Insight: Proper – Wedge Stem

May 14, 2013

Proper BMX Stem

Over the years, stem technology has changed up pretty drastically. They’ve gone from these blocks of alloy steel that had 6 (sometimes 8!) bolts in them to keep your bars and fork connected while holding that headset in place all the way down to these crazy CNC machined to the max stems with one bolt holding it all together. It just goes to show how much innovation has come to a part like a stem over BMX’s fairly short history. A few weeks back, the guys at Proper Bike Co. let me in on a wedge based stem system that’s been in the works for a couple a years now. After being put on the back burner for a while, they’ve finally designed something they’re totally happy with and are getting the test results they want in order to really give it that Proper stamp of approval. All though the stem won’t be out for a few months, we figured it would be cool to give you guys a sneak peek at both versions of this stem and find out what really went into the making of it. This is what Jamie over a Proper had to say… Let’s take a closer look!

Wes McGrath Photography BMX

BMX is a crazy thing. If you really pay attention, it can lead you to some incredible places and some incredible people. I can’t remember the first time I saw Wes McGrath’s name pop up, but if you remember the BIO edit we dropped featuring him a few months back, that was when I really started taking notice of him, his riding and his photography.
Then, a little while back, Mark Noble and I were talking about a feature we were working on, and the photo for the feature was shot by Wes. It was a rad photo and it definitely was the tipping point to where I needed to get ahold of the dude to take a closer look at his photography work and find out more about it. Luckily, we were able to get in contact with him and we started working on this new Photos: interview along with an incredible PHOTOGALLERY to accompany it.
I know Wes’ work has appeared in a few places before, but I honestly don’t think that many people understand how good it really is, so take a little time to check out this interview and then take a closer work at his work in the photogallery. You won’t be disappointed!

Through The Lens: Company Check – Volume and Demolition

May 8, 2013

TTL_64_opener_600x

When a BMX company has been around for fourteen years you have to figure that they are doing something right. That was my exact thought when planning the next company to feature for the column and that is why I chose Volume and Demolition. Also because Brian Castillo is a dedicated, hard-working person who constantly pushes BMX in a positive direction. He multi-tasks like no other and still finds time in his day to shred. He rides BMX simply because he loves it, and helped take a dream and make it a reality which is something most people will never do. It takes an incredible amount of drive to run multiple BMX companies for over a decade but he handles it with a small crew working alongside. I made my way down to the offices recently to hang out for the day, shoot some photos and talk to Castillo about what it takes to make it all happen.

Jon Saunders Interview

May 2, 2013

Over the last few months, you guys have probably noticed that we have been doing a lot with the all trails website, Can You Dig It. It was one of the websites that we partnered with at the beginning of the year, and anyone who checks the site on the regular knows it’s the go to place for anything trails related. The website is run by a guy named Jon Saunders who has been digging and riding for years and has a huge appreciation for the art and hard work involved in trails riding and BMX in general. I figured by now a bunch of you are wondering what this dude with a shovel is all about, so I tossed him a bunch of questions to find out more about the guy behind Can You Dig It. Let’s take a look at what he had to say!

Through The Lens: Making Moves with Broc Raiford

May 1, 2013

TTL_63_Opener_600x

What would you do to follow your dreams? Would you wake up one morning and plan a move across the country? Would you leave home in hopes of pursuing a career doing what you love? Well, regardless of what you may or may not do, while you are still sitting there thinking about it there are people out there like Broc Raiford making moves. I’ve been doing this whole thing long enough now to where I have seen riders go from young up-and-comers just trying to make a name for themselves to some of the top pros in the game. Broc is on his way to fitting himself into that category. His bike control is blatantly obvious when he rides and he has the type of personality that will take him far. He recently made the move out West to California in hopes of pushing his BMX riding to a new level and I have absolutely no doubt that being here will do just that. He knows what he wants out of life, has the work ethic that it takes to be successful and did I mention that he kills it on a bike? Get familiar with Broc, find out about the move, and see what he has planned for the rest of the year and more right here.

The End of an Era: Matt Beringer’s House and Backyard

April 29, 2013

Union_Beringer_Opener_600x

For the past twelve years there has been a BMX backyard of epic proportions located in Layton, Utah. Sure, it didn’t start out as one of the most historic backyards ever built but over the course of time, and thanks to the support of the home-owner it has surely built up a reputation all its own. The owner is none-other than S&M Bikes pro and legend Matt Beringer. Matt is a character that is actually just as unique as his backyard and that is part of the reason why his yard has become a go-to destination for BMX riders from all over the world. Needless to say, it’s been twelve years of good times and it’s all coming to a close as Matt needs to make some decisions on whether or not to try and keep the house. He is at the point where it’s getting to be more stress than it’s worth for him to keep up on without any support so he posted on his Facebook about putting the house up for sale soon. But first, he wanted to let everyone know that it is up for grabs shred-ready and as-is for $200,000. For any companies looking to invest in an amazing team house this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Located a half an hour out of Salt Lake City, Utah with neighbors that already know the deal and a yard that is ride-able as we speak it would be amazing to see a company step in and take it over. I caught up with Matt to break things down, fill everyone in on the exact details and let him speak his mind on the subject.

Dan Kruk Interview

April 25, 2013

BMX Dan Kruk

Ah… BMX Dan. This is one kid I met a few years back and I’ve watched develop from a pretty quiet kid who was pretty good on a bike to a full blown man child that can toss the bars like the best and isn’t scared to send it on anything you put in front of him. There are a lot of stories that come to mind when I think about different times I’ve crossed paths with Dan. Some of the stories are pretty hilarious and probably not ideal to share in an intro. All I’ll say is he has definitely taken his fair amount of shit from some of the finest in the Midwest which has molded him into the kid he is today. After joining the knee club and making a full recovery and getting a ton of travel time in, Dan was bumped up to the Madera flow team last week. We figured it was time to get to introduce this up and comer from the Milwaukee scene to you guys. Let’s take a look at what he had to say.

Jeff Kocsis Interview

April 22, 2013

Photo: Greg Pallante

Jeff Kocsis is one of those guys who has always been a rider I get stoked on seeing fresh footage of. Over the years, he’s definitely progressed into an amazing rider and managed to keep that low-key kind of image that I think has always been something that a lot of riders respect. Over the last few months he’s been given the bump to the Macneil and Almond Footwear pro teams along with his long time sponsor, Animal which has allowed him to really focus more on riding. I figured with that and all of the traveling he has been doing lately, he was over due for an interview. I got ahold of him the other day to get to know this guy who not only kills it on a bike, but appreciates a hard days work. Let’s see what he had to say…
