Red Bull – Raditudes: Crashing Drones and Winning Contests

August 20, 2014

These Raditudes episodes from Red Bull have been awesome. This time around we get a little look into Hucker’s newest hobby that he likes to push to the limits and then hop over to the U.K for the Goodwood Festival with Anthony Napolitan! Enjoy!

“Hucker and Anthony hit up some Southern California trails and enjoy the spoils of SoCal weather. Then, Hucker puts his exceptional quadcopter (drone) piloting skills to action, and nearly beheads videographer Ryan Navazio.

Later on, Anthony heads to England for the Goodwood Festival of Speed as he rides with Sebastian Keep, Chris Doyle, Kye Forte, and Matt Priest as he takes home the win for best trick and delivers the coveted Red Bull Helmet to MTB rider Mike Jones.”

Mutiny – Philadelphia

August 15, 2014

Here’s one we’ve been waiting to see and damn did it turn out amazing! Check out the Mutiny Bikes crew getting down on the streets of Philly! As expected, these guys produced some serious clips and the filming and editing is so good. It’s also good to see some fresh Justin Simpson footage! It’s such a bummer hearing about Seth Stellfox being taken from this world shortly after this video was filmed… Rest in Peace, Seth!

“When we were planning trips we asked everyone if they had any idea of where they wanted to go, nearly everyone had mentioned Philadelphia so in early June we took Bedford, Castelluzzo, Houck, Simpson, and Wescott there to film and shoot an article with Walter Pierringer for Ride UK. When we were deciding who was going to film the project it was a no brainer. We knew that Navaz was a local and obviously one of the best filmers in the game. Acting as tour guide and filmer he went above and beyond and helped us navigate our way through the streets of the City of brotherly love. During our stay we got to meet a bunch of awesome people including Seth Stellfox. He was a Philadelphia Police officer as well as a BMX rider who made sure we were safe while we were riding in some fairly dangerous neighborhoods. I just received the news that Seth has passed away, because he was so vital in the making of this video we wanted to dedicate it to him. Rest In Peace Seth.

“Insight” Chester Blacksmith

July 1, 2014

Ride BMX dropped Chester Blacksmith’s wild section from the “Insight” DVD from a few years back online for your viewing pleasure! Hit that play button and enjoy!

“The circumstances for Chester to have a part in the video seemed perfect. Dean Dickinson was living in Southern California and going to college when I was coming up with the lineup for Insight. At the time, part of Dean’s college requirement was to do an internship, so he worked with me on the video for college credit. Dean and Chester were good friends and Chester ended up coming down to California to ride with Dean. Prior to this I hadn’t met Chester but I was familiar with his riding. After seeing a few clips they had filmed on Chet’s trip to Cali, I suggested he have a part in the video and Dean would handle the majority of the filming.

Unfortunately, while filming with Dean in Portland, Chester crashed and suffered a compound fracture in his leg. To this day, I’ve only watched the leg break footage a handful of times because it’s so brutal. Fortunately, prior to the injury Chester had some great footage clocked with Dean and Shad Johnson. He was able to put together a solid part with some of the wildest clips in the video, despite getting hardly any time to film. Chet’s words in the video are very sincere and I think he sums up the negative aspects that can come along with filming a video part perfectly.” —Ryan Navazio

“Insight” Intro & Dakota Roche Section

June 24, 2014

Ride BMX just uploaded the intro and Dakota Roche’s banger of a section from their 2008 DVD “Insight” for your viewing pleasure. Needless to say, this is a phenomenal video part that you won’t want to miss. After you check that out, go check out a Q&A with Dakota about the part right here!

“Ride BMX’s 2008 DVD, Insight…

“Each person deals with their own battles when filming a video part. With Insight, I wanted to use the video to convey that idea. I wanted the audience to be able to connect with a rider by seeing something they could relate to other than just tricks.

When it was first confirmed that I’d gotten the opportunity to make this video, the first person I had in mind to have a video part was Dakota Roche. At the time when we started filming it was obvious to me that Dak was going to do big things in BMX. It just so happened that he also lived a few blocks away from where I was staying at the time (renting a room from Todd Lyons).

Dak and I shared a similar passion for videos and he was a huge motivator during the whole process. The one thing that stands out the most years later is his enthusiasm for the project. He’d show up early at my place to wake me up to go film or call me when I was out of town to tell me about a spot he had in mind. He also owned a vx2000 and was always down to help shoot and drive people around in his creepy white work van. I’m pretty sure his part ender was filmed on Thanksgiving Day.“” —Ryan Navazio

Nike BMX – Baton Rouge

June 20, 2013

The video we’ve been waiting for the last week or so… The Nike BMX team trip to Baton Rouge video! Do I really need to say this is absolutely INSANE and a MUST SEE? Because… I’m going to slap you if you haven’t hit play yet…

“Garrett Reynolds, Chad Kerley, Dennis Enarson, Nigel Sylvester and Simone Barraco handled the streets of Baton Rouge for three days, and came back with some incredible footage. Is three days in a city long enough? With this crew it sure is! Filmed and edited by Ryan Navazio”

Left/Right was released in March 2007. It was an interesting time to be releasing a DVD because web videos were just starting to become more common and thecomeup was gaining more momentum. People were just starting to use HD cameras to film BMX, and even at that time I can remember being told that DVD’s were dying and it wasn’t likely that I would sell very many copies. I wasn’t necessarily as interested in selling tons of copies as I was in using the video to promote both the riders and my work. For me the goal was to make back what I spent and essentially make a name for myself so that I could hopefully continue to make BMX videos full time. It was promoted almost entirely by word of mouth, and with a few good reviews in magazines. It actually ended up doing pretty well with help from S&M distributing it on the west coast and Animal on the east coast.
A few people have asked the significance of the name Left/Right. Prior to Left/Right, Standpoint was a video magazine and each issue was numbered up to issue 6. Left/Right initially started out as Standpoint 7 but I wanted to move away from the video magazine side of things because releasing “issues” by number seemed to devalue the videos. Finding a proper name for the video would help ensure that it had a longer shelf life. I wanted a name that was descriptive of the content in the video and spent several months deliberating what the final title would be (I had a list of about 5 or 10 different titles that I wish I could find because I don’t remember what they were anymore). Half of the video was filmed on the west coast representing the “left” and the other half on the east coast representing the “right”. A vague but simple title that worked perfectly.
A good portion of the project was financed through the sale of clips I had filmed over the years to a company in California that made segments for an on demand cable network. At one point, before going on Red Bull’s Mean Streets, I was basically out of money . I didn’t have enough to even cover rent the following month before leaving for that trip. I ended up on a team with Gary Young and Morgan Wade, and as luck would have it, our team won that contest. Those guys split the winnings with me and that helped finance the rest of the project and kept me afloat. I seriously can’t thank Gary and Morgan enough for splitting that cash with me. I shot the intro to the video video on a Bolex using 16mm film purchased with my old student ID at Kodak in Hollywood. By the time I was ready to get the film processed and transferred (the final step before editing) I paid for it by selling an old VX1000 to Larry Alvarado. The same VX1000 was used to film Criminal Mischief, which was given to me in trade for working on the Little Devil DVD. The MK1 fisheye (used throughout the video) was also used in the making of Criminal Mischief.
All of the DVD artwork and animation in the video was created by Sean Curran aka Whiteboy. Whiteboy designed the famous Animal griffin head logo and was Animal’s lead parts designer at the time. He designed all of the packaging and graphics for the previous Standpoint videos and Left/Right was his first venture into animation using After Effects. The cover photo was shot and donated by Ride US photographer Jeff Zielinski. Dean Dickinson was one of the only other videographers to contribute footage. On the east coast, the video premiered at Van Homan’s now defunct two by four store in Pennsville, NJ and out west at 9 star in Mission Viejo, Ca (Kurt Rasmussen’s hometown).
Over the years I’ve had some of the most talented riders (and some of my favorite riders) in the world tell me this is one of their all time favorite videos. Hearing that has motivated me to try and get people to see it, either for the first time or to revisit. Most of this video has remained absent from the internet until now. There was a google video version with out of sync audio up for a few years but google video is no more. I’ve also mastered the compression settings to a point where I’m happy with the quality. So this is the first official release of Left/Right online. Enjoy!
