Sam Cunningham Interview

February 12, 2013

740139_10151391228586252_199746490_o

I don’t know whether it’s the fact that I’m getting older, more bitter and shitter at riding, or that the amount of young kids who can do whatever they want on a bike these days is increasing rapidly. Sam Cunningham is 17, still lives at home, can’t legally drink yet (although that rarely stops him), doesn’t have a job, but can do pretty much every trick I wish I could do, and makes it look way better than I ever could anyway.

Despite this, Sam is one of the most humblest dudes I know, and has been ever since I first met him four years ago down my local. Since then Sam has developed into an incredibly talented and motivated rider who clearly has a bright future in BMX, and is killing in no matter if he’s riding or partying with his mates in a town near you.

Getting added to the Proper Bike Co team last year has deservingly bumped Sam up into the limelight and I’m stoked to see where riding his bike will take him this year and onwards  I had a chance to catch up with him and see what’s good just before he took off for a month long adventure to California. If you happen to be in SoCal and see a sun burnt British kid shredding, be sure to say hello. Check out what he had to say.

Insight: The Rotten Video

February 8, 2013

Rotten BMX

Back in September I was talking to Shajn Raines at Interbike about some of the stuff he was working on at the time. Shajn had mentioned that himself and a good number of the Bone Deth crew had been filming with Chris Crawford for the new “Rotten” video that Chris was working on with a bunch of people. Then a few days after Interbike, a trailer dropped giving everyone a glimpse of what was to come and needless to say, it looked like it was going to be absolutely wild. I know I was definitely looking forward to it.
Finally, at the end of January, the 2nd trailer dropped letting everyone see a little more with what was to come. I knew the video was getting close to completion, so I figured it would be a good time to get ahold of Chris to find out just what to expect from this video and when we can expect it to drop. Check out what he had to say!

Videos: Grant Castelluzzo

February 5, 2013

grantC_videos

Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of different people pick up cameras around here. In all reality, I think that’s one thing that has really stood out from the Midwest scene; the number of recognizable names who not only kill it on a bike, but kill it behind the lens. It’s pretty crazy to think of the dense population of filmers in the Chicago / Milwaukee area that have been doing things even before Youtube and Vimeo or even GoPro cameras to make things so much easier to produce an edit and get it out there… It must be in the PBR or something. One of those guys from that area is Grant Castelluzzo who has had plenty of years of experience behind a camera, but up until this past year or so he started turning it into a job instead of just a hobby. We figured it would be a good time to get ahold of him to find out just how things all got started and how they’re going today. Let’s see what he had to say!

Firsts: Fat Tony

February 4, 2013

fat tony BMX
Interview by Mark Noble

This instalment of our FIRSTS series with media guys in the BMX game is with none other than Fat Tony. Fat has been living the dream and changing his game for a good deal of years now, and shows no sign of letting up. I distinctly recall his package of photos with Terry Adams landing on my old desk back in the old magazine days, and we just knew we had to blow out the article as big as possible – the selection of images with Terry were definitely not your typical set of photos, and it was one of the most photogenic articles we ran back in the heydays of the mag. Shortly after that, he started working full-time at Ride BMX in Southern California and the rest is history – “I started learning to shoot proper photos around 2004, and started getting published in 2005. Then I started working at Ride in June 2006.”
So what is Fat Tony up to now? “Nowadays I am working for myself full time. I do a lot of video production for Alli Sports. I am also the BMX team manager for Freegun Underwear in the US, so I do photos and videos for them. Most of my photo work these days comes from contests. For example: I’ll go to X Games and shoot for Fox, Monster, Mongoose, and DC Shoes so they all have photos for their web sites and social networks, then I’ll sell individual photos from the event to brands like DK and Specialized for catalogs, ads, etc. And I am also starting to announce contests and demos… on camera and microphone stuff.”
Busy times indeed. Let’s find out how he started in all this, and rewind the clock with Fat’s own FIRSTS.

Grant Germain Interview

January 22, 2013

Grant Germain BMX

I’ve probably said this a thousand times already, but the level of riding the younger guys are producing these days is unbelievable. 15 year old kids are throwing down some fully mansized tricks that I would have never even imagined when I was that age. I guess that’s just the progression of BMX.
Over the past year or so, there’s been a name that I’ve been seeing popping up in edits here and there. Every time I’d see Grant’s name, he would be riding even better than before and it was clear he was definitely somebody to keep an eye out for. Then the other week a bomb shell of an edit dropped welcoming him to the Odyssey team and I knew it was time to find out just who this kid from New York is. I was able to get ahold of him and we put together this interview that I would imagine is just an introduction to plenty more coverage that we’ll be seeing from him in the future. Let’s see what he had to say!

Through The Lens: Catching Up with Jason Enns

January 16, 2013

Jason Enns BMX

I have known Jason for a long time now but it wasn’t until I moved to California in 2007 that I got to meet up with him and begin shooting with him. We have become friends over the years and any time I suggest meeting up to working on a project like this or just shoot photos in general he is always down for the cause, which is amazing. He is one of the most well respected riders in the game right now and seems to have a way about him that people are stoked on. His riding has progressed so much over the years and he has really found himself as a rider. He doesn’t follow trends, he doesn’t worry about who’s doing what, he just simply does what he does best and that is kill it on a bike. He puts in some serious effort into searching out new spots to stay fresh and original, he always reps the companies that support him and he always seems to be genuinely stoked to be riding. He’s the type of person that doesn’t take what he has for granted and understands that it could all end tomorrow. I had the chance recently to hang with Jason and as always, it was nothing but good times. You know what to do by now… grab a drink, sit back and read on.

Quicky: Brad Simms

January 15, 2013

Brad Simms BMX

It’s kind of crazy how fast life can change up. The other day I was talking to Brad about what was new with him and his plans for 2013. We were working on this Quicky so we could announce that he would no longer be riding for The Set when he got a message letting him know that he was being let go from the DC Shoes team. We went from talking about where he would be going next for his trips to how the hell are you going to get home? It was a hard reminder of how financially unstable being a professional rider can be sometimes. We decided to change up the Q&A a little bit and still run with it. Let’s see what Brad had to say about the changes going on in his life right now.

Every now and then I’ll come across somebody who is super talented, but they don’t really know how to get their name out there or they’re not really the kind of person that’s like “hey, look at me!”. Tim Burkart is one of those guys who I came across when one of his friends dropped a link to his portfolio site to check out. I knew right away I wanted to get ahold of this dude and find out what he’s all abut and do one of these Photos: features so people could see the work he is putting out. Luckily, Tim was up for the interview and he sent through a ton of damn good photos for you guys to check out. Let’s find out more about Tim, then check out this PHOTOGALLERY to see his work!
