If you keep up with the East Coast scene, or really the Deadline, The Trip or Fiend guys, there’s a good chance you have seen Chris Marshall’s name in a photo credit or ten. Chris is one of the guys that riders like Garrett Reynolds, Ty Morrow and Augie Simoncini trust to get the photo when it counts.
We’ve been seeing his name pop up pretty much everywhere between all of the magazines and different websites and figured it was more than time to get ahold of this guy and find out what he’s all about. Through The Lens: Creative Minds – Working Freelance Vs. Daily Grind

This month I hit the two-year mark as a freelance photographer after almost five years straight of working for a magazine full-time, as a salaried photographer/assistant editor and it’s been one hell of a ride so far. I seem to always have this discussion with people and it’s interesting to hear everyone’s varying opinions on the subject of freelance vs. the daily grind. This very column is one of the best parts of working for myself and has been since TTL number one. Now for those of you out there working a 9-5 I have nothing against that lifestyle. If it’s paying the bills and helping you maintain your current situation then I say go for it. There is something about creating that I am addicted to. Whether it’s shooting a photograph, or writing a 4,000-word story I seem to have the need to constantly be working and moving forward. I decided to take a little bit of time and reflect on the differences between the two, and the ups and downs of both since I feel at this point I have seen from both perspectives.

Through The Lens: Naming Your Price

This week’s feature is all about naming your price, getting work and selling your photos. It’s one of those unspoken things within the photography industry. In my honest opinion it would actually be better if people talk a little more about it. As a freelance photographer I’ve officially been on my own, paying my way with what I make off of individual projects. After looking at my “2013 Invoice” folder it looks like I am at 45 projects for the year so far. If you think about it, that’s almost a project a week and the reason I even mention that is to give you an idea of how many times I have had to name a price for my work. As always, and as I have said from day one with this column, this is just my opinion, and you can take it for what it’s worth. I work very hard at what I do and strive to do more, create more, and work more every single year. The last post that I did related to selling photos was back in June of 2012, which you can check out here. I have been asked a lot over the years how to go about pricing photos, selling work, and negotiating with companies so I wanted to give an update on all of that and go a little more in depth about it.

Through The Lens: Soul Stealer

Today’s column is all about a single photograph that I shot a few months ago. It is crazy to think that a single photograph could have so much of a story to tell and that is one thing about the still image that will never go away. No matter how technically advanced we get as a society, even if they try to pull stills from Red Camera video and use them as “photographs” that’s fine. I’m good as long as no one ever tries to call a video still a photo because it’s not. Shooting with film has an entirely feel to it compared to digital. Although as a photographer I think in detail about every shot that I take whether it’s film or digital, I still seem to spend a little bit of extra time to compose and dial in my photo when I’m shooting film. Not only that but film just has an entirely different look to it and that is part of the reason why I love it so much. You can’t re-create the look of film with a digital camera; it’s just not the same. Sure, they have apps, and plug-ins and preset filters that try to mimic certain styles of film but at the end of the day, it’s just not the same. There is also an old legend that photographing people on film steals a piece of their soul and a little part of me, as weird as it may seem, believes that. Through The Lens: Being a Professional Photographer in 2013

Well, this week is a little different than most. This week is all about what it takes to be a current day photographer in today’s society. I have been working as a photographer on many different levels and in many different aspects for almost a decade now and figured that I would offer some insight to anyone looking to do the same. Find out what works, what doesn’t work, and anything else that I think might help you out along the way while I write this up. If you haven’t noticed, the column has been the place to come for original interviews, photo how-tos, and basically anything that I think might help aspiring photographers find their path. It’s been an interesting place for me to do just that. I’ve honestly learned so much about myself, as well as my personal photography since the first column and continue to do so week after week. Let’s see how this one goes.

Through The Lens: Film Versus Digital

For this week I wanted to do a feature on the film vs. digital debate. The battle began back in 1994 when digital photography was introduced on a consumer level and has been a topic of discussion between photographers for years now. When I started out as a photographer the only thing that I shot was film. It’s been well over a decade and I still shoot film, but in a very personal way. I don’t typically shoot film for my regular workflow but I try to mix it up when I have the chance to, especially while I am traveling in a new place. It’s all a personal choice and you like what you like but it is nice to know that film is here to stay for the long haul. There are too many people that enjoy film photography too much to get rid of it. The die-hards will do whatever it takes to keep the medium alive and I want to help contribute to that movement. I decided to breakdown a few things and speak my mind for a bit on the topic so, enjoy. This is one of those columns topics that I can’t believe I haven’t written about yet after all of this time and what better time to start than now?

In today’s world having a cell phone is the norm and a huge majority of smart phones actually have a pretty decent camera on them. I can say personally that the “camera” that I carry most happens to be my iPhone. I always have it on me everywhere I go and I happen to shoot quite a bit with it. I never really do anything with any of the photos from my phone and the other day I was reminded of the saying “The best camera is the one you have on you.” To me, as a photographer that makes perfect sense. It’s one of those things where you don’t think; you just shoot. For example, if I’m out and don’t happen to have an actual camera on me, my first instinct is to grab my phone and capture the moment without focusing too much on the end result. That is what photography is all about. It’s about living in the moment, it’s about capturing what’s in front of you and it’s about taking advantage of your surroundings.
