Inside BASE Brooklyn’s Video Legacy

June 1, 2012

Here’s a little history on the Base Brooklyn‘s video history. This one will be super interesting for some of the older guys.

“In the late ’80s, a group of Brooklyn, N.Y. area BMX riders formed a crew in opposition to some of the more violent gangs in their neighborhood at the time. Dubbed “B.A.S.E.,” the crew’s name stood for “Brooklyn Area Straight Edge.” Their focus surrounded BMX riding in and around Brooklyn and Manhattan, along with the popular New York hardcore music of the time.

At that time, BMX was healthy and growing in New York City, thanks in part to skateparks in the South Bronx (Mulally Skatepark, which hosted contests through the New York Parks Department and 2-Hip), the Brooklyn Banks (a go-to meeting place for BMXers as far back as the ’80s and host to an impromptu contest from Ron Wilkerson’s 2-Hip Meet The Street series), and a growing number of riders that flocked to the city from New Jersey, Long Island and beyond when the weather was nice.

But aside from some very early t-shirt initiatives that didn’t get too far, there were no BMX brands that represented the very raw approach BMX was taking in New York City. BASE Brooklyn, the crew of dirt and street riders from the Brooklyn area and beyond, changed all that. Early on, like any BMX brand making a push, it started with t-shirts, and slowly morphed into sweatshirts, stickers, shorts, and perhaps most importantly, videos. Videos that documented and defined riding in and around New York City before it had ever been done.

In the above video, esteemed New York City video producer Glenn PP Milligan and BASE Brooklyn’s own Enos Colombo take a behind the scenes look at several early and very influential videos in the BASE Brooklyn legacy. BASE took a bit of a hiatus over the past decade, but the brand is now starting to re-emerge, and with good reason. BASE Brooklyn helped shape what has now become a huge scene within BMX, and it’s about time they got the recognition they deserved. Much like what Zoo York did for skateboarding throughout the ’90s, BASE Brooklyn did for BMX. They defined it. Video by Aaron Nardi.” – ESPN

Jeff Kocsis – Mic’d Up

May 26, 2012

You can’t go wrong with some fresh Jeff Kocsis footage!

“MacNeil and Animal Bikes pro Jeff Kocsis threw a jam in his home town of Clifton N.J. (also the original hometown of Animal Bikes) to kick off the opening of his new bike shop last month. Jeff and his father opened the shop with his brother Kyle as the mechanic and his mother managing the books — basically it’s an all Kocsis operation. The jam was held at the Clifton Skatepark and a bunch of Animal Bikes riders came out for the event. We put a microphone on Jeff and followed his around throughout the day to capture the craziness that is Clifton. Music by: Saukrates “Say I”” – ESPN

Glendale, Arizona Skatepark Scene

May 22, 2012

“Bobby Kanode recently sent over a new Glendale edit featuring the likes of Eric Bahlman, Joey Motta, Travis Cordova, Jesse Tellez, Cory Wiergowski, Nick Bullen, Dean Watson, AJ Krueger, Jake Cohoe, Jose Martinez and Brett Cohoe. Normally, we use this space to inundate you with technical information about the scope of the tricks, camera used and the lousy attitude of filmer on said day of filming, but today, we’re just going to say that Bobby came through with a great edit of a scene that has fun at the park and progresses at the same time. According to Kanode, “I think this will be the last Glendale edit I ever make, seeing as I just moved from Glendale to Tempe. It was my home park for five years, and now it’s an hour away!”” – ESPN

Sergio Layos Bike Check

May 17, 2012

I’m always into Sergio’s setups. So dialed.

“I met up with Sergio Layos in Madrid, Spain on a recent trip to Europe. Sergio was unfortunately injured at the time, but he was nice enough to show us his latest setup. His improved 2012 Fly Bikes Trueno frame is build up with a redesign of his signature bars as well as some newly released and prototype parts from Fly Bikes. Sergio also jus received an invite to ride BMX Park at X Games Los Angeles in just a couple of weeks, so be on the lookout for Sergio to be shredding some concrete near The Staples Center very soon.” – ESPN
