This week is lined up to be a bit of an unintentional Colony week with Chris’ interview yesterday, Steven’s today, and another that I’ll keep secret till it goes up by the end of the week. Last week, it was announced that Steven was added to Colony’s flow team up in Canada. If you have seen Steven’s riding, then you are well aware of his insane technical abilities that make it way too hard to try and figure out. When the news hit about the new sponsor, I figured it would be more than a good time to catch up with Steven to find out a little bit more about him and what else he has been up to. What was it that first got you into BMX? Any early memories come to mind?
I remember going on a set of roller blades to the brand new local park that got put into my town. After seeing one of the local riders it instantly made me want to do it.
Colony recently picked you up for their flow team. How did that all come about?
The distributor for Colony in Canada, Jagger Co., contacted me and asked me if I would be down and I said hell yes!
Does Clint have anything in the works with you yet? Have you been filming a welcome edit? Will you have clips in the Colony video that’s in the works?
There’s nothing special between Clint and I, yet. I am indeed in the process of a welcome to the team edit and also working on grabbing a few clips for the dvd as well.
What’s up with SourFever these days? Do you guys have anything in the works with that you are psyched on?
Sourfever is what it has always been, just really friends having a good time, but Chris Silva is definitely in the process of making a few changes for the better. You will just have to wait and see.
You have been on the road lately with Micah Kranz and the Division crew. How has that been going for you? What’s the wildest thing you have had happen since you started rolling around with that crew?
The Division BMX dudes are too rad. They are all fun dudes just trying to have a good time. Uh, the craziest thing that happened while with them… We ended up in Missiori at the Canon Lady’s house and let me tell you that place is wild and always an adventure.
Do you have any other sponsor news you are psyched on?
No other sponser stuff right now, but who knows what the future holds.
Since you have been traveling quite a bit lately. Where all have you been? Anywhere you are hoping to get to this summer?
Being on the road with the Division dudes doing shows brought us to a bunch of places (Ohio, Baltimore, Long Island, New jersey, Missouri, Kansas City, etc.) and now I’m in California. I’m definitely hoping to get to England again this year and maybe even a trip to Australia.
There’s no denying that your riding can melt brains. I was losing it in Toronto a few weeks ago watching you ride. Is it all pretty natural talent or have you beat the shit out of yourself learning things like ice to whips out?
To be honest, I can’t stand beating myself up over tricks or to get a trick. I tend not to do that ever and just try and do what feels good and comes mostly natural.
Speaking of contests, are you much of a contest rider or do you just do it if the opportunity arises? Do you plan on hitting any contests this summer?
I do enjoy contests, and would love to get to as many as possible, but not having a license and being from Canada where there isn’t many makes it really hard.
I feel like there isn’t much you can’t do, but what’s one trick you can’t do for the life of you that might surprise people?
I can’t turndown air… ever.
Who are or were some of your biggest influences when it comes to riding?
I have always looked up to guys like Danny Hickerson because of his technical style of riding. Most recently, I have been really into watching anything that Alex Coleborn or Mark Webb come out with because it’s just so technical and that’s what I love.
Let’s say some random millionaire who loves BMX hits you up and says he’s sending you a van and a big budget. You can bring 5 riders, one filmer and one photographer with you on the road for a week and you have to produce some wild edit. Who do you bring, where do you go, and why?
Wow, that’s a new one, haha. The filmier is definitely my buddy, Justen Soule. The photographer… I’d have to say a friend from back home who I always love shooting photos with, Harry Silgren. As for the riders, I’d pick a bunch of friends from back in the area because I feel like we could produce some wild stuff having known and ridden with each other for years.
Do you ever look back and wonder what you would be up to if you didn’t get into BMX? Care to give us a guess of what you would be up to today?
I have thought about it and I always just draw a blank. I cant even imagine life without my bike, ever. It just wouldn’t make sense.
Do you work or go to school at all? What’s the shittiest job you have ever had?
I work for my dad when im home as a labourer for his contracting business. I have never really had a shitty job, I’ve been lucky enough to have been working with my dad for most of my life.
Outside of BMX are you abnormally really good at anything?
I used to play a lot of basketball when I was younger. I guess if you put me up against another BMX rider, I would be a bit better?

You find a large sum of money in a bag on the side of the street. What’s the first thing you buy?
A bottle of Coke to relax and figure out what I’m going to do with the rest.
What’s the last song you heard, movie you watched and website you visited?
The Watcher by Dr.Dre, Blue Harvest – Family Guy and Vital BMX.
You were rocking the rock star hair for quite a while. Who made you cut it? Why would you do something like that?
I cut it myself for cancer patients. I give it away like every 2 years or so. Don’t you worry, it’s making another come back!
If you could be sponsored by any company outside of BMX, who would you pick and why?
Coca-Cola because I drink that shit religiously!
Have you ever had like a close call or some sort of life changing experience that has made you who you are today?
Not that I can recall. I have just been living and loving life for what it is really.
What’s something about yourself that might surprise people?
I don’t think that there is anything that would suprise people. I’m pretty average, haha.

Hopefully I will still be riding and progressing. Hopefully somewhere outside of Canada and not freezing!
