There’s no denying that with all of the progression of BMX, there’s been a lot of focus on making putting strength in products where it counts. One of the things we have seen a lot these past two years or so are more brands offering beefier and larger cranks that are designed to take on the heavy drops and abuse that they’re being put through on street, ramps and trails. We have seen a big resurgence of 22mm cranks, along with a few giving the 24mm spindle size a go. One option that will be hitting shops in March are the new Big Bitchin’ cranks from Subrosa that are a larger, more bitchin’ version of their original Bitchin’ cranks that have been available in a 19mm version for a few years now. With them being just a few weeks out from release, we figured it would be a good time to take a closer look! Let’s do this!
The Big Bitchin’ cranks start out with oversized 100% Death-Proof post-weld heat-treated seamless 4130 chromoly arms that feature a unique forged square design that is great for crank arm slides and to help resist denting that wrap the spindle bosses for additional strength. The arms also feature rounded pedal bosses to help reduce the dreaded ankle bite and an increased angle on the arms giving you a slightly wider stand for balance and to help clear the wider chain stays on frames due to the larger tire sizes available these days.
The arms slide on to a hollow, 22mm, 48-spline spindle that use flush mount 8mm hex bolts that keep the cranks nice and tight while giving it a clean look.
The Big Bitchin’ cranks will be available in March through all shops and mail-orders that carry Subrosa worldwide with 170mm and 175mm arm length options, colors of black and chrome and a weight of 30.9 oz (Bossless) / 32.6 oz. (bolt-on). These cranks will be available as a right and left side drive bossed version and a boss less version for those of you who are looking to run a 22mm Spline Drive sprocket.
If you’re looking to get your self a set of these as soon as they are released, you can have your local shop get ahold of Sparky’s Distribution for pre-order now.
