We’ve been seeing 3D printing becoming more and more popular as it becomes easier and more affordable to work with. We’ve been waiting to see how it can come into play with BMX as far as parts go, but we never considered this one. Complex just released the first part of a video series they’re doing documenting how Peter Binkley is utilizing 3D printing to give a young rider that was born without a hand, the opportunity to ride BMX! This first part is a little more of a background on the project and how it all came to be and how Jeremiah Smith got involved. We’re definitely excited to see part two!
UPDATE: You can now watch 3D Printed Prosthetics Enable A Kid To Ride BMX – Part 2!
“What if riding a bicycle wasn’t so easy?
Jimmy Wilson loves BMX biking more than anything, but has had trouble partaking in the sport himself due to the absence of fingers on his left hand. When Peter Binkley of Enabling the Future first met Jimmy he was determined to help. He designed a prosthetic hand for Jimmy by leveraging a global community of open source prosthetic designers and cutting edge technology from Intel. But before he can complete the design he meets up with pro BMXer Jeremiah Smith to get some advice on how to adapt his designs to the needs of the sport.” – Complex
