Nitro World Games – BMX Best Trick Qualifying Highlights

June 29, 2016

With the Nitro World Games just a few weeks away, they have been busy locking down the final riders that will be qualified to ride in the contest. Today, we have a rad video courtesy of the Nitro World Games for you to check out from the Best Trick Qualifier that went down the other weekend. Needless to say, when you drop some of BMX’s finest riders on a crazy ramp setup like this… Things are going to get loose! Hit play and check out what went down!

Did you see what went down in the BMX Trip Hit Qualifying? Nitro World Games – BMX Triple Hit Qualifying Highlights

“The BMX final qualifying lineup for the highly anticipated Nitro World Games is now complete. Following the announcement of athletes invited directly to the final qualifiers for BMX Best Tricks and BMX Triple Hit, additional riders have advanced from pre-qualifiers that were held at Nitro Circus’ Academy of Excellence in California earlier this month. Newly announced today, three more athletes in each competition will also be joining the field as invited wildcards.

BMX Best Tricks
In BMX Best Tricks, Andy Buckworth and Brian Fox qualified in this event in addition to their spots on the BMX Triple Hit list, taking first and sixth place, respectively. Joining them, in a stunning development, is Nitro Circus Live all-around star Gavin Godfrey. Determined to push his skills and compete against the best in the world, Godfrey jumped at the chance to compete for a spot and astonishingly leaped into second place at the pre-qualifying event. Up-and-comers Dominic Kirkham and Alex Landeros then took third and fourth place. Brandon Schmidt is another athlete stepping up and making waves outside of his regular discipline. A snowboarder and contraptions specialist on the Nitro Circus Live tour, Schmidt shocked onlookers by placing in the top five. Three more athletes have also been added to Best Tricks as wildcard selections: Seven-time X Games medalist Vince Byron, the world’s first triple and quadruple backflipper Jed “The Warrior” Mildon, and Andrew “Mini” Ahumada, who recently battled against Ryan Williams in attempt to land the massive first BMX triple frontflip, will all compete in the July 15 Nitro World Games final qualifying event.

The 19 final qualifiers in both BMX Triple Hit and in BMX Best Tricks will clash at Rice-Eccles Stadium on July 15 – the day before the inaugural Nitro World Games. Only the eight highest scoring riders in each event will advance. See below for the full list of athletes advancing to the BMX Triple Hit and BMX Best Tricks final qualifiers.

BMX BEST TRICKS FINAL QUALIFIERS
Andrew Ahumada, James Foster, Brandon Loupos, Jaie Toohey, Andy Buckworth, Brian Fox, Todd Meyn, Zack Warden, Vince Byron, Gavin Godfrey, Jed Mildon, Matty Whyatt, Pat Casey, Dominic Kirkham, Colton Satterfield, Ryan Williams, Kurtis Downs, Alex Landeros, and Brandon Schmidt.

Coming to Salt Lake City, Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, July 16 and airing in primetime in the U.S. on NBC, the Nitro World Games will feature the best in extreme and action sports’ most exciting disciplines including FMX, BMX, skate, scooter and inline.

Nitro Circus, Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert and the Utah Sports Commission rocked the sports world in December 2015 when they unveiled the inaugural Nitro World Games. Created by Michael Porra and Travis Pastrana, the Nitro World Games will feature new formats and never before seen tricks. Each competition will be a final round with everything on the line, creating intensity on the track, energy in the stadium and must-see action for both digital and television viewers.

Nitro World Games is the next phase of Nitro Circus’ multi-year partnership with NBC Sports Ventures. NBC Sports will present three hours of coverage airing in primetime in the U.S. on NBC. For fans outside of the U.S. and Canada, more TV broadcast details will be announced soon (NBCUniversal International Distribution is handling the international linear and digital sales for Nitro World Games). In addition to NBC’s televised coverage, fans outside the U.S. can also watch the July 16 final on Nitro Circus’ worldwide webcast. The Nitro World Games is also a marquee destination event. Fans who want to experience the excitement in person can purchase tickets to the July 16 final. The Nitro Club VIP package is the next best thing to an all access pass at $79 per person (plus applicable service fees). These exclusive passes include the best seats in the house as well as a pre-event track walk. Nitro Club pass holders will also receive a souvenir lanyard.

The ROG Community – Beyond the Barriers

I recently wrote an article titled ‘The Slovenian Scene Report’ on BMX UNION. Reading that before this may just help you to gain more of an insight and help provide a little more context for this article, however I will try to be thorough enough for you and I to be on the same page.

On a previous trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia I fell in love with the BMX scene there, the utter dedication to their sport is unrivaled. When it comes to DIY spots, Skatepark ROG is most certainly the best one ever built. Not only is the park incredible, it is built in a place of historical importance for Ljubljana. The skatepark is built in a building that was once an old bicycle factory, the brand was called ROG – fortunately for us though, the company went bankrupt and the building was abandoned.

Shortly after, it became inhabited by some young creative souls that found a place they could call their own, something to be proud of and something to build upon. On my previous trip there I was rather inquisitive as to how they had never been evicted, as essentially the 100 inhabitants of the building are technically squatting. Rok Simsíc informed me that every year they say they will be building something new and that they need to leave but nothing has ever happened, at least not until now.

Unfortunately, ROG is currently under duress. I am no politician and my sources are that of the members of the community and some Google translated articles about what the political sphere is currently like in Ljubljana.

As it seems, a large amount of money has come Ljubljana’s way compliments of the EU. Sounds great, but the target for investing these funds is into building a creative center ‘as an experiment’ to see how a center could benefit the youth. It makes no sense to me at all, especially since ROG has already done that, the community there is not only built around a skatepark.

It is an all-encompassing center of creativity, community and learning. Various people, artists, musicians, studios and living spaces inhabit ROG. They provide free lessons to educate the youth within the area; they support refugees as well as the rest of the community by providing not only education but food too.

The night before we arrived at ROG to get our shred on, an attack by a group of mindless skinheads occurred. They don’t seem to like the fact that refugees inhabit this space, thankfully there was a limited amount of damage and all was well the next day.

The building was once quite open and easy enough to get into, but following attacks, failed demolition attempts and a touch of animosity, a barricade has been built around the entire facility, metal sheets, tires etc now form a safety net for ROG. At night people stand atop the structure and guard the place to ensure its safety. To help the community, take a second to find out more information and sign the petition – Support For ROG Factory

Now, BMX is certainly not all politics and to say everyone had a good time, would be an understatement. For me personally it was one of the best weekends of riding I have had in years.

The Salzburg crew (SBG Unit) and I arrived at ROG at around 1pm and the session never ended. The crew was pretty international, in that we had South Africans, Austrians, Slovenians and a Romanian all shredding together so it’s safe to say that everyone was throwing down. That evening after a short break from living our lives to the fullest we returned to ROG for the evenings festivities.

When the door to the club opened at 11pm (The door is next to the skatepark entrance, how convenient?) minds were blown. People packed right in to the venue complete with a stage, functioning bar and Slovenia’s top hip hop acts. A day filled with the indoor park sweats didn’t allow for much energy to party but witnessing the vibe and getting to know the riders better was a complete treat!

The next day Rok took us on a street mission and sweet lord does Slovenia have spots! How people haven’t started making tons of trips there instead of constantly bleeding Barcelona dry, completely blows my mind.

If you’re reading this, go and support ROG, let Rok educate you with his skills on a bike and then go tear apart the streets. If you don’t have a great time in the historically beautiful, meets graffiti riddled city, then you’re part of the problem. Also, if you have a similar story/scene and would like people to know about it, let me know – I would love to come hang.

June 21, 2016

salute-to-4th-bmx-contest-flyer-rochester-mn

As many of you know, every year we try and throw a big contest here in Minnesota at one of the skateparks. Last year we did two contests, one in the Winter and one on the 4th of July. After the contest on the 4th of July last year, myself and a few other locals and parents at the skatepark ended up forming a non-profit foundation to help repair and expand the local skatepark in Rochester, Minnesota. The Keep Pushing Forward Foundation was founded and we’ve been working toward our goal, which is a massive skatepark. Once again, we have teamed up with the Salute To The 4th event held by The Commission and the city of Rochester to throw another BMX and skate contest. Above is the flyer for the BMX contest that we’ll be throwing with proceeds from the event, plus donations all going toward the Keep Pushing Forward Foundation! We have a TON of great sponsors, so there will be a ton of prizes up for grabs!

The contest will be in a jam format with beginner, intermediate and expert classes. We will also be throwing a Subrosa Street Rail Jam as well! Practice and registration will kick off at 11 AM on July 4th at Silverlake Skatepark! We’ll be starting the Beginner classes (BMX followed by skate) at 1PM, Intermediate (BMX followed by skate) at 2PM, Expert at 4PM and the Street Rail Jam shortly after that wraps up!

You can PRE-REGISTER here to save yourself a few bucks — PRE-REGISTER HERE!

There will also be a silent auction and raffles to get in on as well!

Mat Hoffman – Secret Ninja Big Air Ramp GoPro Edit

June 17, 2016

Mat Hoffman reminding everyone that he has not given up on pushing his riding to the highest levels he has ever gone.

In a world of GoPro POV videos from nibbler jibbler street videos and skatepark sessions, it’s always rad to see something really crazy from somebody’s point of view. Last year we caught up with Mat Hoffman for an interview where we first found out about the massive ramp that Danny Way had built and Mat was riding, and calling the Secret Ninja Big Air Ramp. Since that day we’ve been anxiously waiting to see the footage from it. Thanks to X Games, we’ve been seeing some of the footage over the course of the week. Below you can find links to the 3 videos they released.

Mat Hoffman – The Quest For High Air

Danny Way – The Quest For High Air

The Quest For High Air – Reflections

We figured that was all the footage from it… Then this morning we woke up to an email from the Condor himself with a link to a video he put together from some of the GoPro footage he collected during his sessions. This has footage from some of the first runs all the way up until the crash that obliterated his collarbone. Needless to say, after watching this we’re still completely blown away by just how big Mat has gone! This is an absolute MUST SEE. The big brother of the Secret Ninja Ramp is an absolute monster of a ramp.

WATCH: More Mat Hoffman Videos!

“Here is my DIY edit I made riding Danny’s ramp. No interviews, I used a POV and then placed a few unmanned GoPro’s around and let them shoot continuously while I rode. This is my original edit I’ve been holding onto for about a year. It’s not the best quality; I just shot it to document the ride, since I went out their solo. Then Stew and Alyssa added to it for the recent posts on X Games, so I’ve kept this one out of sight until now.
