Through The Lens: Story Time with Matt Beringer

February 20, 2013

TTL_53_opener_600x

Whenever it comes time to put together an article for print you typically end up with more photos and copy than you can use. Sometimes certain parts of articles just have to get fully cut out due to space limitations. So, for example, the following story that you are going to read written by none other than Matt Beringer was originally set to go into an upcoming interview in Soul Magazine about Matt’s yard. There was a small problem though and that was the fact that he wrote nearly 1,000 words in response to a single question in regards to the water slides in the yard and how he got them. Now, if you know anything about print, you would know that 1,000 words are way too many words for one answer. I immediately took the answer and saved it as “Beringer Bonus” and had a plan to use it at one point for a future project simply because it’s an awesome story that I felt was definitely worth sharing. When I was out in Utah staying with Matt for a week working on a few different things we ended up spending a lot of time just shooting the shit and talking over some beers. He has so many awesome stories and they are always entertaining so I decided that instead of having this never see the light of day I would share it with the world. Welcome to the first edition of “Story Time” with S&M lifer and legend Matt Beringer.

BMX BMX

Turns out I was a little off with the roman numeral system for the past few editions, my bad. I’m terrible with math… and apparently ancient counting systems, haha. EITHER WAY… For the 44th edition of Products, we’re taking a closer look at the Cult Deathrow frame, Eclat‘s Dynamic front hub, Deluxe‘s new “Trust In Dirt” trucker hats, Madera‘s Unity front load stem and Diamondback UK‘s Remix complete bike! Let’s get into this!

Through The Lens – Company Check: Odyssey

February 13, 2013

BMX BMX

Odyssey was started in 1985 so to say that they have a history in BMX is quite the understatement. They have created multiple innovative products, they have won design awards, they have continued to make products that have helped BMX progress to the level it is at today. Not only that but they have also put together an amazing team both pro and flow and they continue to set trends while the average company tries to keep up. Odyssey as a whole seems to be doing something right these days and it’s a company that has the respect of its fellow peers. They give back to BMX in the form of quality, trust-worthy parts and help support riding by putting on one of the best contests to date otherwise known as the Texas Toast Jam. I recently got the chance to head down to the main offices/warehouse in Norwalk, California and spend the afternoon hanging with Jim Bauer. Grab a drink, get comfortable and find out why Odyssey is one of the leading companies in all of BMX.

Insight: The Shadow Conspiracy Coffin Build

February 7, 2013

Shadow Conspiracy Coffin

I’m not really sure when the first Shadow Conspiracy coffin happened. I remember about a year or two ago they started popping up at a bunch of different events that Shadow was sponsoring. In that time, this unique ledge has popped up in countries all over the world and I think it has crossed everyones mind that they would have a good time riding it in some way.
Then a month or so ago, I was talking to Ronnie Bonner about the annual BV Jam that I’ve been throwing the past few years. Shadow was sponsoring it, and if you have ever met Ronnie, he’s always got some good ideas to step things up a notch or two to really make something that much better.
We started talking about the coffins and how Shadow has been getting a bunch of requests from people for the instructions and dimensions of how to build one. I tossed out that I wanted to get one made for the jam. When I said that, Ronnie said they were working on putting together some sort of instructions for it, but only had some rough plans to work with at the time.
Over the years, I’ve become pretty good at figuring out how to make things work with minimal resources. It’s kind of something I think you develop over time as a BMX rider. I usually get pretty overwhelmed when everything is already figured out and everything is supplied. It kind of takes the fun out of it and makes it easier to screw up.
I had Ronnie send through these rough plans and got to work with Adam and Blake Waters from Bluff Valley to take this idea from rough plans and wood to a good time. I documented the creation from start to finish with some photos from Instagram (@KurtHohberger), emails and what not. I figured I’d give you guys a look at the process to make this happen from start to finish. Let’s take a peek.

Through The Lens: How To Shoot a Bike Check Featuring Andrew Jackson

February 6, 2013

Andrew Jackson BMX

For this week I had a few things in mind that I wanted to work on but when I was out shooting the other day Andrew Jackson showed up with a freshly built set up and he wanted to try and get it shot before he really started riding it. Since we were going to be doing a bike check anyways I figured it would be cool to break down the process of shooting a bike check and how I typically go about it. Bike checks are a perfect way to show everyone out there what you are riding and it’s a great way for pros to shout out their signature parts and help promote the companies that support them. Plus, it’s a great marketing tool for companies to have their products promoted by their team riders so it’s a win-win for everyone really. Although a bike check seems really simple there are actually a few important things to know when putting one together. Read on to get a little insight into what it takes to get one done properly and practice on your own bike or your friend’s bike today.

BV Jam 2013 – Mini Jams Video + Photogallery

January 31, 2013

All right, so here we have it. The 2nd video from the BV Jam from Blake Waters! This video ended up being a pretty quick recap of the chaos that ensued after the contest. Basically, after making all the kids be patient for 6 hours during the contest, by the time the word “free stuff” popped up, kids started losing their minds. So we tried our best to to get the Shadow Conspiracy Coffin Jam, S&M longest skid and Fit biggest air taken care of. After that, we just decided to make it hail free product for all the kids sticking around. It was a heavy storm that left a lot of people stoked.

Shout out to all of the sponsors who made this possible, all of the people who made it out for the day and everyone for checking this out. Next year is already getting worked on and all I can say is it’s going to get real interesting, haha.

Don’t forget you check out the video from the Expert and Pro classes here.

I have uploaded 75 photos that I shot throughout the day for you to check out as well! I’ve uploaded the photos to our Facebook Page to make it a little easier to view if the photogallery below is a little much for you!
