Red Bull Trick Or Treat Results + Photos
“New York, NY – October 28, 2011 – To kick off Halloween weekend in style, 32 BMX bikers donned costumes and showed off their best moves at the Red Bull Trick or Treat contest. For the third time in four years, some of the best hit a creative course that featured Halloween-themed obstacles from a curved grim reaper rail box to tricked-out coffins. This year’s “Live or Die” new format featured heats of six riders, where only the top two riders advanced. The top finalists proved to be a mash-up of big contest strength, like that of a professional, an amateur and a youngin.
Newtown Barge Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn held the attention of over 500 fans as temperatures dipped into the low 40s. With midtown Manhattan in the background, top honors went to Jackson, New Jersey native Scotty Cranmer, who was recently crowned Dew Tour overall champion, and second to the Bronx’s Pablo Nunez, whose first contest ever was Red Bull Trick or Treat and Sean Ricany, who’s sixteen years was enough to compete against the big dogs. Best trick honors went to Zac Costa, whose footjam nosepick on the RIP quarter was the night’s best.
While bikes were flying and wheels were turning, Ricany’s manual to nose wheelie to barspin and his no handed flip jam nosepick on the sub box made the judges mind melt. Nunez didn’t let his new nickname of “honeybadger” by the MC slow him down a bit. His 360 tailwhip drops over the hip set the crowd roaring. Scott Cranmer came ready to ride with his Danny Zuko wig and Grease Lighting jacket. His multiple fufano moves on the judges tower and tail whip drop from the sub box with the East River in the background were what BMX dreams are made of.
“It’s an amazing honor to ride well here and I appreciate getting to participate as a semi-local since I’m from New Jersey,” says Cranmer, Red Bull Trick or Treat’s 2010 and 2011 champion. “It’s not just another contest. Getting dressed up loosens the mood and helps get people excited about BMX.”
The event brought out many more local riders because of a last minute date change due to weather. Yet all types of riders were represented, from local hero and professional Edwin De La Rosa who helped conceive the contest, to last year’s top competitors including Augie Simoncini, and Bruno Hoffman. Even on a chilly night, it was Cranmer who proved he could heat things up and ride away victorious for the second year in a row.
