I’m seriously getting so stoked to see this Red Bull R.Evolution contest…
“Red Bull R.Evolution: BMX champions travel straight from London to Berlin
Munich, August 16, 2012 – It’s the first opportunity for a revenge: right after the thrilling duels at the season’s highlight in London, the entire BMX elite will now compete at Berlin, Germany. Luis Brethauer, Maik Baier (both GER) as well as medal winner Carlos Oquendo (COL) don’t want to miss out on the most innovative BMX race event of the year. Red Bull R.Evolution at Mellowpark Berlin will kick off on Friday, August 24th 2012, at 7 pm. In case you ride good enough yourself to battle it out with the stars of the scene: there’s still eight starting places for the qualification heats on Thursday up for grabs! For further information on applying for the qualification as well as on tickets and live webcast, please visit redbull.de/revolution.
Never before has a BMX event in Germany seen a starting field like this. 11 of the 40 invited participants are returnees from London, including 3rd placed Carlos Oquendo! The who’s who of the international BMX riders will compete at Red Bull R.Evolution, including Raymon van der Biezen (NED, 7th in the UCI world ranking) or Nick Long (USA, 21st in the UCI world ranking). But also some stars of the scene will rock Mellowpark, like racer turned freestyler Kris Fox (USA) and race legend Mike Day (USA). German rider Luis Brethauer (20th in the UCI world ranking) is full of anticipation: “I just came back from London, and now I’m really up for Red Bull R.Evolution. At London, we had such a huge crowd. Now, we can offer our home crowd an insane race and give our fans something back. I’m really looking forward to the event, the atmosphere and having fun with the other riders.”
The new supercross track will certainly revolutionize the German BMX scene. It’s 450 metres long and built on a 120 x 60 metre area. 8,500 cubic metres of dirt, 500 cubic metres of surface material (Prom Grand) and 100 tons of asphalt (steep banks) were used. The course was designed by Tom Ritzenthaler, who also constructed all UCI SX tracks. “As a sporting challenge, this is for sure the most demanding supercross track in the world, even excelling Beijing and London. Thanks to the innovative track design, we can reach new speeds. Germany has eagerly awaited a track like this”, German national BMX coach Florian Ludewig said.
This is great news not only for the German and European BMX scene but even more for Berlin’s youth. After the event, the track built by Red Bull will be turned over to Mellowpark – another milestone that will find its place here at the end of August. “We’re very proud of what we have achieved for the kids, but also for the pro riders here. We’ve had a tight and long-lasting cooperation with Red Bull with the aim to promote the sport in Germany. Now, this cooperation has culminated in the new track that will take BMX in Germany to the next level”, Mellowpark project manager Jens Werner said.
Entrance to Red Bull R.Evolution is 5 Euro. Tickets are available in pre-sale at Mellowpark, several advance ticket offices, and by email at ticket@mellowpark.de.
