2012 Odyssey Texas Toast Explained

October 8, 2012

I’m slowly dying inside knowing that I’ll be stuck at work and not in Austin, Texas for the Texas Toast Jam…

“Several years ago, following an ongoing back injury, Taj Mihelich turned his focus from riding BMX as a pro to working for Odyssey BMX. Aside from spearheading a new project known as Faridale Bicycles out of Odyssey, one of Taj’s responsibilities was event planning. Odyssey, and Taj, wanted to channel the spirit of past BMX jams that were homegrown, progressive and outside the boundaries of the established norms, such as the Backyard and Metro Jams. Texas Toast was born. Last year, Texas Toast came to Austin and pitted pro riders against obstacle courses, custom-made rideable obstacles from a variety of brands, and contests in dirt and “park.” It was, for many a return to a simpler time in BMX, and this coming weekend, Texas Toast returns for its second year.

In the above video, Mihelich goes behind the scenes of the planning and discusses what to expect as 98% of the worldwide BMX scene descends on Austin, Texas. Video by Charlie Crumlish.” – ESPN BMX

Facetime: Chester Blacksmith

October 7, 2012

This video was released a little while after it was filmed since Chester makes a reference to his plans on going to Interbike, which happened a few weeks back, but otherwise it’s a real good update with that he has going on these days. Check it!

“Following an éclat team trip to China in the spring, Wethepeople pro Chester Blacksmith returned home to Portland, Ore. and stayed local for most of the summer to enjoy the good weather. In the above video, Blacksmith checks in from Portland and discusses recent developments with Wethepeople’s frame technology, the switch from Ipath to Lotek and the future of street riding (“really crazy” or “really tech”). Video by Cory Williams.” – ESPN

Mike Gray Edit

October 1, 2012

After you check out the edit, head over to ESPN for a Q&A that goes along with this!

“Mike Gray put in work at street spots, parks, and plazas around So Cal and his hometown near Toronto, Canada for this edit. Gray, 19, spent nearly six months in the states earlier this year and turned heads everywhere he went, which lead him to pick up two sponsors (Freegun Underwear and Index Ink) before moving back north of the border. With tons of style, a deep bag of tricks, and a contagious positive attitude, Mike is definitely one to keep your eye on. This past weekend, Gray finished fourth place in the second round of The Hunt’s BMX video contest. His last trick was very brave.”

Jared Souney’s Film Archives

September 27, 2012

If you have been around BMX long enough, there’s no doubt that you have seen some of Jared Souney’s work. In this video that ESPN dropped he talks about a few of his favorite photos from 1996 – recently. So rad. I remember a bunch of these photos from the magazines and everything.

“Jared Souney has been riding BMX and shooting photos for over half of his lifetime. In those years, he has documented many phases of BMX, from his local scene in the Boston, Mass. area to his years at Ride BMX Magazine and beyond into the Pacific Northwest. Here, Jared gives a little history behind some of his favorite photos from a time before digital photography. Music: Warm Weather “Older”.” – ESPN BMX

Chris Bracamonte – End of Summer Edit

September 25, 2012

Chris Bracamonte is damn smooth and Tommy Blanco did a real good job with the filming and editing. This is definitely one to check out.

“Recently picked up by Dave Mirra’s own Mirraco bikes, Chris Bracamonte has been hard at work this summer combing the streets, parks and school yards of southern California in search of new territory to explore and shred. His persistence for riding every chance he gets in between work, trips with his new sponsor, and hiding out from the summer heat, allowed Chris to compile an entire section of new footage for the above video. Check it above and be sure to look for more from Chris in the coming months.” – ESPN BMX

Inside the Mutiny Bikes Office

September 23, 2012

This is awesome. I don’t think a lot of people really know what goes into running a BMX company and how simple, but complex, that it can be. ESPN BMX dropped this sweet video that features Mutiny Bikes owner, Gaz Sanders, in their office and a quick look at their warehouse inside Empire. I bet you didn’t expect it to be so simple of a setup, huh?

“In 2005, Gaz Sanders and Joe Simon purchased Mutiny Bikes from founding owner Steev Inge and moved the brand to Austin, Texas. As the new owners took over the brand, Mutiny took on a new life as a bike company, and almost everything about the company changed. In the following years, Mutiny released several now iconic videos and revamped everything from frames to team riders to graphics (which, by my own admittance, are some of the best in BMX).

Now seven years later, Mutiny continues to produce some of the best BMX hard goods and videos in all of BMX. Recently, Mutiny team rider George Boyd decided to take a look inside the workings of Mutiny, and the above video is the result. I know everyone might be industry’d out after this week’s Interbike coverage, but this is a small taste of what it’s like in a home grown, rider-owned BMX company.” – ESPN BMX

On The Road with Credence Photogallery

September 22, 2012

Head over to the ESPN website to check out a rad photogallery that Brian Yeagle shot from some of the recent Credence adventures that Clint Reynolds and the crew have been going on. This is an awesome extension to Clint’s interview that revolves around this trip that can be found in issue 9 of The Albion.

Andrew White Photographer Portfolio

September 12, 2012

Photographer, Andrew White, has a fresh portfolio up on the ESPN BMX website for you to check out. I’m always stoked on Andrew’s work. There are so many good shots in this one.
