Websites with spot maps and such have come and gone over the years. There’s a new site called ShredTopia.com that is looking to do things right. Here’s a few words about the site…
“INTRODUCING SHREDTOPIA
ShredTopia.com is a user-generated directory of riding spots. Our goal is to create a searchable database of places to ride by giving users the ability to easily search, upload, and rank spots.
WHY WE BUILT THIS SITE
The idea for ShredTopia.com grew out of the frustration with existing “spot websites”. Most cater solely to skaters, are hard to navigate, lack moderation, and don’t require pictures and adequate spot descriptions.
HOW IT WORKS
Anyone can add a spot to ShredTopia.com. Before any spot makes it onto ShredTopia, it is first reviewed by one of our editors to ensure that it has descriptive information, clear photos, and that the spot is not private (i.e. private trails, backyard ramps, etc). ShredTopia addresses people’s concerns about having spots “blown up” by giving them a choice as to how their spot is displayed. Mark your spot as public and everyone can view its location. Mark it secret and the exact location is hidden from all visitors, except yourself.
MONTHLY CONTESTS
When you add a spot to ShredTopia, you are automatically entered into our monthly contest. Every spot added gets you an additional entry into the contest. So, the more spots you add, the greater your chances are of winning. This month’s prizes include a frame of your choice from FBM or The Take, plus a headset and bottom bracket. ShredTopia will also donate $1 (up to $500 per month) for every spot added to a good cause within the BMX community. For the months of June and July we will be donating to the Mike Tag Fund.
WHO RUNS SHREDTOPIA
ShredTopia was built by two riders: Jon Saunders, managing editor, and Thad Allender, founder and creative director. Both are based in Washington, D.C.
THE FUTURE
What you see now is just the beginning. We’ll soon be releasing a mobile version of the site and will be bringing ShredTopia to Canada, Europe and South American countries. ShredTopia will continue to expand geographically and evolve functionally based on user interest.”
