Stevie Churchill Interview

I highly doubt that you have missed the last two Stevie Churchill edits that have dropped the last few weeks. If you have, well you have missed out on a kid who makes 540s, 3 whips, and truck drivers on street look like they are basic tricks. I’ve been interested in finding out more about Stevie, and when Jeff DuPaul gave me a sneak peek a week ago at his Defgrip edit that dropped a few days ago, I knew I had to get an interview with him. Check out what Stevie has to say, some photos courtesy of Nick “C-Beef’ Steben, and a few of his latest edits… Edit: Stevie’s 720 hop clip now online.

Name: Stevie Churchill

Location: Bristol, CT

Sponsors: Volume, Shark Attack, Team Jeff DuPaul, and Dropout

Years riding: 8

What was it that first got you into riding? Any early memories just come to mind?
Jeff Martin got me and one of my brothers into riding.

So the big news is that you got picked up by Volume for their flow team. How did that all come about?
Well, I’m friends with Matty Long who is on Volume and he showed them my edits and talked about me to them, and they were interested.

Do you have any trips or anything planned with them yet? I know they are pretty deep into filming for a new video.
No, not that I know of yet

Speaking of filming, this new TJD X Defgrip edit is ridiculous. Jeff DuPaul told me it only took 3 days of filming to accomplish. Is that your usual riding level or do you tend to go a little harder when the camera is around?
It’s my normal riding its stuff I would want to do with or without the camera just for fun.

Approximately how many girls have tried to touch you since they have seen that banger clip at the end?
Hahaha none so far.

Have you been working on any more edits lately?
No, but I think I’m going to Boston soon to film with Matty.

Word on the street is that you have never left your home state except to ride Rye Airfield once. Can we expect you to start traveling a little bit more now or are you not done terrorizing what’s around you?
Yeah, hopefully I’ll start traveling more.

Is it true you have done a 720 bunny hop on flat ground? I’m going to need that video on Jeff’s phone… right now.
Yeah, it’s true. I was psyched one day while riding and I just tried it and it worked out haha.

What’s so amazing about the plaza down the street from your house that makes you want to ride it everyday?
It’s got some stair sets and lots of ledges and a rail that’s pretty fun, and I get to ride with a bunch of my friends everyday.

I hear you and Jeff Martin are pretty tight. When did he take you under his wing and do you feel like that’s what helps you progress so fast?
Yeah, Jeff and I are like brothers. I’ve known him for 13 years and Jeff’s always teaching me grinds and motivating me to try new things. I love him – no homo haha.

Why do you always land your tricks in one or two goes? What’s one trick that gives you the most trouble?
I don’t know, I ride everyday so that helps me get things quicker. Hop double bars! I get soo close but haven’t landed one yet.

What do you think you would be getting into if you didn’t find BMX?
I would probably skateboard.

What are you usually up to when you aren’t riding?
Watching edits or playing with finger bikes hahahaha.

I’d imagine 16 year old girls eat up guys who can get sick on a bike now days. How many girlfriends do you currently have?
I don’t have any girlfriends, but I do mess around with a few right now haha…

Is it the girly music that you really enjoy that reels them in? List off the last few songs you listened to…
Daylight by Matt and Kim or Walkin on a Dream by Empire of the Sun… stuff like that.

What’s with your clothing choice? I hear you dress like the little kid in the movie Big Daddy? Is the purple pants, sleeveless shirt and a tie the key to three whips down stair sets?
I like to wear skinny jeans and tank tops now. I used to dress like a weirdo haha.

<>I’d imagine you just got your license or are working at it. What kind of wheels do you ride around in or what do you hope to be ripping in?
Well, I don’t care to much about getting my license, but I would like a van or sumthing to travel in.

I heard you have a bit of OCD. What are some things you tend to get caught up on? Do you gotta touch door knobs 12 times and cluck like a chicken before you walk into a room?
Sometimes when I’m nervous about a trick I’ll wipe my hands off 4 times then I grow a pair haha or when I touch something with my right hand I have to touch it with my left hand or it will bother me for the rest of the day.

What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next few years?
Have as much fun as possible and hopefully travel

Who or what are some of your biggest influences on your life?
My family, all my friends, Jeff Martin and biking.

If you could have one super power, what would you choose and why?
I would want to fly so I could fly around on my bike and do huge gaps.

Three reasons why Team Jeff DuPaul has crabs?
Jeff’s asian haha and I can’t think of two others…

Asia – the cause of crabs…?

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Thanks to Volume, Shark Attack, Jeff DuPaul for filming me and being super nice, thanks to Matty Long and Jeff Martin, Dropout and TJD, and thank you mom for dealing with me for all these years.

Anything else you want to say?
Have fun and ride bikes.
