helmets for everything from BMX to mountain bikes, dirt bikes and DOT certified motorcycle helmets. They even make snowboard helmets, knee, shin and elbow pads, chest protectors and gloves so they know a thing or two about making proper protection… and let’s be honest.. Making something with style that doesn’t make you look like a complete dork wearing it.
The Viva helmet is just one of a few of their BMX specifically designed helmets. This helmet starts out with their Composite Fusion Three design which uses multi-density hard and soft foams throughout the helmet to help with comfort, but absorb and displace impacts properly from heavy slams to minor bonks. There’s a durable ABS shell that is connected tightly with the foam inside to eliminate double impacts that can happen from non-certified helmets. As you can see above and below, they offer plenty of air flow with vents on the top and front and rear. They also have the Bumper Fit System which gives a precise fit with additional special pads featuring an absorbent cross-linked polymer material to both hold your head in place as well as assist with shock on impacts that you can put in place. The Viva helmet is EN 1078 and CSPS certified.
The Viva helmet is available in sizes of small, medium and large and you can use the Bumper Fit System pads to get a perfect fit and give a little extra comfort for your specific needs since every head is shaped a little differently.
The helmet has vents on the top, front and rear to help give you plenty of air flow so your head isn’t over heating while wearing the helmet without sacrificing strength.
One feature we really liked on this helmet is the adjustable strap. Instead of the traditional piece that you have to feed the strap through back and forth to get the right fit, this helmet uses a tab that you simply flip up, slide the strap to your desired place and then you flip the tab back down to lock it in place. It makes adjusting the helmet a quick and easy. Definitely a nice touch.
Black not really your color? The Viva helmet is also available in green and white.
Overall, we were definitely impressed with the Viva helmet from Kali Protectives and liked that it had all the top safety features without making a dorky looking helmet. It fits comfortably and offers plenty of air flow to keep you from feeling like you’re wearing an oven. We liked the extra padding for the Bumper Fit System to make it fit just right as well.
The Viva helmet is available worldwide through Kali Dealers with a price tag of $49.99.
