I had been wanting to try out some new bars for quite a while now for some reason. When I saw Brian Kachinsky’s bike I noticed he had the new DK Sigma bars. I liked the look and figured it was something I’d be into trying out. Fast forward a few weeks and this is what I thought of them.
When I got Lumberjack bars a while ago (like two years ago already?) I told myself there was no way that I’d ever ride anything bigger than those. I mean there really is a pretty solid line of when bars become TOO big. Well, sure enough I broke that idea into pieces when I tossed these 8.625″ rise bars on my bike. Oh yeah, added a whole .375″ in height from my previous bars. Monster Truck.
The bars come with the 8.625″ rise, 28.5″ width, 12° backsweep, 1° upsweep and a weight of 29 oz. They are 13 butted and a 3/4″ cross bar to save a little weight as well.
If you made it through the video you would have noticed I cut about a half inch off on both sides. I don’t do the super wide bars thing. I’ll probably end up cutting them down a little more yet since I like my bars to be about 26.75″ or 27″ tops but just have been too lazy to finish it off.
Upon the first session I did feel a little off with them. I normally don’t have much of a problem getting into unclicked turndowns and lookbacks, but it just wasn’t happening. The added height threw me for a toss. I guess that will happen when you change up stuff though. I eventually got used to it and the tricks started coming back again.
A few sessions went on and it was feeling normal and not an issue at all with getting used to the higher bars. I didn’t really expect it to be too hard to adjust to it. However, I did fail somewhere. I told BK that I’d re-learn hop barspins since he has been tossing them like crazy lately and I blew it. I haven’t got there just yet but hopefully once the warmer weather starts hitting Minnesota and I start riding everyday again it will happen… If I stop being a bitch. I also noticed my ice grinds were a little better. I don’t know if this is because of the bars, or if I’ve just been getting lucky lately… but lets just say it was the bars.
Overall, the higher bars did make my hops go up a bit and I felt like I had a little more control. So that’s a bonus. They are one of the bigger bars in BMX these days, unless you account for those big ass 9″ bars that I think were made as a joke, but maybe I’m wrong or just wishing it wasn’t serious. I think the bars are pretty solid and could be something solid for somebody looking for some bigger bars. If they were my signature bars I’d have them 27″ wide and maybe make the box a little smaller, but that’s just something I’ve been looking for myself I guess. I still didn’t mind the geometry on these DK Sigma bars though! I probably would take a spacer out if I were to be running a top load just to prevent from going too high, but that’s also personal preference. So if you like ’em big, you like ’em wide… You should check these out.
