Weird & Revered In The Deep South

December 28, 2017

We were just thinking it has been a while since a Weird & Revered video has popped up…

It looks like Justin Schwanke and the Weird & Revered crew decided it was time to load up and head south from Canada to see what the southeast corner of the U.S has to offer for street spots and skateparks. Here’s a video they put together from their recent trip that appears to have been a ton of fun. As always, you get a good mix of creative, unique and original riding, making for a great watch from start to finish.

“When it comes to planning a BMX trip, the world is your playground. There are plenty of obvious destinations to choose from but the Weird & Revered took the unconventional way and went south. From Atlanta, Georgia to Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida the guys had a ton of adventures in their Dodge Mini Van!

“Weird and Revered’s Justin Schwanke, Ted Bambrick, Logan Kirzinger, Lake Mulligan, Joe Weidman, Tilsyn Inch, Tyler Horness, and Thomas Henderson make the most of the Edmonton winter seeking refugee indoors at Ride N’ Play skatepark and a few private indoor ramp setups. Not only are these guys surviving the winter, but they are thriving despite the challenges it can present.” – DIG

Weird & Revered – At Home With Justin Schwanke

March 10, 2017

We’re always stoked to see some new footage from Justin Scwhanke. Here’s a new Weird & Revered video that DIG dropped featuring Justin getting down on his backyard ramp setup. As always, Justin came through with a TON of creative and unique clips that make for a super good watch. Get on that play button and enjoy!

“I filmed this video in my backyard throughout the summer and fall of 2016. Every session involved one camera, a tripod, an archaic MP3 player, headphones, and my ever-expanding list of trick ideas (most of which don’t actually work out). My usual audience is the assortment of birds and gophers who take up residence in the backyard. On occasion though, my neighbours may watch from afar in confusion. I can only imagine what they think when they hear grunts of frustration as I ride alone in the same line for hours on end.” – Justin Schwanke

Weird & Revered – Electrocoaster

November 25, 2016

If you like freecoasters and creative, unique riding, then this new Weird and Revered video featuring Justin Schwanke is just what you’re looking for. Hit play to watch Justin get creative on a bunch of different spots, many most would probably not consider with the help of his freecoaster. Real dialed from start to finish. Enjoy!

“For a while now I’ve wanted to create a BMX film with an electronic or light focused theme. I thought this would offer a fresh way to challenge my editing skills. Over the past couple of years I’ve been filming B-Roll to fit with the concept. Most of the footage was collected in a random Air BNB in Zagreb, Croatia. There were many elaborate looking lights in the apartment that offered a lot of creative potential. I spent a couple hours one evening playing with my camera and thinking of interesting ways to capture the warm toned hues. Aside from that, the rest of the B-Roll was filmed in California (ex. Santa Monica Pier) or at home here in Alberta. From a riding standpoint, I figured I would utilize the more obscure freecoaster clips I’ve collected throughout 2016. The end result is Electrocoaster. Special thanks to Jesse Baraniuk, Duke Thomson-Kurz, and Thomas Henderson for helping film most of the riding. Their patience and skill behind the lens is appreciated as always.” -Justin Schwanke

Weird & Revered – Country Livin’

October 20, 2016

When you don’t live in the city and you only have gravel roads and a lot of woods and fields to work with, you have to get creative to find spots to ride. Justin Schwanke and the Weird & Revered crew have been no strangers to getting creative and this video is a good reminder of this. Hit play to watch them get down on random spots, gaps over roads and things like barrels that were laying around the farm! This is a good change of pace to all the nibbler jibbler ledge edits we see every day.

“Growing up in rural Alberta all of my life, riding back in the day was a much different experience than it is now. As a kid without a car, there weren’t many people to ride with and there wasn’t much to ride. Living in the middle of nowhere meant you had to make your own spots and your own set-ups. When I was young and before I had ramps, I spent a lot of time pedaling around on country roads looking for ‘spots.’ Hardly considered spots by popular standards, these places to ride were as simplistic as could be. One might be a ditch that was smooth enough to jump or another might be a shed to use as a drop. Often you would have to modify the spot with some plywood or shovel work to make it rideable. As unconventional as the set-up may be, it was always what you did with it that mattered most. And naturally, the more creative you got the more entertaining it could be.

Inspired by my buddy, Brodie Gwilliam of Bush League fame ( Watch Brodie’s videos here ), I felt the need to return to this period of my BMX experience. I wanted to make a video chalked full of my own ‘country spots.’ I pedalled and drove around to search for places with potential. Some spots needed a lot of work and others were ready to be ridden. I think I put the most effort into that trailer I found at 0:25. I had to clean all of the junk off of it, cut down a bunch of trees, and make some trails so you could pedal on the grass. Once I had a list of spots and had some of the modifications done, I hit up my friend Colin Reimer to join me. We filmed most of this video in the spring before Colin left for a work term in France and I left to go travel myself. Tyler Steckly came along on some sessions to film and goof around. I don’t think we spent more than 7 days filming and all of the spots were within a 10 km radius of my house. We had a ton of fun making this video and I hope it shows. Enjoy!” -Justin Schwanke
