A few months back I was talking to Mark Noble about what he had going on with Deluxe these days… well, those days. He mentioned that he was having the team get together for a little UK trails tour that they were going to be filming for a DVD. There’s a few reasons I was stoked about that news. The first was that Deluxe was making an all trails edit, and the second was that I’m well aware of how dialed some of the trails are in the U.K.
About a week ago a copy of the DVD showed up in my mail box, and this is what I thought of “Welcome to Deluxe”…
So lets start with the basics. The concept of the video is to take the team (at the time) Mark Mulville, Dave Davros, Pompom, Frog, Maxime Bimer and Aidan on a trip all over the U.K for the Barend, Organic, Aliano’s, Villj, Cothill, Chertsey, Epsom, Wingham, and Peynier trails. Alright, so you already know the guys can ride, and the trails are going to be dialed. Sounds like a pretty solid combo to me.
When I popped the video in the first time, I was pretty excited because I really didn’t know what to expect from the video. I had seen the trailers and the first one was just them driving in rain and I got a little weary of how much riding actually got done. I quickly realized that the rain didn’t seem to slow things down too much for these guys. I think the only part where rain came into play was at Epsom and they were riding while it rained a bit.
I personally wasn’t super firmiliar with most of the guys riding besides Mark Mulville, but that’s just because the team is more U.K based and I have enough trouble keeping up with all the U.S guys as is.
I was also a little worried when I saw Mark Mulville had left Deluxe to ride for Subrosa a few weeks before the video had dropped. I didn’t know if he was going to have clips in the video still or what… but luckily they are still on good terms and the clips stayed.
The riding itself was pretty solid. There wasn’t a lot of out of control bangers, but more just flowing and the classic turndowns, tuck no-handers, tables, 360’s and such. There were a few backflips and x-up supermans tossed in the mix as well. I personally was most pleased with Mark Mulville’s riding. It goes without saying he has so much style and bike control and makes everything just look easy. I’d say Mark has the most clips in the video as well so that might have made this DVD a little harder to make if he didn’t have his clips in the video after leaving the team.
The filming and editing was taken care of by Patrick Best. The name sounds pretty new to me, but I’m sure I’ve seen something of his floating around before. Either way, he did a good job of maintaining steady shots that kept up with the guys through the lines, and didn’t cut heads off much at all. I was definitely into his style of filming and it went well with the riding. The editing as well was pretty straight forward. Not a lot of fades or anything, just clip after clip and clean, straight forward section changes. If you haven’t caught on, I don’t get into the film burns, and excessive after effects that some videos produce.
The trails… Alright, I’m bringing this up as its own section for this reason. All the trails these guys visit are so dialed and clean. If you’re a trails rider I’m sure you will be caught staring at the lines instead of the riding itself quite a bit. Every set they went to looked like so much fun and well taken care of. I’d like to give a big shout out to all the guys maintaining the trails the Deluxe crew came through on. So good!

The video itself runs for just under 30 minutes not including the credits. The credits have Mulville’s ’09 web edit, Organic summer clips, and Digging days at Barend.
Overall, I thought the video was pretty good. The video wasn’t made to show off the big banger tricks these guys do. It was more of a way to showcase the fun that was had on the Deluxe trip with the team, along with some of the best trails in the U.K. I think that if you’re into trails, you will be really stoked on the video. I wouldn’t recommend it for a rider who is strictly street or park. It won’t have the same effect on you.
I personally was really impressed with Mulville, the trails they went to, and the filming and editing.
