Steven Mack Interview + Video

October 7, 2013

Steven is one of those riders out in California that almost came out of no where when Cult fired up their AM team. I didn’t really know anything about the guy, but over time through the different videos he was putting out, I learned that he was damn good on a bike and could ride anything from park to street and trails. I think his diverse style has really made an impact. With a lot of hype building up for the “$mall Talk” DVD building and recently getting hooked up by Profile, I figured it was due time we get to know just who Steven is. How could we make it even better? How about a brand new edit courtesy of Kings Rideshop to go with this? Watch the video then check out the full interview below!

Name: Steven Mack

Location: Yucca Valley, CA

Sponsors: Cult, Kings Rideshop, Profile Racing

Years riding: 8

What was it that first got you into BMX? Any early memories come to mind?
My older brother and I got BMX bikes for Christmas one year and that’s what got me into riding. We just started building sketchy ramps to jump and I was hooked from there.

You’re one of the guys who have been with Cult since their start. How are things going with them these days? Do you have any trips or anything cool in the works with them?
Things are goin great. We’re heading out on a trip to Texas Toast and doing some filming for $malltalk on the way out there.

How’s your part for the $mall Talk video coming along? I feel like that video is going to really turn some heads from the whole crew.
I’m pretty satisfied with the clips I got, I still have some things I want to get done. It’s my first video part opportunity so I want to show that I can ride everything. Everyone’s be putting in work so I can wait to see the end result.

So you’re getting the hook up from Profile Racing now, right? How did that opportunity all come about? Do you have anything cooking with them as far as trips or anything goes?
I got to meet Matt at Interbike and he planned to come out and ride some spots and just kinda worked out

You have been doing it for King’s Ride Shop in Palm Desert since way before I ever heard your name pop up. How did you ever get hooked up with James and that shop?
Kings was originally in my hometown Yucca Valley and it was the only legit bike shop there so that’s where I would go and chill with all my friends. James would go ride the skatepark after closing and that’s where it started.

Do you have anything cooking with them that you can tell us about? Seems like they always have something rad going on these days.
Yea, we’re going to start filming for a fulll length video which I’m pretty excited for becuase it’s gonna focus on the BMX scene out here. Other than that James is always coming up with ideas and things to do so I’m sure there will be more to come.

Any other sponsor news you can tell us about?
We’ll have to wait and see

So we dropped your new edit with this interview. What’s the story behind that spot you were riding? Is there any sort of story behind the video?
The edit was filmed at my local park, I’m pretty comfortable riding there so nothing took too long. We actually got shut down early because the cops said we needed a permit, haha!

Have you been filming for anything else or are you pretty much trying to save everything for your part in the DVD?
Yeah, I’m just focusing on the Cult video right now.

You have had a few opportunities to do some traveling over the past two years. Where are some of the places you have had the chance to go thanks to BMX?
I’ve been able to go to places I dreamed of going to like Austin, TX Chandler, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT thanks to BMX. Hopefully I get to do more traveling in the future.

Do you have any trips planned you are looking forward to? Aren’t you planning on being at Texas Toast?
Definitely looking forward to goin to Texas Toast because I signed up to compete this year. Last year we took the trip and filmed on the way out there which was a blast.

Where’s one place in the whole world you have always wanted to go, but haven’t had the chance to go yet?
I’d have to say Spain. All of the spots look amazing to ride.

You’re one of those riders who pretty much can crush everything they ride from street to parks and trails. Do you try to keep things mixed up as much as possible or do you go through phases of what you’re into riding?
Thanks man! I rode a lot of everything growing up just to try new things and I had fun no matter what I was riding I was just stoked to be on my bike with my friends.

What would you say your dream spot would be?
My dream spot would be somewhere with a good mix of street, park and dirt.

Do you ever get burned out at all? What are some things you like to do to keep BMX fresh for you?
Not too much, I love to ride as much as possible. I do have the days where I’ll only ride for an hour or so though.

What’s one trick that no matter how many times you have tried, you just can’t do it?
I guess backflips, they scare the shit out of me. I’ve wanted to do one for so long but just can’t commit. It’s just not meant to be, haha.

I can’t imagine it’s too hard to find inspiration with the Cult team all being so close, but who are a few riders that really get you stoked and motivated to ride?
The whole team gets me motivated to ride because everyone has there own way of riding and they’re dudes I’ve looked up to.

Let’s say you could go on a trip anywhere in the world with any 5 riders for a week. Who do you bring, where do you go and why?
The 5 riders would be my friends and it would be to France because the dope trails and the unforgettable times that would be had.

What are you up to when you aren’t riding these days? Do you work, go to school or have any other hobbies you’re into?
I work full time construction on solar fields and like to go off road in my spare time.

What do you think you would be getting into if you never got into BMX?
Most likely doing construction 6 days a week 10 hours a day… hating life, haha.

Let’s say you came up on a million bucks. What’s the first thing you buy?
A house

What’s something about yourself that might surprise people?
I love listening to Metal.

Steven Mack Invert Long

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Riding. That’s all I’m certain of, haha.

What’s the last song you heard, movie you watched and website you visited?
The last song I heard was “Relentless Chaos” by Miss May I, last movie I watched was Grandma’s Boy, website was Cultcrew.com

How can people keep up with you these days? Are you on Instagram, Twitter and all that?
I have the Instagram @stvn_mck_atck and Facebook that’s about it, I don’t think I can handle more, haha!

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Thanks to Robbie and everyone at Cult. James and everyone at Kings. Matt at Profile for all the support
