Another week, another TTL in the books. The thing I love most about the column is the fact that I can shoot it, write it, and share it within a matter of days. Don’t get me wrong, my heart is with print but something about that quick turnaround is addicting to me. This week I spent some time kicking it with the homies and catching up with Jackson Ratima. I’ve known Jackson for years now and one thing always remains consistent when it comes to him and his riding; he’s married to the streets. He is known for his creative spot selection as well as his unique trick list. I recently caught up with him during a mellow Sunday session and the following will keep you up-to-date on everything he’s got going on as of late and leading into the New Year.
Photos: Chris Marshall
If you keep up with the East Coast scene, or really the Deadline, The Trip or Fiend guys, there’s a good chance you have seen Chris Marshall’s name in a photo credit or ten. Chris is one of the guys that riders like Garrett Reynolds, Ty Morrow and Augie Simoncini trust to get the photo when it counts.
We’ve been seeing his name pop up pretty much everywhere between all of the magazines and different websites and figured it was more than time to get ahold of this guy and find out what he’s all about. We have a damn good Photos: interview that is a great read below along with a PHOTOGALLERY with a few of Chris’ favorite photos for you guys to get stoked on! So let’s get into this and find out just what this guy behind the lens ( and mask?) is all about.

Zack Gerber Interview
All photos by Chris Marshall
Zack is one of those riders who I’ve always been a huge fan of since the day I met him at a Baco contest years ago. Zack’s riding has always been absolutely nuts and, regardless of his current sponsor situation, he’s constantly pushing himself and staying in the small light of BMX that can come and go very quickly for a lot of pros. With a few changes to his sponsors list now and at the beginning of the year like joining The Daily Grind‘s pro team, we figured it was more than an appropriate time to get ahold of him to find out what’s new and a few things about him we didn’t know. Let’s see what he had to say!

Through The Lens: Creative Minds – Nick Sawyers
When it came time to get the third edition of “Creative Minds” done I had no problems picking the next artist to feature and that happens to be Nick Sawyers. It was a name that I wasn’t necessarily familiar with but after realizing all of the stuff that he has done in the BMX world I quickly realized that I had already been into his work without even realizing who he was. It’s not every day that the BMX world is graced with talented artists so when it happens it’s rad to see them get the opportunities to create and showcase their skills within the BMX community. Nick is a jack-of-all-trades, can work in a multitude of mediums, and has a sense of humor that shines through in almost every piece he creates. Take a few minutes and get to know someone who is down to put in the work and do what it takes to become successful as a creative, regardless of the trials and tribulations that come right along with that.
Kent Pearson Interview
I’m not really sure when the first time I saw a video featuring Kent Pearson. Needless to say that the guy has been killing it on a BMX bike long before I even started riding and continues to do so today like a champ. I’ve definitely been a fan of his riding for quite some time now thanks to his creative front brake riding that always leaves me stoked and wanting more, it’s easy to say he’s one guy I always look forward to seeing something new from.
Recently when his latest edit dropped, it got me thinking that it would be awesome to get ahold of this guy and find out just what he’s all about. One thing lead to another and we got in contact and I quickly learned he’s a whole lot more than just a guy who knows the ways of the front brake magic game. I shot him a bunch of questions to get to know him, and here we are today! If this doesn’t get you excited about front brakes or at the very least really stoked on Kent, something is wrong with you! Enjoy!

Through The Lens: Fact Check with Raul Ruiz
This week’s column comes in the form of the second edition of “Fact Check” featuring Raul Ruiz. I have known Raul for years now and have been riding with him since 2007 so it’s always a good time when we catch up and kick it. We met up in Highland Park, California, caught a sesh at his local park, talked some shit, shot some photos and this is the result. There have only been a few recurring features that I’ve done for the column but one like this is always a nice break from the regular interview process. I like being able to provide riders with a place to be creative and be themselves. It’s been my goal from day one to use this column as a place to interview riders, get creative, and share my passion for photography. It’s amazing to have an outlet that lets me have full creative control and it’s always an honor to be able to select each rider that I want to work with. No outside influence ever effects any decisions that I make for the column and that’s the way it will stay until it’s over. On that note, enjoy the second-edition of “Fact Check.”
Aaron Smith Interview
Photo: Brian Castillo
Aaron is one of those east coast riders that has really kicked a lot of ass the past two years or so. There were always a few clips here and there, then once he started picking up a few sponsors that really gave him the opportunity to travel and ride more, his riding progressed an insane amount. These days, he’s been bouncing around all over and just killing it on everything he comes across. We figured it was well overdue that we caught up with Aaron to find out what’s new with him, what he has cooking in the near future and just to learn a little bit more about what he’s about! Let’s see what he had to say!

Demarcus Paul Interview
All photos by Ben Clemens
Over the past year or so, we have seen a bunch of really good stuff from Demarcus. It almost seems like he came out of no where then he started frequently popping up in videos from all around southern California. Since then, things have definitely picked up for him with a few new sponsors like Freed and a few full edits out of him really showing us what he is capable of. We have had the chance to talk to him a few times, but never really got to know too much about him. We figured we better change that, so we hit him up with a bunch of questions to find out just who Demarcus is! Let’s check out what he had to say along with a bunch of fresh photos of him!
