Since Darren Bouldin’s 17th Birthday he has been putting on bike jams. What started out as a small get together with some backyard ramps and just a handful of friends has grown over the years into becoming one of the biggest and most anticipated celebrations in North Carolina. With riders from all over the state and country coming to share in what is possibly the best birthday gift anyone could ever receive. This year Darren and some of the area locals really wanted to step it up from last year’s gathering and within a few weekends they built an entirely new hip line which everyone couldn’t stop talking about afterwards. You see the DB Gold Rush at GMG Trails was not just another Jam or birthday party, for most it was a family reunion and a chance to spend some quality time with the friends and people you care about. Darren has the kind of intoxicating personality that no matter who you are or where you’re from you are immediately drawn towards him. His positive outlook on life and uncanny ability to smile even when his chips are down is like a breathe of fresh air. He is easily one of the nicest and most genuine people I know and I’m grateful to call him friend. I just hope we get to have another 8 years of these in our future. Over the weekend, some rumors that Profile Racing and Madera were being sold by Wal-Mart had been popping up. Profile wanted to make it VERY clear that they are NOT and that it’s small shops and online retailers that are selling through them and that they will trying to discontinue this as soon as possible. “That is correct. PROFILE RACING IS NOT SOLD BY WAL-MART*. But, other IBDs (Independent Bike Dealers) like BikeWagon have affiliated their stores with Wal-Mart. Why? Read below… It’s all about 3P retailing or third party retailing and it’s growing quickly in the bicycle industry. The big players are Amazon, eBay, Sears and now Wal-Mart.
You can think of 3P as the classified ads of the Internet. 3P sites have been developed to connect sellers with buyers in an electronic marketplace that is provided by the 3P. The idea is that bike shops use 3P marketplaces to reach more customers. The 3Ps charge retailers a monthly subscription fee plus a commission for each item sold on their web site. The fee is for the use of their web site and transaction services. Essentially, in 3Ps the bike shop or retailer is renting space on a different web site.
Currently, Amazon and eBay are the most well-known 3P markets. Amazon is easily the biggest, but eBay is continuing to aggressively chase them. Now Wal-Mart has entered the race as well, but their website makes it look like they’re selling the merchandise. Other 3P sites to be aware of are Newegg.com, Sears.com and Rakuten.com.
So, when you see Profile cranks being “advertised” on Wal-Mart’s 3P site, it’s not Profile. Look closely and you’ll see a name like BikeWagon, the bike shop in Salt Lake City, selling our cranks. So, when you see this, don’t think that Wal-Mart is selling our products. They aren’t. And, please spread the word when someone tells you that Profile is now sold at Wal-Mart. It just ain’t true.

Profile Racing dropped a little teaser for their new free coaster they are working on today. This very quick video featuring their flatland rider, Tyler Gilliard, doesn’t give away a TON but the hub must be getting close if they’re willing to build some hype for it. Take a peek!
