A few weeks back I posted an interview with Chris Zeppieri and CB Coombs about the new AOTC video. We talked about what it took to make it, who was in it and what people could expect from it. Obviously, reading about it and actually seeing it are two entirely different things. I liked what I was hearing in the interview and figured I needed to check this one out. When I got my copy, they sent through TWO extra copies for me to give away to you guys. All you have to do is “Like” The Union in the top right corner. That’s it. I’ll pick the winners in a week or so. But back to the point of this post; here’s what I thought of the video…
Going into the video, I had some expectations since this was the second video. I wasn’t expecting Stew Johnson or Ryan Navazio good, but I was expecting AOTC good. That means I was expecting a scene video that’s loaded with some real good dudes and good times. Let’s run through this by section quick…
The video starts out with the man behind a good portion of the filming and all of the editing – Chris Zeppieri. Just because he spends a lot of time behind a camera doesn’t mean this guy can’t shred. He definitely had his way with plenty of the Boston spots.
Following Chris was CB Coombs, who also helped produce this video. I know CB was swamped with school and everything so I didn’t expect an over the top section. There’s definitely some freecoaster goodness in this section, but nothing mind blowing. I was a fan of his last clip though. I should also mention it gets a little awkward with the song and music video clips mixed in, but I laughed.
Chris Tolley and Chris Saunders split up the next section. It’s a fairly short but sweet section. Solid riding.
After that came Craig Passero’s Whammo section which I’m assuming was his better clips that he saved from those WhamCam edits that popped up for a while last year. It’s filled with a bunch of guys I’ve never heard of, but all pretty talented riders. Pauly Cvikevich and Craig were the only two I had heard of, then there was Bobby Whitley, Tom Passero (assuming this is Craig’s older brother?), Franco Leon, Tom O’Grady and Chris Peterman. Craig ends the section and I wish he had a full section. I know that dude has been filming for a ton of other projects the last year or two, but I don’t think there’s such thing as too much footage of Craig.
Following the Whammo section comes The Come Up‘s Adam Grandmaison. Adam has a lot of jibby ledge clips that are pretty cool. However, Adam, please pull up your damn pants. Your asshole was hanging out on every clip and it left me wondering how you ride with your pants that low over paying attention to the riding.
The next mix section features Steve Kay, Frank Juliano, Mike Carni, Rob Sturges, Dan McAllister, Grant Germain, Billy Makotsis, Jonny Nemecek and James Carlucci. Each guy brought a few solid clips to the table for this section.
The Ian and Dylan Bresnahan section was one of my favorites. They do a bunch of tag team clips and unique shit that made me laugh. One-hander landers are always acceptable if you’re having fun. I’d like to see more from these dudes.
I’ve decided to name this next section the “I want more” section. This mix has a ton of different guys like Chris Childs, Sean Burns and Brian Histand who all only have one or a few clips. I wanted to see more from these guys since they’re always doing good stuff. The others in the section include Nick Fournier, Lucas D’ Anglelo, Pat Politano, Gary Jackson, Herb Dirt (sweet name), Chris Murphy, Nick Mc Elwain, John Mayo, Jake Gayewski and Adam Spitalny.
I’m going to give the BMXfu section triple points for use of MOP for their song.(Wrote DMX earlier… that’s what I was listening to when I wrote it. Whooooops) Mix that with some reaaaaaaally good stuff from Charlie Crumlish, Andrew White, Bobby Hill, Jake Montgomery, Lee Dennis, Jordan Krupa. Chris Orbell, Glen Hoerdt, Phil Barlett, Nick Dagg, Jordan Dwan and Shawn Swain and you have my favorite section (that was actually a tie with another…) from the video. I almost feel bad saying the BMXfu section was my favorite from the AOTC video, but I’m not going to lie when they are always producing awesome shit.
Zack Cooke has a real chill section with his relaxed smooth style. He’s definitely a treat to watch since he’s progressed quite a bit since the first AOTC video.
Alright, so the final section goes to Brett Silva. This guy got that tied spot for my favorite section. If you saw the first AOTC video, you will see that he’s progressed so much since the first video. I was reallllly psyched on pretty much every clip. Definitely see a future with this dude if he keeps it up like he has been.
The last section is filled with crashes and goofy shit mixed to Ke$ha. I almost feel a section like this should make an appearance in every video.
There’s also a ton of stuff in the Bonus section the first AOTC video, AOTC: Do It, AOTC 5×5, Chris Zep AOTC 1.5 , Dan McAllister Edit, Whammo Extras, Trailer (See below), Brett’s Wheel (See below), Zack Commercial, Crashes
The filming was smooth and wasn’t hard to watch at all. Maybe it was Chris’ Z-Rig? All I know is that Chris and CB did a good job along with all the other guys helping out with the filming. Chris did a good job keeping the editing simple and mixing in the different clips from the movies made for some good laughs. The video is primarily based around Boston, so there are quite a few spots that get their fair share of clips. That’s really only a small percentage of clips since that city appears to have endless spots.
The soundtrack for the video was a good mix. You can find stuff from Science Killer, Black Keys, Spencer Davis Group, Dope Boys, MOP, Gang Starr, Ringo Starr, Khrysis, George Harrison, Gloria Estefan, 9th Wonder, The Bar-Kays , Red Simpson, Clarence Carter and that drunk Ke$ha girl.
Overall, I think the video turned out real well and it didn’t disappoint my expectations. You can pick up a copy from the AOTC store for $10 so you aren’t breaking the bank at all either. I’d imagine this will be available through some of the mail-orders here soon like the first video too.
You can find out more about the video on the AOTCBMX.COM.
