Insight: Deluxe – U.S Versus Taiwan Production

BMX is interesting because there are so many factors that determine the frames and parts we ride. Cost and availability of materials, technology, time schedules, quantity and quality control issues are all things that most of us don’t really think about when it comes to buying something new for our bike. However, those are just some of the things brands have to consider when it comes to making the decision to have their products made in Taiwan, the U.S or anywhere else in the world.
Recently, Deluxe announced that Mark Potoczny’s signature PA Model frame would be available in two versions; made in the U.S and made in Taiwan. Over the years we have seen a handful of brands do products between the two and with the U.S option appearing to become more and more appealing of an option for production again, I figured it would be an awesome time to catch up with Deluxe’s Mark Noble to find out what lead to some of the decisions to give the U.S production a run and what kinds of differences we can find between the two production locations. If you caught Jason Enns’ Bike Check that dropped earlier today, you would have noticed he was riding his new signature frame, the Cerberus. This frame is made from fully heat-treated 4130 Sanko chromoly tubing with a 75.25-degree head tube angle, 71-degree seat tube angle, 11.7″ bottom bracket height, 8.75″ stand over height and a 13.50″ to 14″ chain stay length. The frame featuures a double butted front triangle with gussets on the top and down tube, 7mm thick investment cast drop outs with build in chain tensioners, removable seat stay brake mounts and an integrated seat post clamp. This frame is available in 20.8″ and 21″ top tube lengths with color options of flat black or chrome and a weight of 5 lbs. even (20.8″).
