Sal Saavedra in Intensive Care

November 13, 2012

S&M flow rider and Mike Saavedra’s brother, Sal Saavedra, took a wild crash over the weekend that left him in intensive care. They put him under a medically induced coma for 48-hours and he has been woken up and is already showing signs of recovery thanks to the fact that he had a full-face helmet on. You can get a full update on the situation over on the ESPN BMX blog. Everyone keep Sal in your thoughts!

Serenity Ride Shop – Two Year Anniversary Jam Edit

November 13, 2012

ESPN BMX dropped this video from the Serenity Ride Shop two year anniversary jam they threw. Awesome shop and it looks like it was an awesome day.

“Serenity Ride Shop in Chandler, Ariz. celebrated its two-year anniversary this past weekend with a jam. Not only did a ton of Phoenix locals show up, but Tip Plus/Primo and Cult brought out a huge crew. Between that crew and some of the local rippers, some good riding went down. All in all, everyone had a great time. Tip Plus, Primo, and Cult stoked everyone by providing some serious prizes and a lot of giveaways. And the day ended perfectly with a showing of Cult’s new video “Talk is Cheap.” If you are in the area definitely check out Serenity Ride Shop and try and support a rider-owned shop that is doing things right.” – Aaron Nardi / ESPN BMX

Riders Connect with Wounded Soldiers

November 12, 2012

Brian Kachinsky, Jeremiah Smith, Chad Kagy, Nate Wessel, Mike Escamilla, Morgan Wade, Darryl Nau, Scott Powell and Mykel Larrin are back in the Middle East to hang out with the troops and get them stoked while they are stuck in a bad situation. This is a look at what they have been getting into so far on this trip!

“When the military brings tours to its bases, much effort is put into organizing entertainment for the entertainment. In past Bikes Over Baghdad tours, the BMX riders have had the opportunity to take target practice, fly in Apache helicopters and travel by way of C-130s. Today, we were attacked by dogs.

The riders started off the day meeting with wounded soldiers who are stationed around the Middle East but have come to this base as part of the Air Force’s intratheater care program for treatment and healing time. The mutual admiration between the troops and the athletes on this tour has been evident from the moment we set foot on the base. Each group has such respect for the dedication, risk and camaraderie demonstrated by the other, and their conversations constantly reflect those feelings. This morning, a fast bond was formed as the soldiers and riders swapped injury stories and shared frustrations with rehab, setbacks and the feeling of missing out.

“We know what it’s like to be separated from your friends and your team when you’re injured,” Brian Kachinsky said after an hour meet-and-greet and poster signing. “You want to be out there with them. And we’ve all had a lot of injuries, so in that way, we can relate. But there are a lot of things we can’t relate to, like the sacrifices they make to be here.”

After lunch with a group of soldiers who’d won the opportunity to dine with the riders, we took off for the flight line for a tour of a B1 bomber and more photo ops.

Then the tour went to the dogs.

At the kennel and training compound, we were introduced to several MWDs [military working dogs] and watched a demonstration showcasing their extensive obedience and attack training. Then a few of us threw on a bright red, very padded protective jacket and learned what it feels like — sort of — to be taken down by an active duty military dog.

And that was all before dinner.” – ESPN BMX

Facetime with Simon Tabron

November 11, 2012

ESPN BMX caught up with Simon Tabron to talk some history of spinning with him. Take a peek!

“U.K. to U.S. BMX Vert transplant Simon Tabron may not have been the first rider to claim the 900 (Mat Hoffman pulled it first in 1989), but there is no doubt that Tabron is the owner of the most consistent 900 spin in all of BMX, as well as the one and only back-to-back 900 in all of vert.

In the above video, Tabron recounts his early days learning 540s (where he mistakenly over-rotated a 360 to fakie), his dalliances with early 900s (where he over-rotated a 540) and the obsession that stirred inside of him after successfully getting the rotation down. But the 900 air isn’t something vert riders can toy around with though. As Simon recounts above, he had to choose his battles of when and where to throw the trick. Sometimes it worked out (at the Worlds in 1991) and sometimes he went eight years without landing them. Video by Justin Kosman” – ESPN BMX

Spot Hunter – Ruben Alcantara

November 5, 2012

Check out Ruben Alcantara putting in work on a unique spot along with a few guest clips from Clint Zabodyn and Devon Lampman. Can’t go wrong with some Ruben footage.

“I’ve been trying to figure out a way to do edits with everyone that comes through Austin, Texas without taking away too much time from their sponsorship obligations while in town. After Texas Toast, Ruben Alcantara stayed in town to work on a new video for Fly Bikes. On one of his free days, we went and explored a new spot on the edge of town. It worked out really well and it’s not just another plaza edit. Welcome to the first episode of Spot Hunter, featuring former Austin resident Ruben Alcantara on a new, perfectly transitioned spot we recently stumbled upon.” – Charlie Crumlish / ESPN BMX

Diego “Mono” Navarro – Spain Life

November 1, 2012

Aaron Nardi recently made a trip to Spain to meet up with Cult‘s Diego “Mono” Navarro to get to know him better and to stack a ton of damn good clips that you can check out right here. Take a peek!

“I was in the south of Spain for a bit and came across a recent OSS BMX video of an Argentinean rider named Diego “Mono” Navarro. Instantly, I knew I had to do something with him, so I headed to Barcelona and got a hold of Antonio Robles. We headed to the skatepark a few days later and all watched as Mono crushed it. Later that night we met up at midnight, before going into a club at 2 a.m. for an ’80s dance party. Even with a language barrier, hanging out with Mono is always a great experience. I want to thank Mono, Toni, LTW, and the Barcelona locals for making our stay in their city amazing. Music: Fly Moon Royalty “Roxy”” – Aaron Nardi / ESPN BMX
