Through The Lens: Catching Up with Ryan Metro

This week’s column came about in an interesting way. My good friend Jesse Bower, aka Fisher from back in New York who is part of the FBM Hall of Fame crew hit me up to come down and visit for a few days. While we were talking he happened to mention Ryan’s name saying that he lives out in So Cal and he was going to try and hang with him as well. As soon as I heard that I got the idea to interview Ryan and get him a chance to fill everyone in on the latest with his life and riding. It’s been quite a bit since most people have heard Ryan’s name so it was my goal to spend the day with him and just see what comes of it. The quick version goes a little something like this…We linked up at his house in the morning, hopped on the subway and headed to downtown Los Angeles to cruise around with him and a few friends from back in Louisville where Ryan is from. There was no real plan and no real destination. We simply set out to have some fun on our bikes and leave the bullshit behind. Although it was raining all day we still managed to find a few spots to ride and it was a nice reminder to slow down a bit and take it all in. BMX is an amazing thing and sometimes it’s days like that which put things into perspective and make you really appreciate something so simple as cruising through city streets with no plan but to have fun. Through The Lens: A Different Perspective #2

As a photographer I am always searching out ways to set myself apart and create content that people will be into. It’s one of the biggest challenges and one of the hardest parts about it to be honest, especially these days when everyone has a camera of some sort with them on a regular basis whether it is a digi-cam or an iphone and life is being documented by the minute. It’s a mix of doing what makes you happy and trying to figure out what will make viewers happy as well. That’s where this new “A different perspective” idea came from. Over the years I have interviewed tons of pro riders about anything and everything except one important topic. What is it like from their perspective to go out and shoot with a photographer? What it is that makes one person better to shoot with than others? I have always wondered about what goes on inside a riders mind before they prepare to shoot a crazy banger and put all of their trust into the photographer. Check out some more photos from my trusty disposable camera from the X Games and see what Rob Wise, Aaron Ross and Josh Harrington all had to say for the second edition of “A different perspective.”

Through The Lens: The Process – Writing a Magazine Article

Photography is something that I have loved for almost as long as I can remember. It’s one of those things that just makes sense to me. To be able to capture single moments in time and have them to look back on forever is an incredible thing. Photography is not only what I live for but it’s almost somewhat of an obsession. Now, even though the saying is “a picture is worth a thousand words” no one wants to see a magazine without a little something to read. Writing magazine articles is a huge privilege and an opportunity that I never take for granted. Having your own photos in print is one thing but having an article with your photos as well as your words is a pretty amazing feeling. Most people might wonder how articles come about, how magazines decide on which ones to run, who writes them, and who comes up with the ideas. Well, if you happen to be one of those people then you are in luck because that’s what this week’s column is all about; creating an article from a concept to a finished product.

Through The Lens: Company Check – FBM

This week I am stoked to present a new Company Check and interview with FBM’s Steve Crandall. I grew up in Syracuse New York, which is about an hour from Ithaca, New York where FBM was born and Binghamton, New York where FBM headquarters has existed for quite some time now. As a young rider getting to see and meet guys like Steve, Kelly Baker, Mike Tag, Magilla and all of those dudes really had a huge impact on me. Back then those were my first experiences of meeting and actually talking to “pro” riders so it was a huge deal. Years later after knowing riding with Crandall and a majority of the FBM guys I actually was asked to be a part of the Grassroots team they set up and that again had a huge impact on me and my outlook on riding in general forever. FBM has always just had this amazing vibe and feel to everything they do and that simply comes from having the most genuine, honest intentions based around having a good time and enjoying life. I can’t stress enough how important it is to be doing what you want in life that makes you happy regardless of the amount of money you are making. I remember hearing Crandall once say “you can always make more money” in regards to taking advantage of an opportunity and living life as opposed to heading to work and regretting your decision to skip out on an adventure. I always think back to that moment whenever I need to make a quick decision and since then, I always choose to do what makes me happy over what will make me more money and that to me is what FBM is and has always been about…that, and making some seriously kick-ass BMX products. This isn’t an introduction to FBM, as you should already be quite familiar with them but it’s more an opportunity for Steve to answer some questions, voice some opinions and get people stoked on what the FBM crew is up to lately, and where they are headed in the coming years. Sit back, relax and prepare yourself for an interview with one of the most dedicated riders and  company owners that I know.
