After a little over two years, the Colony video featuring Mick Bayzand, Alex Hiam, Liam Zingbergs, Brock Olive, Clint Millar, Pete Radivo, Broc Raiford, Paddy Gross, Bruno Faucon, Peta Shepherd, Simon O’Brien, Shane Badman, Attila Godi, Steven Moxley, Cooper Brownlee, Ryan Guettler, Chris Courtenay, Marnold, Tom Stretton and Zac Miner is finally done and available soon. I figured it would be a real good time to catch up with the man behind the filming and editing, Stewart Munro, to find out what it took to take on this project. Let’s take a look at what he has to say… after you check out the trailer that dropped today above!

You have been in charge of the filming and editing for Colony’s somewhat secret full-length video that’s just getting wrapped up. When did the original idea for the project start?
Well, I had just fished editing 3 Colony road trip web video’s and I went to the Colony warehouse to drop them off to Clint and he seemed really stoked on how they turned out and asked me if I wanted to make the DVD. I was stoked!
What is the general idea for the direction of the video? Was it all based around trips, or going out with each rider to see what their local spots had to offer?
Both – I would go out with all the Brisbane team riders on weekends and weekdays to film them at their spots and we did a lot of filming trips as well.
Where all did you go to film for the video? Didn’t you guys make a trip to the U.S and a few other places along the way?
We went on filming trips to Spain, France, USA, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Perth, Melbourne & Adelaide.
Out of all of the places you guys went, what do you think the best trip was? Any reason why?
I really loved the trip to Perth because I had never been there before and all the local’s were so cool and showed us around. The trip to the USA was really good too.
Who all has full sections in the video? Were there any of the guys you wish could have produced a full section but couldn’t due to injuries and what not?
Alex Hiam, Chris Courtenay, Cooper Brownlee, Mick Bayzand, Ryan Guettler, Zac Miner, Marnold and Tom Stretton all have full parts. Some of the riders had some really bad luck filming for the DVD – Clint ripped his foot off his leg while riding street in LA. Chris blew out his knee and broke his wrist. Alex broke his leg. Ryan had a really bad time with double shoulder surgery & then breaking his collar bone. Bayzand and Zac got hurt a lot too. Zac even had a crazy spider bite infection that took him out for a month or so.
Outside of the full sections, how many mixes and random sections are there in the video? Will it come with any bonus sections?
Liam Zingbergs and Brock Olive have a split part as well as Clint Millar and Pete Radivo. There is one mixed part. Yes, it comes with a lot of bonus videos.
Did you handle all of the filming and editing or did Cooper Brownlee and others help out?
I edited the DVD and Cooper and I worked together filming when we were on trips. A lot of the time team riders would help out filming too. We also had Ryan Navazio help out as a special guest filmer on our LA trip. That was really good to see him work & hang out as well.
I’d imagine in the time it took to make the video, you guys had some crazy things happen. Do you have any good stories from crazy nights, homeless people losing it, cops and security or anything like that?
There were so many crazy things that happen so I will just do a quick list of some things that stand out to me. Zac Miner got married in Vegas. A junkie tried to steal some of the bikes and camera gear when we were in LA. Clint ripped his foot off his leg. Cooper getting his bike taking from him by the cops in Spain. Mick winning a comp in France and they gave him goats cheese and leg of ham. Watching Mick do the biggest rail I have ever seen done in person.
Out of all of the sections, whose section is your favorite and why? Yes, you have to pick one.
Tom Stretton part is my favourite part of the whole DVD because he’s doing tricks that I have never seen done by anyone. The whole flow of his riding and the song just worked perfect.
Who put in the most work for their section?
This is a hard one as I feel all the guys did a great job!
How many tapes/memory cards and hard drives did you fill up while making this?
I have one hard drive with two terabytes of footage on it.
What kind of camera setup are you working with these days? What did you do the editing on?
I have Canon 5D,Panasonic AG-HPX170, Krasnogorsk-3 Super 16mm camera, and a Canon 1014 XL-S super 8mm, Eazy dolly, Easy Handy, a glidecam 400 pro and a Manfoto 501 tripod. I edited the DVD on FCP
If you could, would you go back and redo any shots or anything that maybe didn’t go as well as you had hoped?
I think when it comes to filming street you sometimes only get one shot at it. So I think you have to take what you get most of the time. I would have liked to film Ryan Guettler a lot more but with him been hurt and living in the US makes things hard.
Now the video is done and off to the duplicators. When can we expect to see the video at the shops? Any idea of the price of the video yet?
It will premiere here in Australia on July 16th & be available after that. It will also be available in the USA at that time & will retail for $9.99.
Will there be any trailers hitting the Internet here soon?
I am working on a trailer right now and will be online by the time you read this. (see above or below!)
Start to finish, how long did this video take to get from idea to duplicators?
2 Years all up.
What should we expect from the video? Why do you think people will want to see this one?
I am not going to give anything away! All I can say is everyone worked so hard on this DVD to make it what it is. I think people will want to see this DVD because this is the first full-length legit team DVD from Colony.
Is there anything I missed that you want to add?
I want to thank Clint Millar for giving me the job of making the DVD. Cooper for all his help, I want to thank all the team and anyone who has helps us in anyway when making this DVD. Thanks to you Kurt for the interview.
