Micky Marshall is one of those guys who can kill it on a bike, but it seems like he doesn’t get enough attention. To be entirely honest, I really didn’t know a whole lot about Micky. When Crandall told me he would be somebody good to interview, I was stoked on the idea since it’s fun to get to know the people I know little about. Check out what Micky had to say, some real good photos and videos, and then leave him some love in the comments!
Name:
Micky Marshall
Location:
Baton Rouge Louisiana as of now
Sponsors:
FBM, Savage South clothing, Sun Ringle, and Orchid footwear
Years riding:
Somewhere around 14 years
Any real early memories come from when you first started riding?
It’s hard to remember shit that happened yesterday for me, hit my head one too many times. The best memory ever from bmx is probably going to the FBM ghetto comp. and seeing that shit go down, that was my first big bmx event I ever went to.
You have been riding for FBM for quite a while now. How are things going with them? Any big news involving you and them?
FBM is going good, not too sure if there are any big plans, just ride. I think I am going to be filming for an FBM part soon so that will be fun.
I’d imagine you will be going on the Gypsy Caravan Tour this year? What are you looking forward to the most about that trip? Anything you are worried about?
Yea I’m going on it again, I’m looking forward to ever second of it, it was amazing last year. I’m not worried about anything, it’s hard to worry about anything when you’re rolling with like 50 plus dudes
How’s the riding scene down where you are living these days? Any dudes you have been riding with lately that people should be keeping their eyes out for?
My roommate Cody Millar kills it, he does whatever he wants on a bike, its nuts. Geoff Simmons is king of all apes also. Someone needs to check these dudes out.
Other than your trip with FBM, do you have any other trips planned for the summer? Anywhere in particular you would like to go?
Yea I got some shit planned, I’m going to try and sell everything I own on eBay except for my bike and cloths then I think I’m just going to cruise by myself for a while. I really want to go ride out west, Oregon and Utah so I think I am going to shoot for that goal. See where the road takes me.
How are the trails down there? Do you feel like there has been a lot more talk about trails these days compared the last few years or is that just me?
Trails are blowing up again these days, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Ohio with the Amish people. There was nothing to ride out there so growing up that is all we rode was trails. Me, my brother and my friend Mike Needs and his brother would dig trails every day all day, then I moved down here and there wasn’t any trails and that kind of sucked but it gave me a chance to learn how to ride some ramps and street. It opened my mind up a bunch.
Where can you usually be found riding on a perfect day?
I’m not sure probably working
It seems like you are into doing some pretty big drops. What’s the craziest thing you have jumped off of?
I don’t know. Off my bike was probably a school back home. I jumped out of these rafters in the gym it was big. I was dumb as fuck for doing it, broke my heel and almost got the gym teacher fired. On my bike, I don’t really know maybe the building in Austin.
Who or what are some of your biggest influences when it comes to riding?
Friends that I have met through riding, and all my heroes from riding people I look up to, I’m just like anyone else who has grown up riding bmx.
Do you ever get burned out on riding? What do you do to keep it fresh?
I never once got burned out in riding. I don’t know, its all think about and its what I love most in life, there’s nothing out there that even compares to riding. I just block out all the shit talking kids do these days and I do my own thing everyday. I don’t need anyone to like what I do and I don’t care what anyone else is doing.
If you could change anything about BMX, what would you change and why?
I don’t really care to change anything, there’s more places to ride these days, more people to ride with these days, and like I said I’ll do my own thing and be happy as hell doing it. So why change anything.
What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding bikes?
Work and smoking weed. I smoke a lot of weed, it’s an all day affair, hang out and chill
Do you still work at that Motorcycle yard? Are you pretty big into motorcycles?
Yea I still work there, I’m not that big into bikes, it just kind of runs in the family.
What are some of the biggest influences on your life outside of BMX?
My younger brother Adam is the biggest and best influence I could have.
What makes for a good night of partying? What is your weapons of choice?
Big bag of some sticky ass buds, BIG ol’ bag and a big ass bong I’ll be happy all night, maybe some mushrooms to help it all out.
What is something you wish you could do more, and something you know you should do less?
I wish I could travel and ride more, but I pay for most of my traveling so it’s pretty hard. I wish I could ride everyday and that is all I would have to worry about, but I can’t, I got shit I have to take care of and it sucks but oh well.
Have you ever been in a fight or put in jail? What’s the story behind that if it has happened?
I been arrested twice both for riding my bike. It was fuckin’ lame and not much of a story. I ran into some dumbass cop and got taken in.
What kind of music are you into? Any bands you suggest people to check out?
I dig older music, Beatles, The Doors, Zepplin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, anything from that time period pretty much
Do you spend much time on the computer? Any favorite websites?
eBay
What is the wildest experience of your life?
There’s too much stuff, maybe acid.
What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next few years?
I would love to be able to ride everyday with out worrying how I’m going to eat some food that day, I would also love to travel around and not worry about money while doing that to. I just want to ride my bike and one way or another that’s what I’m going to do. Whether it is on my own or not I’m going to the places I want to go. I’ll make it happen
What is the best advice you can give, or have been able to give?
You could always get higher whether it’s on your bike or on your couch
Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Yea thanks to Crandall, Big Dave, John Lee, Jon Paul Erbs, and everyone else at FBM you guys kick ass. Jon wells is an amazing man at Sun Ringle and also kicks ass. Derek and Clark at Orchid I would wear your guys shoes no matter if I rode for you or not so rock on there. Lou and Geoff at Savage South that shit is family there. My brother most of all, best dude in the world right there love that dude. I thank you for this right here thanks man and everyone in the BMX industry no matter what you do, thank you for doing it.
