We’re less than 6 weeks away from winter being done up here in the Northern Hemisphere if that Groundhog isn’t completely full of shit. So it’s getting to be a good time to get that bike of yours all dialed in for the spring sessions that will be hitting hard before you know it. For this weeks Products: column, were’ going to take a closer look at the Trey Jones signature Stone Cold bars from Cult, the new Military green colorway from Profile Racing, the Sinner XLT complete from Stolen Bikes, the Bitchin’ cranks from Subrosa and then we’ll wrap things up with the Interlock V2 chain from The Shadow Conspiracy! Photogallery: Zachary Honahan
We’ve featured a lot of photo galleries over the past few years. In that time, we’ve been able to feature a lot of photographers, who prior to being featured on the site, had not been featured anywhere else. We’ve seen some of those guys move on and progress and become well known photographers in the BMX world and some have moved on to bigger and better things outside of BMX.
The other day, we received a sampling of photos from an up and comer from the east coast that we had never heard of. That photographer is 17-year old Zachary Honahan. The photos were solid and we saw a lot of potential in his work, so we decided it would be a good opportunity to introduce you all to Zach with 15 of his photos in a brand new photogallery featuring a few well known guys like Billy Perry and Adam LZ along with a few new names like Justin Johnson, Jake Layton and Anthony Zuber. Check it out!
Through The Lens: Six Reasons To Shoot Film
For this week I wanted to do a bit of a follow-up piece to the “Film vs. Digital” feature TTL #99. Although I mentioned many of the benefits of shooting film I figured I would give a little more detail on each. I started out shooting photographs and gaining an interest in photography well before the DSLR burst out onto the scene. I have and always will have a passion for analog photography and even though I constantly mention that my main workflow is about 99% digital I still try to shoot a bunch of film along the way. For instance when I travel to a different state for a commercial project, I will always bring along a couple of film cameras for the ride as well. There is no better feeling than exploring a new city, town or anywhere for that matter with a film camera in hand. I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with digital in comparison; I’m just expressing the love that I have for film. Check it!

Through The Lens: Out with the Old, In with the New
Well, the time has finally come. I have been wanting to get a new camera body for years now and haven’t really been too sold on everything that has come out. Not only that but if you didn’t realize, being a professional photographer comes at a huge expense. If you are going to fully invest, prepare to spend some money. I have spent around $10,000 over the years since I first started getting my work published a decade ago and its just part of the game. Between camera bodies, lenses, strobes, light modifiers, computer equipment and more, it adds up at an almost alarming rate. But, on the bright side, if you are going to invest, hopefully you are on the track to being paid and recouping the cost of your initial investments. Also, don’t let those figures scare you away. There is much more to being a professional photographer than an expensive array of camera shit. “It’s the magician, not the wand” which simply means that it doesn’t matter how much your gear costs as long as you know what you’re doing. On that note, for this week I decided to do a little comparing between my Canon Mark II N and my new Canon 6D.
Insight: Shadow Conspiracy – Corvus Rim
Let’s face it, there are A LOT of options for BMX parts these days. You can go into trying to pick something out and end up confused and unsure because there are so many options that all have a similar look or materials that might all sound like good options. What a lot of people don’t realize is that there are a lot of factors beyond size, color and weight that can be a determining factor for something when it comes down to comparing two, three or four different brands products that all appear to be similar.
When it comes down to picking out a new rim or wheel for your bike, what are some of the factors that come to mind? Color, weight, style of hub or rim might be some of the things that come to mind right off the bat. What about things like the number of walls? How about the width or height of the rim? Do you consider a welded seam versus a pinned seam? How about the stance width of the spokes? Believe it or not there are A LOT of things you can do to a rim that will improve it.
When it came time to create a new, stronger rim for The Shadow Conspiracy, they started out with what they knew worked and improved on it! After months of testing and trying new ideas, they finally found a winning design they were proud to release as their new Corvus rim.
Want to know what makes this rim unique? Keep reading!
