Jared Eberwein has been one of those reoccurring names that you know good things are always coming from these past few years. Jared always produces some real good riding for edits, holds his own in contests and in general is just a real good person. That could help sum up Jared a bit, but Jeff Harrington thought it was about time we caught up with him to find out a little bit more about the guy. Let’s take a look!
Name: Jared Eberwein
Age: Just turn 21, usually everyone is happy about this age, I just get more bummed the older I get =/ haha
Where you livin: Wonderful riding scene of Riverside, CA.
Sponsors: Redline Bicycles, Profile Racing, ODI Grips, and Hart & Huntington
What got you into BMX? And what is it that you like about riding?
The local skatepark opened up by my house when I was 14, I tell people this brief story and they give me a hard time kind of. I went to the skatepark for the first time on a scooter, JUST to scope it out. I saw bikes and wanted one. Met a really good friend who showed me the ropes and just went with it. I feel the thing that I fell in love with about riding at first was learning one thing, then another, then another, etc. That was addicting. Just going from one onto more and more. It sucks getting old, but appreciation comes with that. I love and notice more that comes with riding. Friendships, experiences, connections, travels whether it’s far or not and just the little things. It’s never ending.
Any good childhood stories that you feel shaped who you are today?
I’m at home, have all the time to come up with a story for this question, and I can’t think of anything. I guess I can say that I wasn’t a bad kid, but I got in trouble a lot, with a verity of people. Parents, relatives, school, random people, and the law, nothing big with cops. I went in an abandon house, and threatened a kid in elementary school. This just came to mind, I called my mom a B**** around the age of 7 or 8. Hid from her all day, but she caught me in the end and poured liquid soap in my mouth, then took a bar of soap and scraped it all over my teeth. Never did that again.
You helped design a Profile shirt with gummie bears on it… what up with that?
Pretty much anyone who knows me, knows that I probably eat too much candy. Gummy bears kind of happen to be a favorite candy of mine. Every now and then, Matt Coplon will ask the team if anyone has any ideas for shirts. I thought that it would be so cool to put gummy bears on a shirt, so I worked with my friend Dan Panzone (thanks Dan) and came out with this design. I look at it as gummy bears falling out of a bag that’s not there. I’m happy with it and its a great feeling seeing something you worked hard on be completed. Since I did that shirt, I’m always running ideas through my head about possible shirt designs, I like it!
Do you like that kind of involvement with your sponsors?
I always love to be a part of everything with my sponsors as much as I can and try to be creative as I can with new ideas. It’s been a few years now, but I worked with designer JQ from Redline and made this little brake adapter. It’s for bottom dual cables, right where the barrel adjusters goes. It is a removable brake piece. Instead of a removable piece that just holds one barrel adjuster, it has two holes that holds two barrel adjusters. It just basically does what the london mod did for everyone, but just a slimmer version of it. It stays tucked under the top tube out of the way. Other then that, shirt ideas, changing parts ideas and just trying to have good input on things.
When you go out to eat, what looks good to you on the menu?
I’m really picky and I like everything plain. I eat a lot of italian food, which its probably just spaghetti or pizza. I also eat a lot of steak, so when I look at a menu I usually look and see what the steak or pizza/spaghetti options are. Every now and then I’ll try to branch out and try something new.
What are the key ingredients of motivation for you, on and off your bike?
On my bike, start off with good sleep, haha. I’m gonna say that goes for everything. Good weather and friends to ride with. I don’t like being alone. I’m weird with music, I’ll listen to my iPod when I ride somewhere that I ride all the time, but I won’t with somewhere that I’m unfamiliar with and hardly ever with dirt. Include some happiness and I’m set up for great times.
Off my bike, I like to keep things neat, organized, and clean, I’m not that obsessed with things being that way, but I’m definitely fueled when it comes to getting ANYTHING along those lines.
Matt Coplon is team manager of Profile and Mark Filipowicz is team manager of Redline… who would win in fight between them?
This will be fun to answer, I just met Flip a few months ago, so I don’t have too much to go off of with Flip but I’ll try. Matt is in a hardcore band, screaming like crazy and hard to understand. Im pretty sure Matt has been apart of some gnarly mosh pits. I don’t know for sure but with a band like that I would imagine it’s a must. Also no offense, I think Flip rides a frame thats in the 19’s, just sayin, Flip is a small dude. I’m gonna have to go with Gnarly ol’ Vegan Agave’ lovin Matt Coplon.
But for laughs, I’ll get all my TM’s involved, Larry Alvarado will come in and rock both of them like the tall, crazy good fighter I’ve witnessed him be (He’s a nice guy full of love now). While that’s all going on, Heath Pinter will sit down, put his feet up and relax and watch the show. That’s the run down.
Have you ever been in a limo?
I know where this question came from, I still tell this story all the time. I usually start it off as’ “Have you ever got picked up in a big blue hummer limo from the airport”. hahaha I was going to Chicago for Props MegaTour 9 for Profile, I showed up a day early, Jeff Harrington, Trent McDaniels, and the owner of Circus Skatepark (Who’s limo it was) picked me up from the airport. Jeff was telling me just look for a big blue car, and I thought to myself “what kind of a description is that”. I walked out a little bit and there it was a huge limo with those two hanging out of it yelling. Good times!
You recently had a bad crash at the Dew tour, can you tell us about the crash and what happened?
Yeah, it’s definitely my FREAK accident, I always get nervous when I ride new jumps I’ve never rode before. The first day I was able to get the jumps down and slowly start tricking them. Practice the next day, right before the LCQ was about to start, I was riding good, planning my run and getting ready. Right before our runs started, I hung up on a 3 on the first set and got shot over the bars, not a bad fall, but a fall, a little banged up. I went down pretty hard on my second run, went head first into the third lip after I messed up on jumping the long 30 footer, dazed me a little bit. Third run on the third jump, not enough speed but I still went for a double whip and was coming up short so I went to bail. I was above the landing at this point, I threw the bike between my legs and progressed to go forward like any other bail. The bars went right into the top of the landing and stood straight up, as I was going down at a angle, the bars went in my butt crack about the middle of my butt, and cut me all the way to the edge of my butt hole =( As I hit the ground I ruptured my spleen too, for the second time. I got to keep my spleen again, an for my butt, luckily no muscles were torn. I got stitched up and I can still control my bowel movements like normal. Shitty accident but it could be worse, so I feel lucky in that sense. When Redline found out I got hurt, they made this small poster board and some of the workers signed it, and sent it down to SLC right away. Flip got it and took it around the Dew Tour and got all the riders to sign it and show some love, so I just wanted to thank Redline for there support and all the riders in SLC at the time. Thank you!!
What do you think the road to recovery has in store for you?
I’m not sure, but I’m just trying to find things for me to do so I have something to do. Redline got the team GoPro’s, so I’m trying to learn a little something about that and editing (hard). Going to paint the rims on my car soon, get to build a new setup soon too, and hopefully once my butt heals up I can get on my road bike to stay in shape and just be on a bike. I’m waiting for it to heal because I didn’t mention once I got home from Utah, the stitches in my butt gave way, so I’ve had an open wound on my butt for 4 weeks now, still not closed but hopefully soon.
Any shout outs or thanks?
I want to thank my family and friends, thanks to Chuck from Redline and Flip and everybody apart of Redline. Matt at Profile, awesome guy. ODI Grips, and Hart & Huntington. Heath, Luke and Lakin, Shane at the Compound, awesome environment great place be and ride. Mike Saavedra and Larry Alvarado for taking me under their wings when I first started. Love to thank UPS for their amazing insurance, I would be screwed right now without it. Huge thanks to my girlfriend Devin and my mom for taking care of me with my recent injury, a situation I can’t take care of on my own. A thanks I’ve never thought of, but thanks to the community of Jurupa in Riverside for building the skatepark I call home that got me started.
