I’m in absolute shock right now trying to process this news. According to multiple news sources, Dave Mirra is no longer with us after apparently taking his own life. This is extremely shocking news in every aspect. Dave has undoubtably been one of the biggest figures in BMX’s history and this is definitely a blow to BMX riders all around the world who looked up to him for his contributions to this sport of ours. There’s multiple sources reporting on the news from TMZ, an ABC> affiliate and >CNN. Below you can find a release on the news.

“GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – BMX legendary athlete Dave Mirra died Thursday afternoon in Greenville.
Greenville police responded to the 200 block of Pinewood Road around 4 p.m. for an apparent suicide.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 41-year-old Dave Mirra, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.

Considered an icon in the pro-BMX world, Mirra, was instrumental in bringing the sport to the City of Greenville, which now is home to more than 20 professional BMX riders. The record-holding athlete is survived by his wife and two children.

“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” said City of Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas.

The Greenville Police Department will be handling the death investigation.

The family of Dave Mirra would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time.

If you or a loved one are struggling with suicidal thoughts, you are encouraged to seek help through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 1-800-273-TALK.” – SOURCE: WCNC

The Expansion Project – Dave Mirra Interview

April 28, 2015

Fat Tony dropped the latest podcast interview for The Expansion Project and it’s with the one and only Dave Mirra! Hit play to listen in on this interview because there’s a TON of ground covered from his BMX career on up through what he’s getting into these days!

“The words “legend” and “icon” get thrown around pretty casually these days, and as much as I think the terms are overused my guest this week undeniably fits both of them… I had the chance to talk to none other than Dave Mirra.

Even if you’ve never ridden BMX or don’t know much about it, there’s a good chance you’ve still heard Dave’s name before. When it comes to BMX riders, he’s the closest thing there is to a “household name”.

The list of Dave’s accolades could go on for days, but here’s a small snippet of what’s he’s accomplished in his 41 years…

– He has won 14 X Games gold medals.
– He’s competed in both BMX and rally car racing at X Games.
– He was the first BMX rider to ever do a double backflip. (2000.)
– He has won the Toyota Grand Prix celebrity race. (2007)
– He has had multiple books written about him.
– He has hosted TV shows like MTV’s Real World Road Rules Challenge.
– He has had video games named and designed after him on various gaming platforms.
– He trained for competed in an EllisMania boxing match against motocross rider Brian Deegan.
– He co-founded a BMX bike company.
– He recently made the transition from BMX to endurance sports and has raced in triathlons and Ironmans.
– He and a team of three others won a RAAM (Race Across America) where they pedaled more than 3,000 miles from California to Maryland in just under five and a half days.

…and as the list goes on it doesn’t look like Dave is slowing down any time soon. He is a true elite athlete and a fierce competitor, but he is also a savvy investor, and on top of that he’s a great guy, a husband, and a father of two.

In this episode I had so much to ask this childhood hero of mine that I opted to skip the Chime In segment and just keep the interview rolling. I didn’t want to waste any time, and I wanted to get as much out of this conversation as possible.

The interview is focused on two main topics—athletics and finance. I got to ask Dave about how he currently trains, eats, and recovers while focusing on triathlons, and I picked his brain about how he is wired for success when it comes to competition, whether that be BMX, endurance sports, racing cars, boxing, or anything else he sets his mind to.

As the highest paid BMX rider in the history of the sport, Dave was able to shed some light on the financial success he’s experienced and gave some great insight in to how he’s learned to save and manage his money and what he has invested in over the years. He even threw out some mind-blowing figures about some of his largest endorsements.

It my extreme honor and pleasure to present to you, the Dave Mirra interview. ”

Dave Mirra – Hoffman Warehouse Session 1996

November 3, 2014

We can always count on Paul Covey to send through some classic goodness for us. Here’s some footage from way back in 1996 where Dave Mirra crushes Mat Hoffman’s warehouse ramps. All I can think about is Jay and Silent Bob when I watch this, haha.

“1996 – Dave Mirra – Hoffman Warehouse Session

Long before he became a serious tri-athlete, and prior to his rally car racing career, the BMX world observed Dave Mirra dominate every ramp and skate park in his path with burliness, technical tricks, and style for miles. From his earliest days as a flatlander to his winning streak at major contests, Dave has always stood out from the pack. Anyone who ever personally witnessed him rip a mini-ramp with a spine was in for a real show.”
