Here’s a little sneak peek that Division Brand just released giving us a look at their new Citywide Rim they’re currently working on. Not much for details, but they did mention that it is 40mm wide, which is about 4mm to 6mm wider than traditional BMX rims. The Federal Stance XL rim utilizes the same width if you want a better idea of how wide these are. No word on release date yet since these are just samples, but we would imagine some time around Spring? We’ll keep you posted.
Where does time go? Summer has flown by and tomorrow we’ll be hopping on a plane to Las Vegas tomorrow for our 8th round of Interbike to check out all the latest BMX bikes, frames and parts from all of your favorite BMX brands. Thanks to the internet, we’ve been getting previews from a number of brands giving us a taste of what’s to come so we have a decent idea of some of the items we’ll be seeing from a number of the brands. Today we were treated to a gold mine of product that BSD will be displaying between the QBMX booth and Tip Plus suite from their new Westcoaster freecoaster, to the updated frames, new Dan Paley Soulja frame, fresh colorways, their first rim and a new addition that we have a feeling everyone will be running if you have plastic bar ends. Ready? let’s take a look.
There’s no denying that BMX wheels have been getting bigger lately thanks to the larger 2.40″ tire size taking dominance with its benefits of increased traction and ability to take heavy impacts better. With the bigger tires, we have also seen a number of changes in BMX rims which have always been evolving to keep up with the crazier riding that is going on these days. To accommodate for those larger tires and demand for stronger rims, Federal Bikes have released their new Stance XL rim.
The Stance XL rim is made from 6066 aluminum which is 30% stronger than 6061 aluminum found on most rims and features a new contemporary design that utilizes a triple box section, a wide 40mm profile (Traditional rims are around 34mm) and lower 15mm sidewall (20mm is a common height on other rims) height. The wider design helps to maintain tire profile for larger tires and it makes the rim stonger and stiffer overall. Federal have also increased the thickness in the center of the rim by 22% too reduce spokes pulling through. Since the rim is wider, it makes it easier to lace and tighten spokes as well. The overall diameter of the rim is 394mm.
The Stance XL rim is available in matte black and polished silver with a weight of 18.5oz through BMX shops and mail-orders that carry Federal Bikes worldwide now.

The guys over at Eclat have released two new rims to their line up for 2015; the Mercury and Phantom. They have put together an interesting piece over on their website that you can check out RIGHT HERE that explains what makes these rims unique to others currently available and a little depth into just what it took to make them happen. Both rims are available through all shops and mail-orders that carry Eclat now!
Here’s a little something we spotted on The Merged! It looks like Colony is working on a limited edition run of Tom Stretton signature Leopard print rims! Expect more info when they are released!
BMX has been seeing a lot of growth in the wheels department lately. Tires are getting bigger, rims have been getting bigger… Now rims are getting WAY bigger. Head over to The Merged to get a look at the new XXL rim that Stranger is working on. I know this has strength benefits, but all I can think is THIS. Not quite sure what to think. I guess we’ll just have to see it on a bike.
Thinking it’s time for some new rims but you want some flavor? Subrosa have just released their Turbo rim in this red and black fade color. This 36-hole heat-treated 6061-T6 alloy rim with a welded seam is double walled with 3 internal chambers, is 34mm’s wide with an extra thick spoke area for increased strength and weighs in at 17 oz even. If you aren’t feeling the black and red fade, the Turbo rim comes in colors of black, 69 karat gold and polished as well.

Let’s face it, there are A LOT of options for BMX parts these days. You can go into trying to pick something out and end up confused and unsure because there are so many options that all have a similar look or materials that might all sound like good options. What a lot of people don’t realize is that there are a lot of factors beyond size, color and weight that can be a determining factor for something when it comes down to comparing two, three or four different brands products that all appear to be similar.
When it comes down to picking out a new rim or wheel for your bike, what are some of the factors that come to mind? Color, weight, style of hub or rim might be some of the things that come to mind right off the bat. What about things like the number of walls? How about the width or height of the rim? Do you consider a welded seam versus a pinned seam? How about the stance width of the spokes? Believe it or not there are A LOT of things you can do to a rim that will improve it.
When it came time to create a new, stronger rim for The Shadow Conspiracy, they started out with what they knew worked and improved on it! After months of testing and trying new ideas, they finally found a winning design they were proud to release as their new Corvus rim.
