Monster Army Recon Tour – Skatelab

July 30, 2013

Here’s a look at what went down during the Skatelab skatepark stop on the Monster Recon Tour! The kids out in California have definitely been getting wild on the box jumps at these contests, but this one looks like it was more geared towards the street guys this time around. Take a peek at what went down!

“SOLANA BEACH, Calif., July 30, 2013 — The Monster Army Recon Tour presented by Replay XD held the ninth stop at the famous Skatelab in Simi Valley, CA. The Recon Tour blew the doors off the building by hosting the first BMX contest in over a decade. The course was street oriented and challenged the riders to show their technical skills on the stair sets, down rails, and the bowl on the upper level of the park.

Emmett Thomas, who is no stranger to the Recon Tour series, showed his technical skills and walked away with the win in the 13-15 age group. Next up was the 16 + division where a battle for 1st was brewing between Cory Clark from Palmdale, CA and Andrew Coleman from Benson, AZ. Cory barely edged out Andrew in the end and claimed the top podium position and all the bragging rights. The Play Open division was really stacked and all the riders had their work cut out for them. Brian Fox from Deerfield Beach, FL impressed the judges with his speed and power on the course. He had technical tricks backed by big lines and transfers that no other competitor was doing. Brian earned the 1st place podium finish, but because he already had a wildcard spot in the Play Am Finals from an earlier Florida series, 2nd place finisher Ed Percival will be taking home the golden ticket and the 9th spot to compete in the Play AM finals.

The day wrapped up with a rail jam contest on the stair features with the winner taking home a Hyper frame. The athletes put their bodies on the line by doing some of the most technical tricks we witnessed all day. Dave Canary took home the Hyper frame with a fakie full cab down the wedge gap in the last seconds of the competition.

Special thanks to our tour partners Monster Army, Hookit, Replay XD, A3, Vans, XRyderz, Madcatz, Pro-Tec, Movietickets.com, Hyper BMX, Mike Spinner, Fat Tony, and Todd from Skatelab.

Final results from each division:

Play Open Final Results:

1st- Brian Fox
2nd- Edward Percival
3rd- Sebastian Smith

16 + Final Results:

1st- Cory Clark
2nd- Andrew Coleman
3rd- Fernando Hernandez

13-15 Final Results:

1st- Emmet Thomas
2nd- Connor Hart
3rd- Jack Straiton

The BMX Economics

Edit: This graphic, which was a quick 5 minute photoshop job, has been a large focus for a lot of criticism lately… Sadly, more than the words. This graph is not accurate at all, and was simply just a form of showing that there are more and more knock off BMX brands popping up every day producing more and more products causing there to be more supply than demand. I don’t have numbers to verify, and I sure as shit know I wouldn’t deny it being inaccurate but there are no numbers to verify, just constant complaints about there being too many brands now days… It was just something to go with the text. Apologies to anyone who was offended by this. I’ll put a picture of my room mates dogs red rocket or something that has no relevance if something like this comes up again.

2013 has been a really weird year for the BMX industry. I’m sure the majority of riders don’t really know or care because most of you are just worried about when and where you’re going to ride next and and that’s about it… But I’m sure some of you who pay a little more attention to the industry side have been seeing changes or even brands and riders talking about how times have been rough. When Dave and I were talking about some different things the other day, we got on the subject of how some things have changed over the years that I personally feel has caused the BMX economy to hit a recession so to speak. I figured since nobody really has talked about it before, I’d put together a little something explaining my perspective and what I think is going on. Curious to what the hell I’m thinking? Let’s get into this…

Deluxe – “Part Deux” Mark and Jeremy at Hills and Mountains

July 30, 2013

I’ve definitely been looking forward to Tuesdays more lately just because Deluxe has been dropping sections from their “Part Deux” DVD online. Here’s their latest section to hit the internet featuring Mark Potoczny and Jeremy Ball at the Hills and Mountains trails! So good.

“Mark Potoczny and Jeremy Ball session one of the finer spots in the UK – namely Hills & Mountains – for their second joint section on PART DEUX, filmed by Patrick Best. Cheers to the locals…
For our second full-length film, we decided to mix things around from Welcome To Deluxe. This time out we ventured to some choice spots that our team riders created and nurture on a daily basis – from Southern California to Pennsylvania, from the Midlands of England to Southern France. We also took the team on tour to discover new spots, cook up some lines, throw some shovel-loads, and have a good time. Because that’s what we’re all about… enjoy.

The Level Below – “Chick’n Nugg’t” – Jeff Klugiewicz

July 30, 2013

Here’s the section I’ve been waiting to pop up online. The Level Below just dropped Jeff Klugiewicz’s section from the “Chick’n Nugg’t” DVD for your viewing pleasure. Not only is this video part jam packed with some absolutely dialed riding (and some heavy slams) but Jeff was the man behind this whole video, so he played double duty hard on it. Hit that play button because this is a MUST SEE.

Josh Schwarz – Unfinished Edit

July 30, 2013

The thing about BMX that I think we all know is that injuries are going to happen and it looks like Josh Schwarz found himself breaking a few bones while filming for this new edit. The good news? Josh was able to unlease his big bag of technical lip tricks and some blasted bangers before taking a crash that put him out of commission for a bit. Hit the play button on this and wish Josh a fast recovery so we can see more of him sooner than later.

“This was filmed over 2 days, it was meant to be a full edit but due to Josh breaking his collar bone and 2 ribs in the last clip we had to cut it short! Josh is off the bike for around 6 weeks but will be back and shredding in no time and as soon as he’s ready we will be filming a new edit to show everyone how good he is at riding!

I wish Schwarz a speed recovery and cant wait to see him back on the bike.

I hope you enjoy the edit, please share and follow Josh on instagram @joshschwarz
