Trey Jones and Mark Mulville in Orlando Edit

January 14, 2013

ESPN BMX‘s Aaron Nardi caught up with Trey Jones and Mark Mulville for a session at the Orlando cement park the other week. You know both of these guys produced some awesome riding for this so hit play!

“I spent the last few weeks of 2012 in the Orlando, Fla. area, riding with the locals and attending jams such as Banned in the Backyard and SPoT Roast. This is where I was able to witness Cult‘s Trey Jones and Subrosa‘s Mark Mullville in their own element. Even away from the jams, on somewhat relaxing days at smaller local parks or riding street, they were impressive.

But to watch them ride at the Orlando Skatepark so effortlessly really gives you the idea of how good they really are. The park might look easy to flow around, until you drop in and realize everything is massive and fairly intimidating. Trey and Mark are both extremely comfortable blasting hips and figuring out tricks and lines no one else has thought of. And this video is a sampling of their skills on home turf.” – Aaron Nardi

Skatepark of Tampa Fourth Annual Roast Jam

January 6, 2013

Here’s another look at what went down at this years SPOT Roast contest. Don’t forget to check out the video we dropped a little while back right here after this one.

“The fourth Annual SPoT Roast went down in late December at the Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT). I hadn’t been to the legendary SPoT in about 12 years, so I was pretty stoked to go back. Profile’s Matt Coplon put together a pretty amazing weekend including a bowl jam, multi-age am and pro park contest, BBQ, and an afterparty at The Bricks in Ybor City. A lot more people showed up than were expected, which wasn’t a problem since the SPoT is designed for huge crowds. With elevated bleachers surrounding the course, an outdoor courtyard, a massive vert ramp, plus a separate building holding the bowl and another street course, there was plenty of room for everyone. Everything ran smooth and the contestants seemed to be pretty happy about the massive amounts of prizes donated by Profile, Shadow, Subrosa and Vans, along with a host of other BMX brands.

SPoT Roast was the first stop of the Florida BMX Skatepark Series Dave Brumlow put together. BMX in Florida is always a good time so check out the other upcoming dates 1/12 Orlando Skatepark, 2/16 Paradise Funplex, 3/16 COA Pro, and 4/13 Kona.

Keeping Up with Ben Hucke

December 10, 2012

ESPN BMX‘s Aaron Nardi caught up with Ben Hucke to find out what’s new and what’s to come for the dude. Sit back and get filled in on things along with some riding clips mixed in for good measure.

“Before the winter arrived in Portland, Ore., Diamond Back pro Ben Hucke traveled to Austin, Texas to ride in the Texas Toast Jam and begin filming for his new web series “Getting Serious.” Unfortunately, Ben wasn’t signed up to ride in the contest, and instead ended up falling down a few times during practice. This parable has little to do with the above video of Ben, but it is pretty indicative of his approach to the BMX pro pursuit — he keeps it mellow and entertaining.

In the above video, Ben sits down to discuss life as a BMX pro heading into 2013. For Ben, that means new sponsors. He recently signed on with Diamond Back, and his signature Nightseeker frame is arriving in stores now. On top of that, he’s working on revamped signature products with The Shadow Conspiracy and Almond Footwear, as well as riding for underwear brands.

Ben’s web series “Getting Serious” is on episode two already, and it’s a good watch. Far from the typical web series, “Getting Serious” tracks Ben’s travels near and far, including a recent trip to Taiwan to check out how his signature frame is made.

Mike Saavedra at Woodward Tahoe

November 28, 2012

Hell yeah! This is awesome.

“As fall was setting in, Deluxe pro Mike Saavedra expressed worry that the trails he built at Woodward Camp’s new Lake Tahoe location wouldn’t last much longer. Tahoe at the end of summer sounded like a perfect weekender to me, so two days later, we were packed and headed out on an 8-hour overnight drive. When we arrived, we were in luck — the trails were in good shape since Mike, his brother, and their crew built them months ago. After a good day of riding went down, we had a little extra time on our hands so we went all over Lake Tahoe — climbing on waterfalls, swimming at the beach, and even a wild night in Reno with Cesar Lopez. All in all, the trip was way too much fun and now we all can’t wait to go back when the snow is good.” Aaron Nardi / ESPN BMX

Inside the Imprint Project

November 15, 2012

Aaron Nardi made a stop by the Imprint Project setup that was in Austin, Texas a few weeks back during the Texas Toast Jam to get the low down on what it is all about and give you a look at some of the photos and photographers that are featured. This was definitely an awesome project and they picked the perfect group of photographers for this.

“Defgrip and Quintin recently came together with five of their favorite BMX photographers to form ‘The Imprint Project.’ The idea behind the project was simple: five esteemed BMX photographers from different parts of the world (Jeff Zielinski in California, Ricky Adam in Leeds, U.K., Walter Pieringer in Austin, Edwin De La Rosa in N.Y. and George Marshall in London, U.K.) were asked to be included in a black and white traveling photo gallery that started in Venice, Calif., ventured to Austin, Texas for the Texas Toast Jam, and will soon continue on to Europe and Japan.

According to Chris Mortenson of Quintin, “Quintin wanted to bring the idea of collaboration to BMX photographers,” and to that end, they’ve created t-shirts and hats featuring photos from The Imprint Project, which are available for purchase on the Quintin site and includes a Ricky Adam shot of Mike Tag at Stockwell skatepark in London.” – Aaron Nardi / ESPN BMX

Diego “Mono” Navarro – Spain Life

November 1, 2012

Aaron Nardi recently made a trip to Spain to meet up with Cult‘s Diego “Mono” Navarro to get to know him better and to stack a ton of damn good clips that you can check out right here. Take a peek!

“I was in the south of Spain for a bit and came across a recent OSS BMX video of an Argentinean rider named Diego “Mono” Navarro. Instantly, I knew I had to do something with him, so I headed to Barcelona and got a hold of Antonio Robles. We headed to the skatepark a few days later and all watched as Mono crushed it. Later that night we met up at midnight, before going into a club at 2 a.m. for an ’80s dance party. Even with a language barrier, hanging out with Mono is always a great experience. I want to thank Mono, Toni, LTW, and the Barcelona locals for making our stay in their city amazing. Music: Fly Moon Royalty “Roxy”” – Aaron Nardi / ESPN BMX
