Pat Fisher sent over the 4th installment of the “Foundations of Style” podcast for your viewing pleasure. This time around, the focus is more on bikes and how they can have an affect on the way we ride, progress, etc. Hit play and take it in.

“Issue four of the “Foundations of Style” series examines the relationship between the bikes we ride and how we ride them. From the individual scale of how we limit ourselves by using products for only their advertised purpose, to the global scale of how wealth distribution determines what technology is utilized where, this analysis reveals the socioeconomic bias of BMX’s linear progress narrative and shows how it serves to actively marginalize alternative riding styles and those riders creating them.

“Issue three of the “Foundations of Style” series examines the relationship between our bodies and the styles of movement we develop. When looked at on a social scale, we can see that today’s mainstream riding styles are reflections of BMX’s past social relations, and that BMX’s cultural values and participant demographics are functioning to mutually perpetuate their narrow ranges.

Building Gnarnia – “Thriving In Decay”

July 1, 2015

Pat Fisher sent through his BMX and skateboarding documentary called “Thriving In Decay” that is a 20 minute video where he talks about the history of BMX and skateboarding which is actually pretty interesting. Some of you newer guys could probably learn quite a few things from this video. The riding and everything isn’t really all too serious, but still, it’s a rad video to check out.

“Interweaving movement and narrative, “Thriving in Decay” examines the relationship between large-scale cycles of decay and the historical development of BMX and skateboarding. Having a solid understanding of how BMX and skateboarding have been influenced in the past is crucial for their development in the future, since popular over-simplifications can easily lead participants astray from addressing those factors which matter most…

This film is just one part to the larger Building Gnarnia project. Check out BuildingGnarnia.com for more videos, articles, and a peak at the full-length book.
