Madera: Chapter One Review

I finally got a copy of the new Madera video to check out today. I was pretty excited to check it out since I’ve been following the progress since the start. So was the video any good? Check out what I thought!

Alright, so lets start out with the basics of the concept of the video. Basically every guy on the Madera team was given a part in the video. They were told to pick a filmer for their part (which was basically whoever their friend who filmed and edited was). Then go out and film for a few months, have it edited, and then all the parts would be compiled into the video. It’s somewhat a new idea for putting together a video.

The list of riders and filmers goes like this…
Bryce Toole filmed and edited by Bobby Valentine
Dave McDermott filmed and edited by Conall Keenan
Jeff Kocsis filmed and edited by Wade Young
Josh Eilken filmed and edited by Tony Malouf
Buds (Friends/filmers/Matt Coplon) Edited by Grant Castelluzzo
Mike Hinkens filmed and edited by Gtant Castelluzzo
John Ludwick filmed and edited by Bill Politis
Tom Villareal filmed and edited by Conall Keenan

The video itself was pretty straight forward. There wasn’t any real over the top graphics and the video goes straight to it avoiding the menu until the end of the video. I was a fan of this since I can agree with Adam22 on his “excessively long intros” pet peeve. The video was on the ball in that department. The music was also pretty decent. The only song that I really knew was The Smashing Pumpkins in Dave McDermotts part. Otherwise the rest of the songs were new to me. I’d give you a list of songs…. but they didn’t have credits haha!

The filming and editing was pretty solid for the most part. It’s funny because you can see the differences between the way the guys filming and editing do things. I liked that since it gave the video a different feel for each part. All the guys filming had at least a few years behind the cameras too. That may put a little confidence in you. The wasn’t exactly HD either… but I think the video was aimed towards just a good vibe that makes you want to ride over asthetics.

Riding in the video was good, it was more or less the majority of the guys riding their local spots. At least I think that would be where the guys are riding. It wasn’t banger after banger or guys beating themselves up on huge stuff. I could probably count the number of skateparks and trails that appear in this video on one hand also.

The video itself runs for 25 minutes and is pretty enjoyable. I’m sure it would get quite a few people pumped up to go ride too. If it wasn’t raining right now I would probably go for a ride myself. If you remember the interviews I had asked each rider whose part they were most excited to see. It was a toss up between Dave McDermott and Jeff Kocsis… My personal favorite part was Josh Eilkens. I’m not saying the other guys parts weren’t good. I just liked Josh’s best.

Is the video worth paying for? Well yeah! It’s going for about $10 through any shop that carries Madera/Profile. That isn’t expencive at all. I’m sure you could slip that in your next order online and your mom wouldn’t even notice on the credit card statement. I couldn’t find it available on Dan’s or Albes quite yet though.. but it should be available soon enough.

Check out the Madera site.
Also, if you missed the interviews I did with the team about the video…
