Quinten Carston Interview

There’s no way I could have done an interview with Phlandus and not done an interview with Quinten. One doesn’t exist in a story without the other it seems like, and combined they shred way too hard. Then I found out that Quinten finally got his hands on a camera so that means the world will finally have their chance to see what these guys are actually capable of. I finally got a chance to send over some questions to Quinten and it’s ready to go, the day after two edits with him in them dropped. So check out what he had to say, some photos by Ben Austin, and the two new edits, then leave him some love in the comments…

Name: Quinten Andrew Carston

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Sponsors: Underline, Standard

Years riding: 10

What was it that first got you into BMX? Any early memories come to mind?
Well just like every kid at the time, I had a shitty bmx bike, it was a trend to have a GT or Dyno with pegs and a gyro but no one around me really knew anything about real riding. I’m sure you all know the story about Phlandus and I having to catch birds out of his moms basement in order for him to get a bmx bike. We finally were trendy and both had bmx bikes but for some reason we both just kept riding and trashing bikes every month. Then we found out about Dans Comp and bike videos.

There’s no doubt that if you are brought up, Phlandus is brought up shortly after. Do you feel like having him there to keep you motivated is what kept you riding? Do you think you would still be riding if he quit along the line?
I’m sure we always get brought up together because we always ride together and have been real good friends since we met. It’s really kind of crazy how we both picked up bmx because we didnt know what riding was until maybe 2 years after being friends. P does keep me motivated, it’s good to have a friend that is always down to ride whenever. Eh, I would still ride if P didnt but I don’t ever see him quitting.

It sounds like you picked up a camera recently. What did you get your hands on? Can we expect more edits now that you got a camera?
Yeah, we got a camera from our good friend Jonah. It’s seriously about time because I’ve never had constant access to a camera and when I do get clips they are usually on hold and spread out on 5 different cameras. And YES edits are gonna be coming always now!

I know Eric Holley has been working on a project for a while. Are you going to be apart of that video at all?
Yeah, he just dropped a fresh little edit of a lot of Minnesota riders called Skworl. Skworl was an inside joke some of us had for a while and after time developed into Team Skworl. I’m sure you all will see more in the future.

The Twin Cities are known for some real good riders. Other than Phlandus, who are you usually riding with these days?
Yes, there are some damn good riders here. I’ve been riding a lot with Eric Holley, Nick Anderson, Justin Dewitt, and recently started riding with Lee Mies, they are all some really rad dudes. There are a lot more guys I’d like to ride with more but its hard to get everyone together at the same time.

I know you made a trip down to Austin last winter to get away from the frozen tundra that Minnesota becomes this time of year. Do you have plans to make it down south this winter at all?
Yeah, it’s basically a must to get the hell out of here in the winter, so its gonna happen sometime. Let’s not talk about that just yet. Winters here are horrible.

What’s the scariest thing you have done on your bike?
Oh man, thats a hard one, probly just some big handrails with drops on a side.

Who are or were some of the pros you looked up to growing up?
Van homan was a huge influence, Chris bennet, Rick Moliterno, The Gonz. As of now, I’d have to say Davey Watson is one of my favs

If you could load up a van with 5 people, and a pretty solid budget, who would you bring and where would you go?
Phlandus, Eric Holley, Nick Anderson, that man Miles Rogoish, Lee, Just Dewitt. Man, we need a bigger van because I’d wanna bring a lot of people! I dont care where we go. Just as long as its warm and we can ride.

It seems like everyone has that one trick they just can’t figure out. Anything you can’t do for the life of you?
Barspins

What do you think you would be into if you never got into BMX?
Nothing as cool as bmx that’s for sure. Probably going to school or something.

What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding? Do you work or go to school at all?
Yeah, I work Monday through Friday at a bike distributor. Frisbee golf is fun.

It seems like there is always something going on up there in the cities. Do you go to shows, parties, or anything like that much or are you pretty low key?
There usually is something always going on. I like to go to bars and watch the UFC fights. Parties are definetly a must. I guess I am low key, but when the times right people usually can’t shut me up.

What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next few years?
Honestly, to just have the best time ever. Never really know what is gonna happen or what I’ll be doing but BMX is the one thing that I will always be doing.

What’s the last song you heard, movie you watched, and website you visited?

ELO – “It’s a living thing”, 1408, Vital

If you had to sum yourself up in 3 words, what would those words be?
I. AM. COOL.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Like to thank Taylor Trygstad for editing vids a long the way and being a good friend. Thanx Eric for puttin up with us not coming out to get clips for the vid. Thanks, Phlandus for being a crazy ass black guy.

Anything else you want to say?
WE FINALLY HAVE A CAMERA!
