Well… this isn’t something you see all too often. I have mad respect for Jamie, but I feel like his recent distractions with commentating and everything may have taken away from his focus. Maybe it was just an off weekend. I don’t know. All I know is Steven McCann won this weekend and that seems weird.
“Salt Lake City, Utah – Sept. 11, 2011 – Steven McCann pulled an upset win over Jamie Bestwick in today’s BMX Vert Finals. McCann landed a triple tailwhip into a flair to a no-handed 900 in a solid Super Final run to edge out Bestwick, who has won every BMX vert Dew Cup in the Tour’s seven year history. In a Super Final that saw only a four point difference between first and fifth place, McCann’s score of 92.38 was just enough to beat Bestwick’s 92.25. Vince Byron came in third with a score of 91.38.
“Everybody puts on a great performance when you get into the mindset of the finals,” said McCann of the stiff competition during the final. “We all know what we’re capable of and sometimes you just need to believe in yourself. That’s what these sports are about – going out there and putting together a run you’re happy with.” This marks McCann’s first BMX vert win on the Dew Tour and puts him in second place behind Jamie Bestwick in the overall standings. Next month’s Dew Tour Championships will see Bestwick and McCann fighting it out for the top spot on the podium and overall Dew Cup. “Make sure you guys get to Vegas,” said McCann. “It’s going to be a party, that’s for sure – party on the vert ramp!”
The four-day competition featuring skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross, is the third of four events on the 2011 Dew Tour. Over the four days, 62,273 fans experienced the Dew Tour at Salt Lake City’s EnergySolutions Arena. The Tour will conclude with the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, October 13-16, where the best athletes in action sports will vie for the coveted Dew Cup in skate street and vert and BMX park, dirt and vert.
