Tim Oliver Interview

March 16, 2008

Tim is a guy who I recently met through an indoor park I ride at due to winter. I remember hearing stories of him doing ceiling ride flips and all sorts of other stuff from friends who have met him over the years. Since then I think we have become pretty good friends and hes always a super good guy to ride with, really surprises me when he decides to throw down. Tim deserved this interview and I think you will enjoy this.

Name:
Tim Oliver

Location:
faribault,mn

Sponsors:
to die for clothing, crusty demons clothing, boogieman brigade fmx.

Job:
full time factory crap.

Your a Minnesota legend, how many years have you been on a BMX for?
I started riding around 1990 but really got into it about 93.

You used to do demos with Chaos On Wheels, how did that all start and what did you think of it?
well my days with chaos started out back in 2000. I was at the mankato park just riding and Jeremiah Anderson(the owner of chaos on wheels) came up to me and asked me about a sticker I had on my bike that said real men love Jesus. he asked me if I was a christian and I said yes and we sorta hit it off and a few weeks after that he called and asked me if I wanted to do a show, and I said yes for sure I would. and that was it. I started doing every show I could. ill tell ya doing shows with chaos was some of the best years of my life. I met so many good people and saw so many new places I probably would have never got a chance to see.

Your pretty dialed, what are some of your favorite tricks?
hahaha I don’t see myself as a dialed rider. I simply love to ride and there is a few tricks i got down good I guess. I love doing big superman seat grabs. flips are always fun. and big suicide no handers.

What is one trick you cannot do for the life of you?
360 whips I have tried that trick off and on for like 14 years.

Word on the street is you used to do half flip ceiling ride half flip out over the box at Mankato back in the day?
hahaya ya I did a couple of those. the first time was by total mistake I just went too fast and the ceilings are really low at mankato’s park. so I went for a flip and the next thing I know both wheels are on the ceiling so I just pulled as hard as I could and ended up landing it. every one there went nuts it was so scary but I just told everyone I tried to do it. hahaha but than i figured if I did it once i could do it again so i dropped in and went for it and did it again next try. it was sweet but that’s it, it’s never happened again.

Where can you typically be seen riding?
I ride at the renegade skate park in faribault. I live about 5 blocks from the park so im there a lot.

Whats it like to have a skatepark so close that lets you put so much input into it?
It’s awesome mike Carlson (the owner) is such a good guy I got to know him and his family good. he doesnt know anything about bikes so when he needs something he usually asked me for my input.

What do you think of the Minnesota scene as a whole?
well as a whole I think the mn scene is good there is so much talent here in MN. Ive watched a lot of guys come up and they all rip. I’m proud to be from MN.

Where are some of the places you have been able to travel over the years from BMX?
Before I started touring I had only Been to like 4 states and now there is like 4 states I haven’t been to. I have ridden so many different parks I cant even keep count.

Where are some places you would like to go that you haven’t?
well I would love to get up to Canada and go to NYC to go street riding besides that I’m content.

Who were some of your biggest riding influences over the years?
first and foremost jay schlie. that’s the guy that really helped me fall in love with bmx. I saw the love he had and I wanted that. so thank you jay love ya bro. and I would say tom haugan for sure. tom is a great guy. he is a very humble guy. I remember I went to a contest and was watching him ride and just blew me away. I was soooo intimidated by him. thinking this guy is so good he will never even know im here. well I was way wrong. he came write up to me and started talking to me. and we have Ben friends ever since. and lets see. all the chaos on wheels guys. jermiah, frank, travis, aj, donny, sean. I spent 8 years of my life with them they are like family.

Where do you look for inspiration now days?
wow that a good one. I would have to say my family. my son Noah is always at the park with me rippin around on his little razor scooter. my step son Damon skates. so those to keep me young. I don’t know i guess i just love to be on my bike. weather its doing a manual down the street or going street riding or the park. i just enjoy every day i can ride.

What do you think of the riding level of today compared to back in the day?
kids today are fricken nuts!!!! back in the day a flip was huge and not a lot of people did tailwhips. but today a kid will get a bike for his birthday go to a skate park and learn a flip in 5 min. its not fair haha I had to learn that stuff the old fashioned way. you build a dirt jump and just Huck yourself.

You have so much going on, how do you still find time to ride?
I will always make time to ride. riding is what keeps me sane. not only is my bike fun but its a huge stress reliever and right now more than ever in my life I need a little stress relief

What is your favorite memory from BMX?
one of my favorite memories was the day I met tom haugan. there was a dirt jumping contest in this park and me and some friends showed up to check it out. and some how tom found out I did flips and the next thing I know tom was yelling for people to stop what they were doing to watch me flip. and if I remember correctly i broke my crank first flip out. and I just remember tom invited us to come to there house to have a box jump session and I was so mad I could ride but tom invited us back up to ride again. man those days were fun.

What are some riding videos you have always really liked?
i love the mad Matt video and some of the old fbm videos

What are some bands you are into?
I like a lot of music the new august burns red is good. actually right now its all johnny cash and billy Joel.

What are some of your favorite websites?
I would like to tell ya i don’t have a myspace but i do and im on there way too much. and Interbmx.com site. and our fmx page brigadefmx.com

You also do some freestyle motocross, when did you get into that?
about 3 years ago. its just another step up from bmx. I love the adrenelaine. I don’t do any kind of drugs at all and never have. so I guess im looking for that high and let me tell ya there is no bigger rush than hitting a 10ft tall lip 3 gear pinned and jumping over 100ft.

What is the biggest difference between that and BMX for you?
just the jumping. I love to ride Mini ramps on my bmx. there is none of that on a mx bike. its all about jumping and how big you can get your tricks.

What is your worst injury from either BMX or FMX?
I broke my back in 3 spots and was almost paralyzed. it was a rough time. besides that just the typical concussions(9) and bruzes.
I broke my foot and wrist on my dirtbike thats it I have gotten really lucky.

Rumor has it you have some plans to try some backflips on the dirtbike this summer?
ya I was one of the first guys to flip bmx in mn if not the first so I want to do the same with the mx bike.

Outside of riding and everything what are you into?
I do MMA(cage fighting) I have done this for about 4 years now it is a lot of work and a lot of fun. i think its that adrenelaine thing again.haha i love hanging with my family and going to hardcore and metal shows. thats it.

You just had another baby boy, hows that going?
wow I forgot how exhausting it is I have gotten 4 hours of sleep in two days. ya its time to go ride.

If you never picked up a bike, what do you think you would be doing?
that’s hard to say. I love music so maybe sing or play in a band. I don’t know I guess I feel like bmx saved my life. I was a trouble maker before I got into riding. who knows I might not be here right now.

You have an interview with the local news in Fairbult coming out, how did that all come about?
I don’t know I just came to the park to ride one day and there was a name and # to call and next thing ya know I’m on the phone telling this guy my life story. It actually comes out this friday and they did a good job.

What is it like to have these interviews coming after all this time?
It feels really good. It always feels good to be complemented on what you love to do. I’m 30 years old and I still have some skills to make people pay a little attention. It feels good.

What are some things you would like to experience in your life you haven’t had a chance to yet?
oh man i have lived a good life so far I have already done so much probably more than most people will ever do in there life time. I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’ll take it day by day and see what life has for me.

What are some things your looking forward to for 08′?
just being a good dad to my kids and being the best person I can. I want to be a positive influence to kids coming up and just enjoy life.

If you could spend the day with anybody, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I would spend it with my dad. he passed when I was younger and I would want to show him all i have accomplished. I think he would be proud.

Your a cagefighter eh? When did you get into that?
ya it’s ben about 4 years now I did some training at the American school of martial arts. and have had some good fights and than I have had some bad ones to haha. I dont want to go anywhere with it its just a hobby a some times pain full hobby.

You have some pretty sweet tattoos, do they have any meaning or just more because they look cool?
no they all have meaning to them some are related to straight edge and my religion. the way I see it I’m only on this earth for so long so I’m going to
enjoy my time here no regrets. I got way more tattoos to come.

If you couldn’t live in Minnesota anymore, where would you go and why?
I think I would head to the west coast. so cal. I have some good friends that live out there. and Calli is the meca for bmx and fmx so when I’m done riding I could still be around the sports I love.

What kind of advice do you have for kids just getting into BMX?
first and foremost you need to ride for yourself you need to enjoy riding. don’t worry about trying to turn pro and make a ton of money. all that will come in time if you want it to. and just never forget why you picked up that bike in the first place. for the love to ride that’s it.

If you could change one thing about BMX what would it be and why?
The girl pants have to go!!!! I don’t know its so crazy to me how far the sport has come in the past 10 years. I don’t know if I would change anything its a fun ride.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
I want to thank you for taking the time out to do this interview. and all the people i have ridden with over the years you all know who you are. my wife amy and my kids. jay s ,tom h, frank s, and there is so many more but I’m cant remember I have had 9 concussions haha. any one that rides for the love of bmx I thank you.

Anything else you would like to add I forgot?
no I think we are good to go. now lets go ride.

Sandy Carson Interview

March 6, 2008

The first time I met Sandy was at an Etnies demo at Jellystone in Wisconsin, They were filming for the video “Why didn’t we do this before? tour.” That was one of the craziest days I have experienced, and Sandy has always been a rider I have looked at as influential so it was even craizer to meet the guy. Since then hes always been friendly over E-mail and everything which I am even surprised about. Finally got an interview with him for you.

Also after this, go check out Sandy’s Website for more pictures!

Name:
sandy carson

Current Location:
Austin TX

Sponsors:
Etnies and T1

Years riding:
25

When was your first time you really knew BMX was meant to be your thing?
When I was a wee boy,it felt to be doing something different with my life other than football and I could pedal away from trouble makers faster than running.

You have been in the game for many years, did you expect to be able to live your life doing it?
Definitely not. It was just a mixture of luck and being at the right place at the right time and doing my best at what I loved.

Who was your very first sponsor, how did it come about?
It was a small Art clothing company called ‘Ceramic Rabbit’ that my buddy Tim ran. He used to do Street jams in London and I would go to them and it sorta snowballed from there. As far as a frame sponsor, it was Standard Bykes. I came to the States in ’93 and met those dudes at the BS comp in Shimmerville, PA. Then 2 years later moved to Iowa to the Standard house and got on the team.

What was your first bike?
My first bmx bike was A BH California Star!(Euro brand)

What is your current set up like?
T1 custom garrett with Fly and profile parts.

Have you always had a pretty similar set up or has it changed over the years?
I used to ride a 50 pound Bike in the Standard days with 2 brakes, 4 pegs, a gyro, 6 piece bars, a free coaster and even a break bastard. WTF!! Now I have one brake and no pegs, so it’s gone full circle and looks more like my first bike!

You have been able to travel all over, where do you think your favorite place to ride is?
That’s a tough one . I think here in Austin to tell you the truth. I can ride every terrain I want by just pedaling out of my house. It’s a really convenient city which I am lucky to live in, and don’t need to sit in traffic.

Living in Austin, Texas which has an amazing scene.. Where do you usually ride?
I just pedal about aimlessly by myself on my BMX bike or my track bike.

Who are some of your usual guys you ride with?
Pretty much by myself or whoever I’m shooting these days since I don’t have much free time to just ride around anymore.

Over the years you have had some really good video parts, which ones were your favorite?
I think they all have their moments, and are representative of my state of riding in those points of my career. Standard Style Cats was one of my faves since it was my first. Federal’s Trafaelio was great too. I liked both the Etnies dvd’s too. It’s more nostalgia to me watching them and brings back memories of where and when I filmed them.

What do you think of the current state of bmx from both sides, contests and just riding?
I don’t know and I don’t care. I don’t follow this kind of stuff anymore.it’s all about pedaling around and having fun these days. the way it should be.

Do you have any new video parts coming anytime soon?
Nah. Not in the near future. I think I’m done hurtin my body and have nothing to prove anymore. Who knows. If I do, it won’t be in the traditional sense. Hopefully it’ll be goofing around with some sort creative direction other than trick trick trick.

What is one trick you have struggled with the most?
Turndowns. you either have that trick or you don’t!

If you were only able to do one trick for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Table tops. They feel the best and won’t hurt your body

Outside of riding your a photographer, Did you go to school at all or was it mostly self-taught?
It’s mostly self taught. I hate reading manuals and stuff. I’m more of a practical guy and get out there an learn by trial and error. I spent a lot of money learning the hard way with film…

What kind of gear do you work with the most?
Still a lot of film cameras.(nikon and hasselblad) What a sucker! It means more to me and It’s how I learned. and i’m comfortable with it. I use Digi a lot too for work and reportage stuff which makes perfect sense on quick turn around and easy on your wallet.

Do you have that dream camera you have yet to get your hands on?
A leica M6, or a large format camera set up.

What are you favorite things to shoot?
Mostly documentary stuff. but I enjoy it all, Music, BMX, people etc.

You have a lot of photos on your site of random people, what do you like about that?
I love it. Having a camera gives me a good excuse to spark a conversation with someone random , listen to their story and hopefully snap a picture.

Rider wise, who is your favorite people to work with?
Usually people that I know somewhat first, and will have the patience to let me set up my gear. Riders who will do something a few times so I get different angles. Anyone that’s creative and pedaling fast. Definately not using their bike a scooter at 2mph. That’s not bike riding.

Because of photography you have travelled the world, where are some of the places you have been in the last few years?
South Africa, Japan, Mexico, Eastern Europe, Mainland Europe, North Americas, Texas!

Out of all of the places you have ever been, if you were only allowed to be one place for the rest of your life, where and why?
Hopefully somewhere remote when my Lady graduates as a doctor and I can work on my photo projects and be a good house husband/ kittie’s daddy.

If you could spend the day with anybody, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
Probably my Mum. I don’t get to see that crazy old bat enough!

What is your perfect day?
A sunday with my phone turned off and doing absolutely nothing but sitting on my porch with the lady watching the cats play in the front yard. So emo!

What are some of your favorite websites?
fecalface.com, flicker.com, kfmrecords.com, craigslist.com, lemonoparty.com

What are some of the magazines and places somebody can find your work?
Austin Chronicle, Dig Bmx Magazine, Hambuger Eyes, JPG mag.

Outside of riding and photography, what are some things you are into?
Playing in a music project I am involved in with some friends from Scotland. www.myspace/iglomat haging out in my shed listening to cassette tapes.

What kind of music are you into?
Pretty much everything really.

Who or what are some of your biggest influences in your life?
Scotland. My Mum and Grandparents, Comedy, Music, Bikes and travel, humour, documentation.

According to your website, it says you were stabbed, how did that all happen?
Just close minded kids in a rough area with nothing else to do but to stab people. It’s common practice amoungst the angst ridden unemployed youth of Scotland. It’s like a medal of honour.

Any close calls since then?
No, knock on wood.

What are some things all people should experience in their life?
Travel to third world countries. Independent thinking. Living by yourself without a trust fund.

What kind of advice do you have for people just getting into BMX?
Pedal fast and far away from drama.

What kind of advice do you have for people getting into photography?
Shoot as much as possible and shoot everything till you feel comfortable and figure out what you like to shoot. Get your pictures out there as much as possible. read plenty of books by the masters. Practice practice practice…dial it in and get your own style.

If you could change one thing about BMX what would it be and why?
Drama.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Thanks to Kurt for the interview! Thanks to my lady and cats, Thanks to Povahand Don Brown at Etnies, Joe, Taj and Sieben at T1, my family and friends in Scotland and in Austin.

Nathan Williams Interview

March 4, 2008

Nathan Williams has blown up lately, and there is no question as to why. I remember a few months back myself and Todd were talking about people to interview and Nathan had come up, then a few people asked me to on the messages, so finally after a while I got in contact with Nathan and we got a solid interview for you to enjoy! Check it out! Also after that check out the United site for all the photos and updates from Austrailia, there is some awesome stuff there. Most of the pictures in this interview are from the Austrailia Trip.

Name:
Nathan Williams

Location:
Nashville, TN

Sponsors:
United, Primo, Levis, Beloe, Dans

As I write this you are down in Austrailia, How is it or How was it? What was your favorite part of the trip?
Australia was amazing. Everybody there is so chill and just kind of whatever about everything so that makes for a pretty good time! Favorite part about the trip was hanging around the kangas for a day.

What is it like to be able to go to the other side of the world because you ride a bike?
Very strange.I never imagined I would actually go any of these places. I feel very blessed!

Do you have any signature parts or anything coming out from United anytime soon?
Yeah, were working ona bar right now. Not to sure when it should be out though.

Your on Beloe, how did that all come about, do you have any signature shoes or color ways coming out?
Well, I have known Brian for a while just because he would come down to Nashville a lot when he was working for Duffs and a few months ago he called me up and talked to me about his ideas for a shoe company and asked me to be apart of it. We have talked briefly about some it but there is not really anything set in stone right now as far as signature shoes or anything.

2007 was a huge year for you and you and BMX, you were in the DVD nobody special… now your obviously not nobody, what’s that like?
Umm, well to be honestI don’t really know. I still feel the same as I did back when we filmed for that. As far as coverage and all that goes I guess I just don’t think about that stuff much. I mean in the end its really all about having fun on your bike.

A few years ago did you ever think you could be where you are now?
Not in a million years! haha.

You ride street like a champ, and you can blast quarters big, What do you prefer to ride more?
Well I go back and forth. If I ride street everyday for two weeks I start craving to ride some tranny but if I ride a park for to long I start craving street. A good combination of it all is good really.

If you could only do one trick what would it be and why?
Footjams. There is something about doing a really steep, boned out footjam that is the best!

What is one trick that you cannot do for the life of you?
Flipwhips… I just don’t get it. Everybody else can do them!! haha

Who are some of the pros you looked up to growing up?
Van Homan, Seth Kimbrough, Corey Martinez, Brian Terada… there are so many

Has that changed at all now that your in the big leagues?
haha, I don’t know if I would say I’m in the big leagues but no it hasn’t really changed. I still look up to all of those dudes so much!

Outside of BMX what are some of the things you are into?
Music, skateboarding (even though i’m horrible at it), and just chillin with good friends..

Your pretty big into music, what are some of your favorite bands, do you know of any unknown artists people should check out?
Sufjan Stevans, the arcade fire, bob dylan, Clap your hands say yeah… there are too many. Yeah here’s a few good unknown bands like AC/DC, Led Zeplin, Rolling Stones… haha

What are some of your favorite movies riding and non riding wise?
Well I just recently saw the new Ride movie called Insight and that was really good. Also the skateboarding video called Lakai Fully Flaired is epic… it gets me so psyched to ride everytime I watch it. The only real movie though I have seen lately that I really enjoyed was Juno.

If you could be sponsored by any companies outside of BMX companies, who and why?
I don’t really know,Probly some crazy world wide grocery store that gave me free food every month. Or Apple haha

What do you think you would be doing if you never picked up a bike?
Probly working a lot and going to a lot of shows or skateboarding….

You have had the chance to travel a fair amount lately, where are some of your favorite places you have been?
Well, I have had the opportunity to go to England, Spain, Germany and Australia.

Where would you like to go that you haven’t?
Rome or South Africa

Do you have any big trips planned for 08′ other than the Austrailia trip you just took?
There are a few trips planned Levis to Barcelona and maybe Croatia but thats not for sure yet.

Who or what are some of the biggest influences on your life?
God, no telling where I would be without Him. My parents, all of my family, friends.

If you could spend the day with anybody alive or dead, who would it be and why?
Mr. Lenard Schulte(my grandfather)

What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
Continue to ride my bike, stay healthy, move to a new city for a while, meet new people… keep things fresh and new I guess.

What kind of advice do you have for people just getting into BMX?
Just have fun and don’t worry about what everybody else is doing. Do what you have fun doing.

If you could change anything about BMX what would it be and why?
The only thing that sticks out in my mind would be all the hating on everything that goes on, on the internet. Other than that I love it!

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
God, my parents, all my friends, Ian and Dean at United, Nate and Barney at Primo, Brian at Beloe, Kathy at Levis,Ernesto at Dans

Anything else I forgot you would like to add?
Nope,I think that covers it haha

Resolve DVD Info

February 29, 2008

So I posted up the trailer for the Resolve Road Trip DVD. I said I would get more information on it for you guys so here it is.

Name of DVD:
RESOLVE

Whose making this DVD:
Me [ant barrett]

Is there any other people helping with the filming and editing?
nope. i’m a one man show, that way i can be a total control freak, i’m a perfectionist, so if shots or edits aren’t up to scratch, well….i’m my own worst critic!

What kind of camera gear and editing programs are you working with?
currently working with adobe premier pro cs3, after effects cs3, photoshop cs3 – are you noticing a theme here?.. – and panasonic cameras.

Who all will be in this dvd?
eric holley (eastern bmx) kelly bolton (eastern bmx) mark theaker (eastern bmx uk) toby gresswell (eastern bmx uk) and shaun eglington (gt hotwheels uk vert), they were the main guys on the trip but obviously loads of talented locals are on as well.

Where are you going for this road trip?
already been on the trip – uk (corby, peterborough, bar hill, bristol, the track and mt.hawke skatepark in cornwall)

When did filming start?
2006

How much longer are you filming for?
one more competition in cornwall (uk) and then i should be done.

What is going to make this video stand out from the rest?
obviously roadtrip dvds have been done, but my style of editing and production comes through, so not only do you have sick riding, you have a video that looks really nice too – production value i guess haha…wait and see! haha.

Where will people be able to get this once it is released?
working on setting up a site at the moment to sell the dvd from and also promote other projects i may be working on in the future…. more about that when its sorted!

What do you expect it to cost?
ten pounds if you’re in england, dunno what that is in $? $18? you tell me?
I believe it is almost $20

Is there any clips you can let us in on so far?
just the teaser trailer on the myspace and on youtube – the rest is secret!

Is there a website or anywhere to find more information?
just the myspace at the moment i’m afraid – www.myspace.com/resolvevideo

Anything else you can tell us I didn’t think to ask?
nothing other than a big thank you for your interest in the project, and spread the word. resolve will be landing later this year.
thanks guys! ant [editing, videography]

February 23, 2008

Full name:
Brian Oestreich

age:
24

location:
St. Paul, Mn

Just grew up with a bunch of kids that loved to mess around. Bikes were usually involved and it eventually became an addiction to ride.

how long have you been riding?
roughly 12 yrs

who or what are the major influences in your riding?
Music kinda influences me. otherwise i just kinda pick up on things i think look neato and try to add it to the how i ride.

uhmm i dunno. really quick jerky movements and whips off of weird obstacles. thats about it.

whats up with girl pants yo?
haha oh god. srsly? havnt worn a pair in a looooong time. used to be fun. but i grew out of it. fitted guy pants are the way to go nowadays. much more comfy:)

what is your favorite trick and why?
whips, and barspins. basicaly the bad ass tricks haha. i like them cause its fun to try to do them on odd things.

what type of riding terrain suits you best?
really flowy park. and street

Dinkytown mcdonalds and the U of M campus on a weekend night when all the partiers are out. Ive had the best nights just chillin in front of mcdonals with mark riding curbs haha

do you have any major plans for your bmx life?
nope not really. just to do it as long as im physically able.

75 degree day. partly cloudy. drivin on a curvy road in an evo9. and then riding my bike at a cement park all evening.

what is your most memorable biking experience?
G-shock.

how on earth did you come up with your nickname shwang twong?
You can thank my friend Mike for that one. Up until he said that my only nickname was B.O. but one day he was being his normal weird self and was saying B.O. over and over again in a jingle sorta and then added the word shwangtwong in there. and it stuck. nothing exciting.

BMXperception.com

February 21, 2008

There is a new website that is just getting underway, if you are firmiliar with the website SkatePerception.com you will understand what this website is. Basically the guys who run that have started up a BMX version for us all to be apart of. I figured I would ask them a few questions about the website and what to expect. Here is what he had to say.

What is bmxperception all about?
BMX Perception is a media discussion forum targeted at the filming, photography and design community within bmx.

How did you come up with the idea?
Well it was kind of in the works for a long time. Other people had shown interest in starting up a site geared in the bmx media direction but no one stepped up. A few months ago Steve LaClair emailed me about his idea for starting it. I was more than thrilled to be a part of it.

You also run some other sites, what are those?
Steve LaClair and Mike Holm are the creators of the Perception Media Network. The Other site are SkatePerception.com and SnowPerception.com. As far as myself and other sites, I’m part of the content team for News-Record.com, which is the news paper for Greenboro, NC. I’m a video producer for online content.

What would the ideal thing you want to come from this site?
Skateperception was obviously a huge hit, and has been around for a while. I’ve been a member of that site for some years now and it does a lot of great things for the skateboard media community. And i think that BMX Perception is something that the bmx community has had the need for a long time. I just want to have an educated media community to hopefully help others out that are just starting. I feel its such a rewarding experience to be able to help out up and comers and give them a chance to show their perception on bmx.

How can people sign up?
Get on the internet and type in BMXPerception.com/forums and click on sign up.

What is the difference between this forum and all of the other forums?
The other perception media forums are geared towards skateboarding and snow. There are quite a few members of skateperception that are bmx’ers, and its funny because most of them kept it undercover most the time. it was surprising to get pm’s from people saying, “hey i ride bmx too”. Most of the skateperception community was pretty open about things. I and a few other risk takers would post up bmx stuff every now and again. Some members would be into, and well, some weren’t. But BMXperception.com gives us a place to focus on bmx media.

What does the future hold for BMXPerception.com?
Well if you look at SkatePerception.com you’ll see it has more of a front end site with videos and news and stuff. We are working on getting all that up and going but we wanted to get the forums going off the bat. BMXPerception.com will be your come to place for bmx media in the future.

Corey Bohan Interview

February 20, 2008

Everyone knows who Corey is, if you don’t… well your sick chubs. He is an amazing rider and super chill guy. This interview turned out awesome..

Name:
Corey Bohan

Corona CA

Sponsors:
Giant bikes, RedBull, DC shoes, Fox, Duo and Mosh

Years riding:
10

It would appear your livin the good life! How is Austrailia and when do you come back to the states?
Life is good right now. I been in aus for a few months..just spending quality family time and surfing my local breaks and riding my bike. I come home every year. Im back in CA by March each year to get back to business and have fun back there.

What is it like to be able to surf in February while the rest of us are freezing our asses off?
For me ive known nothing but summer. Australia’s winters are very mild and u can surf all year round in shorts and a T. I have never experienced a full on white winter so maybe one day i will know how that feels…as for now i will just keep skipping from summer to summer.

How are things going with Giant, do you have a signature frame or anything with them coming out?
Giant has been so kick arse its not even funny. they have been behind me 100% since i signed and its been just goodtimes. I have a frame out this year….its been a slow process mainly cause im not really motivated too get shit going hahaha. The frame is dope..i been riding it for the last year and have made a few little changes for 08 but the bikes should be out and about this year.

How about your other sponsors anything signature?
Duo does cool shit and our whole team works on different stuff. Duo brought out a 5950 new era hat for me as a gift and i got to design it all so that was cool. Im workign on other stuff such a grips and things so keep an eye out.

It seems like your everywhere these days, where have you been recently?
Its been quite a busy end of year thats forsure……one month i was in Berlin, then i was back in CA, then it was off to fiji and then i made a trip back to aus where ive been traveling around a whole bunch as well..when your busy time flys….but u will always remember the goodtimes.

What are your plans for 2008?
Umm progress a bit, heading on road fools in april, Ride a lot more street, surf, travel……just keep on having as much fun as possible.

Will we see a lot more of you at the park contests along with the dirt finally?
Its all depends if i qualify, sometimes the dew tour prelims for park can just be a nightmare, courses and long days…..im gonna try ride the opens and see how it goes…so who knows….im not too concearned if i dont make the cut.

Plenty of medals and nora cups, what else do you want to accomplish in the next few years?
Im more than happy with how bmx has turned out for me….i think i just wanna go new places and ride new stuff. Its all about having fun and thats all i really wanna do. I have a full length part coming out in a new dvd called “Holiday” it will be avaible everywhere so im excited to work on more video parts for the future.

You have some really amazing style, did you race as a kid or anything or is it natural?
Thanks a lot. I raced for a few weeks but nothing too serious…i grew up near a bmx track back home here so i would just ride it every now and again.

If you could ride only one place for the rest of your life where would it be and why?
I would say back here in aus….that way if im not riding i could just go surf haha.

What are your favorite tricks to do or see?
A good invert will not be beat. Too see i would say a 360 invert. I love doing 360 one foot flats.

What is a trick you cannot do for the life of you?
I would say a no footed x-up lol.

What are some new tricks you are working on?
Im working on this one trick its called “win the dew tour” haha just fucking round……i dont know what i wanna learn….something that you dont see over and over again or already been done…i will try come up with something creative and different. I’ll let you know when i get it.

What contest are you looking forward to more, elevation or empire?
This is an awesome question…..these are the only 2 contest i wanna do really good at….im looking forward them both a lot!

Do you have any information that dirt half pipe contest red bull had in the works?
Yep, its been pushed back but its still going too happen. dates are being worked out so that it can be an event where everyone is avaible too attend. Ive seen pics of the actually site and the progress already looks fuckin rad.

A few years ago before you were able to make it over here from Austrailia, did you ever expect it to go as well as it has for you?
Def couldnt expect any of it. I worked an apprentiship with my dad for his construction company and i just went over to travel and ride…..i came home with some good result from some random comps and got hooked up with some spono’s. It was a dream come true and i was fuckin siked.

Is there something in the water in Austrailia? It seems like theres just unbelievable riders over there!
haha yeah its called beer & jack daniles lol. Its complete madness that there is this many doing so well. Aus has a bunch of talent and it just so happens that a good handful have done well.

Jack Daniels is a great thing. I will drink it for the rest of my life.

You appeared on that one MTV show… Everyone wants to know, did you hit that!?! (maybe not everyone but I am curious)
haha it seems too have scored abit of attention…..its all good, i think its funny that i ended up in that position. Audrina is a kick arse sexy chick and we are close hahaha. i’ll leave it at that 😉

What do you think you would be doing if you never picked up a bike or surf board?
I would be working construction and trying to make a good go at life here in australia.

Who or what are some of the biggest influences in your life?
My family. They work so hard for what they have got and they love each other dearly. I want a fmaily just liek that when im older.

You have some pretty awesome photoshop skills did you teach yourself?
Actually a friend of mine Heidi first showed me the ropes and now im well on my way…..when you have a lot of spare time and its raining i guess i think photoshop lol.

If you could be sponsored by a company that has no ties to BMX, what would it be and why?
I think it would be an airline company. Travel is so rad. You can go anywhere and i’d sit my arse in first class all the way ahha.

If you could spend the day with anybody alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I think i would spend it with someone funny. Probly that chubby fella thats big in all the comedies these days…from super bad? that guy…..
Jonah Hill
