March 25, 2008

There was some buzz on the internet today about the Chester Blacksmith’s bike check that showcased some new BMX company Eclat… Everyone was wondering as to what the hell this company is. The stuff looks good, so I can see why they were interested.

Now jump forward a few hours. As I am sitting at work I recieve an email from the Eclat Team manager Brian Tunney, he let out the press release. I’ll let his words tell you. Also let us at BMX union know what you think in the comments… iTod
March 25, 2008 –
Introducing Éclat, a fresh new component brand from the creative forces behind wethepeople bike company. Based at wethepeople’s international headquarters in Cologne, Germany, Éclat will exist as a separate entity, manufacturing an innovative collection of seats, brakes, grips, hubs, rims, tires, pedals and brake levers, with plans to expand coming further this year.
To begin, Éclat will be represented by Portland, Oregon’s Chester Blacksmith and the UK’s Ashley Charles, with the initial collection of components arriving to retailers by late summer of 2008.”In a time when the majority of BMX company’s components are becoming more identical by the day, we believed it was time to create a brand that manufactures unique components based on function and simplicity,” says Éclat owner/art director Klaus Dyba.
In regards to the brand name, “Éclat” is a French term, which, roughly translated means “excellence.” Éclat’s first foray into the component market is marked by a brand new patented seat and post design, which is remarkably simple and lightweight without sacrificing strength. Using 3D Torsion techniques, the seat material has been reduced to the fullest, with the final seat and post combo being ready for sale by late summer of 2008.
“I’m really exited about the new Éclat line. They’ve put a lot of thought into the new products and the people at Éclat have done a great job designing the finished product. I know riders won’t be disappointed with the line,” says Éclat rider Chester Blacksmith, currently on a European trek and testing a few products from Éclat’s line. Additionally joining the Éclat brand is Brian Tunney, who will serve as Éclat team manager.A list of international distributors will be announced soon.

Brian Tunney (Teammanager)

Radical Rick

March 13, 2008

The other day there was a thread started over on Bikeguide some kid asked what the site was like a few years ago… And then I got thinking about how much has changed over the years with just set ups, how much media there is, how many people ride, etc. Then I got thinking about another thing.. Radical Rick.

You know what I am talking about if you have been riding for 5+ years or so, maybe even less than that. But I remember way back when I read BMXplus and I was always super excited to read the next Radical Rick.

So today I decided to google the name just to see what came up and sure enough RadicalRick.net was chillen.. Doesn’t look like it has been updated since like 2005 but it was fun to just to check out and remember that stuff.

I guess I have never really asked this, but in the comments or in the message box maybe some people have some insight on to what they thought of RR and everything.

King Of New York Vs. DC shoes

March 6, 2008

The annual King of New York event was founded in the Bronx by Lou Perez in 1995. Lou ran the event every year until he handed over the reigns to me at baby bean Productions in 2006. With first Lou and now baby bean running the show, the event has gotten better and better, year after year.

In addition to the amazing athletes and enthusiastic crowds at the heart of the King of New York event, a team of great sponsors helps elevate the King of New York to the kick-ass event that it is. Not long ago, baby bean invited clothing and sneaker giant DC Shoes to join the King of New York event family of sponsors. We thought DC Shoes would be a great fit (no pun intended) but unfortunately, DC Shoes completely ignored our invitation.

So it hit us like a ton of bricks when we learned that DC Shoes had stolen the “King of New York” name and concept for its own event. Adding insult to injury, DC Shoes suggested that the “King of New York” event was its own creation!

Now, Lou and I are all about live and let live, and we considered letting DC Shoes slide. But there’s a problem with that: if we didn’t stop DC Shoes from using the name again, riders and skaters, along with everyone else, would begin to confuse the two events. Which event was which? Who was sponsoring what? Which event is that great event that Lou Perez started way back when? When this happens, everyone loses, most importantly all the people who have put their blood and sweat into supporting the King of New York event since 1995.

So baby bean asked DC Shoes to recognize our rights to the “King of New York” event name and not to use the name “King of New York” for events in the future. DC Shoes refused. So we now find ourselves in the middle of an expensive and stressful law suit against DC Shoes. baby bean didn’t want this fight, we would rather spend our time and resources creating great events. But DC Shoes – now part of Quicksilver, Inc., a company with over two billion dollars in annual sales – decided that it would rather hide behind an expensive team of lawyers than do the right thing.

It’s sad that a company like DC Shoes, started by snowboarder Ken Block and skateboarder Damon Way as footwear industry outsiders, is really no different than any other big business. Apparently, DC Shoes thinks deep corporate pockets give it the right to roll right over the little guy.

baby bean is going to do its best to make sure the King of New York event stays where it’s supposed to, but it’s not going to be easy. If you’d like to help, or if you just want to express what you think, let us know at dcbullshit@hotmail.com. Pass this e-mail along and spread the truth. If you want to call DC Shoes or Quiksilver yourself, go right ahead. Phone numbers are 760-599-2999 for DC and 714-889-2200 for Quiksilver. Thanks for listening.

Mickey Elias Video

March 1, 2008

Mickey is a good friend of mine, hes been riding since before I was. One of my first memories of him was at an old local park (I was 12ish at the time) a older skater freaked out on me and was about to beat my ass, and he just randomly showed up, didn’t say anything, and the dude backed down. It was pretty intense. However, Mickey is pretty hardcore, he broke his neck, and walked out of the old local trails, and drove himself to the hospital a few years back… Well about 2 years ago he made a video, and just now has he put it on youtube.. he rides even better than this now and is still one of the coolest most motivating guys I ride with. Enjoy.
