For this weeks feature I decided to continue the Creative Minds series and instantly thought of Damian Fulton. For those of you out there that don’t know, Damian is the creator responsible for the entire Radical Rick comic strip series that was featured in BMX Plus! magazines for over a decade. For many readers out there, it was THE reason to pick up a copy of Plus! and had a pretty big following. There wasn’t a BMX rider out there that wasn’t down with Radical Rick. The series was always fresh, and Damian was putting out solid content month after month. I have a ton of respect for him and can’t believe he ran it for so long. I know all too well that dealing with deadlines on a regular basis can be a huge pain in the ass. So the fact that he made it work, regardless of his already packed schedule says a lot about his love for the work he was doing and the product he was creating. After tracking him down I caught up with him at his Southern California home and was honored to have the chance to hear about all things Radical Rick from the man himself. Obviously this feature was aimed for the old school heads out there but it’s also a bit of a history lesson for the younger generation so hopefully everyone gets a little something out of it.
Through The Lens: WYDK #5 featuring Andrew Lazaruk
There has always been something intriguing to me about getting some behind the scenes details on a photo. I don’t know what it is about it but I just get stoked on seeing exactly how someone shot a specific photo and get a little insight into the process. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that every photographer shoots a little differently, which in turn makes each story unique in its own way. I can remember studying photos in magazines and borderline obsessing about the way that they were shot and honestly over the years not much has changed. I still find myself getting lost in photos to this day with the same level of curiosity that I had when I first started shooting. With that said, enjoy round five of WYDK.
Through The Lens: The Process – Writing a Weekly Column
For this week’s column I wanted to work on a project with Florida transplant Tom Villarreal. I met Tom a few years back at a contest in Florida and got to ride with him and kick it with him while I was there. Skip ahead to now and we still link up to chill and ride when we can. I always like supporting riders that I think do things the right way and one of them is Tom. He is underrated in my opinion and definitely deserves some time in the spotlight. He has been putting in work and making moves in L.A. riding a bunch and trying to book commercial gigs. On the way down to meet up with Tom I was thinking about what direction I wanted to take with this week’s piece and to be honest, I was kind of struggling with a concept that I was going to be happy with. I went back and forth with a few ideas and then all of the sudden it hit me that I was actually creating the concept of the article without even writing it yet. Basically I decided to write TTL #57 about what it takes to keep up on a weekly column so if you have any interest in learning what goes into it, and the thought process that goes into every feature then this is for you.

Through The Lens: Growing Up in East L.A. with Anthony “Boy” Flores
Boy cruisin’ the streets with an opposite smith.
This week I got the chance to interview Anthony Flores a.k.a “Boy” about what it was like growing up as a BMX rider in East Los Angeles. A lot of riders share a similar upbringing of cruising the neighborhood with their buddies to the ice cream store but Boy’s upbringing was a little more raw than that. Sure, he fell in love with riding just like most of us did but he also spent his childhood in the projects. By no means am I saying that it’s a bad thing, I am simply pointing out the fact that Boy avoided all of the typical shit that comes along with growing up in a rough part of a big city and decided to focus his energy into riding and I think that’s awesome. I have known Boy for a long time now and have been shooting with him ever since I moved out West. There has never been a dull moment hanging out with him, he’s always got some stories to tell, and a smile on his face. He also holds down a job, and does what it takes to make sure his son Jordan a.k.a “Mr. Young BOYrack87” is taken care of along with his girl. Needless to say, he has been there for BMX since day one and his passion remains. Enjoy.
Through The Lens: Catching Up with Stevie Churchill
Anyone who follows BMX closely knows that Stevie Churchill is a kid from the East Coast that absolutely kills it. He is known for doing ridiculously difficult tricks that some pros would hold onto for enders in legit video parts, only he does them in everyday web edits. There is something about his riding that is crazy to watch because he makes everything look so effortless. There isn’t a single rider out there that could disagree with the fact that Stevie is changing the street game as we speak. Not only does he kill it with how technical his riding is but he also mixes in the big moves that would make anyone’s ankles and wrists cringe. He is humble, doesn’t let his talent get to his head and has the skills to be on top of the podium at any street contest out there. I got the chance to chill with him for the day before he headed back East and took some time to fire some questions his way to fill everyone in on what’s going on. Enjoy.
DC Shoes Discontinues Its BMX Program
The photo above is one of my all-time favorites featuring Hucker sessioning the box at a demo in the parking lot of a strip club in Colorado with a few friends.
If you are any kind of fan of BMX you have more than likely heard the news about the DC BMX program getting dropped today. It came as a surprise to many people and I am sure caught the riders completely off guard. They were all at a point where they had been working on there 2013 contracts and making them official. Well, obviously that didn’t work out and here we are…
Through The Lens: Story Time with Matt Beringer
Whenever it comes time to put together an article for print you typically end up with more photos and copy than you can use. Sometimes certain parts of articles just have to get fully cut out due to space limitations. So, for example, the following story that you are going to read written by none other than Matt Beringer was originally set to go into an upcoming interview in Soul Magazine about Matt’s yard. There was a small problem though and that was the fact that he wrote nearly 1,000 words in response to a single question in regards to the water slides in the yard and how he got them. Now, if you know anything about print, you would know that 1,000 words are way too many words for one answer. I immediately took the answer and saved it as “Beringer Bonus” and had a plan to use it at one point for a future project simply because it’s an awesome story that I felt was definitely worth sharing. When I was out in Utah staying with Matt for a week working on a few different things we ended up spending a lot of time just shooting the shit and talking over some beers. He has so many awesome stories and they are always entertaining so I decided that instead of having this never see the light of day I would share it with the world. Welcome to the first edition of “Story Time” with S&M lifer and legend Matt Beringer.
